Hi All,

As much as I've learned from lurking in this forum for the past month or so, I have a picture that I can't seem to get right (not that I didn't spend a lot of time trying!) and am hoping that ya'll can help me out.

I got a pretty good shot of a friend's race car this weekend and would like to give him an 8x10 print for all the help that he's given me in the past (I also drag race Volkswagens).

If possible, I'd really appreciate it if some of you PS guru's could retouch the photo at the link below, give me a quick summary of how you did it, and email me a copy of the corrected image. I'm trying to get rid of the large, grey primer spot on the hood.

; (the file is 1.2 MB)

Thanks a bunch!

57HotrodVW,

Use Photoshop 7, select the grey area with the magic wand selection tool.

Adjust hue/saturation for roughly match the color of the hood. Then use the healing tool selecting near areas to finish. For finer retouching, use healing tool again as needed.

Regards.

Ops, I forgot to mention thath you shoud select the "colorize" option in the hue/saturation dialog.

Hi Eric,

I'm not claiming to be a PS guru (I didn't even use Photoshop, but the freeware software "The Gimp").

I tried to make a quick fix for your picture and added some retouching of my own taste. If you like it, I would like to spend some more time to do it more accurate.

See my try at: http://www.pbase.com/image/4682426

What I did was:

1. Increase the saturation of the image some.

2. Select the car with the lasso (or any other selection tool) and invert the selection to select the background.
3. Add motion blur to the selection.
4. Invert the selection to select the car.
5. Use some "Unsharp mask" on the car.
6. Use the "Clone" tool to remove the primer spot.

If I was going to print it, I would also try to remove some noise, e.g. by using NeatImage.

Regards,
Lars

Wow, this forum never ceases to amaze me. You've all got good ideas. Thanks to everyone for contributing to my ongoing education.

I've been experimenting with the Clone Stamp tool, but haven't been able to match things up as well as you all have. Can you give me some hints or more details on how you used the Clone tool to remove the primer spot?

I've posted the original photo at http://www.pbase.com/image/4683830/original since the retouched one was getting noisey.

Feel free to edit away...

Here's one that I messed around with some. It's not perfect.....seemed the more I tried to get perfection, the more I just made it worse! Involved cloning, healing and a lot of smudging. Anyways, if you want the full size version you can get it here:

While I had the image open, I tried buzzing it just to see what I could get.

...as it gives it a hand drawn or painted look. The more I look at it, the more I think that I like it better than the original (grin!).

Barry, would you mind buzzing the full size pic and sending me a copy or posting a link to the zip file? I'd also like to know how you did this.

More thanks,
-Eric

...can be found at http://www.ellisengineering.net/ellis.htm

After taking pictures for friends and family for some time, a few people suggested that I sell some of my photos, so I'm going to give it a shot. Hopefully, I can enjoy my racing and photography hobbies at the same time and make a little fun money to boot.

You can see some sample images of a few more wheelstanding VW's at my new website - http://www.speedshots.net

The Buzz plug-in looks really cool. Can you tell me what effects that you used to modify my picture?

Thanks,
-Eric
BTW, when do we get to see your Beetle?

Nice car Eric! What kind of times are you getting at the track? I've been going to the races at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY since I was a kid and always enjoyed watching though I haven't participated. I've had a couple of Chevelles and a Firebird but they were more for show instead of race (well....maybe a street race or two ;^).

Looks like you know the folks at the track well enough to get permission to get some great angles for you pics. You should have no problem finding customers for your photos, especially with your timing on the wheelstands!

What I did with your pic was duplicate the background layer and apply "Simplifier One" to it (can't remember the exact # of levels, over 1000). Then I duplicated that layer and applied "Edges-Mono" and set the blending mode to Overlay. You can play with the opacity to fine tune the effects.

Good luck with the new business!
