SupremeCamera.com???

If you make a purchase there and actually get a D700 for that price please post back here so that others can buy from there as well.

In other words- sounds way too good to be true.

A card reader and a cable (USB or Firewire) for it, depending on what it uses

A LensPen (about $8)

You might also want to consider replacing the strap with something else -- either a neoprene neck strap or a hand strap or a sling, but this is optional.

Also, just as a FYI, you're not going to often see an authorized Nikon USA dealer sell a camera for more than about $100-$150 below the going rate by other Nikon USA dealers. So if you see a $600 "saving", that should set off all yer alarm bells in your head including the one that says "WALK AWAY PRONTO".

A list of authorized Nikon USA dealers can be found here:

Buying from or through Amazon is generally safe. If you look closely, it will either say 'Sold by Amazon' (coming from Amazon themselves) or 'Sold by ' (coming from an Amazon partner, but not Amazon itself).

Amazon doesn't invite fraudulent dealers to participate in their affiliates program. So the dealers they use are generally reputable ones. But if you want to buy from the best online photo dealer in the world, that'd be B&H Photo and Video in Manhattan. Customer service is top notch.

Other major and reputable dealers would include Cameta, Adorama, J&R, just to name a few. I generally recommend buying from an actual camera store (whether online or in person) because their staff will be most familiar with cameras, the major manufacturers, dealing with after purchase issues, etc.

I order from Amazon all the time. However I have never ordered photo related equipment.

Here's the ones that I would have no reservations ordering from and I am sure there are more.

KEH
B & H
Calumet
Helix
Roberts
Adorama

I bought my D700 from Cameta through Amazon. First rate experience from both companies.

In NO WAY am I saying trust Supreme Camera (I know NOTHING about them) . . . I do find the ratings screwy at that page because KEH has a lower rating then Supreme Camera and we all know KEH is tust worthy. Or at least in all my years of buying from them I have had nothing but positive experiences as have the majority of others.

Doesn't look like they've been around for long. You might be taking a big chance with them.

This highlights the fact that people can skew the ratings in either direction they want. people from a scam company can come in and crank up the ratings and people who have bone to pick can slam a competitor or do it just because they want to.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Going to go with B&H. Do you recommend purchasing their extended warranty for the camera?
Well, in general, these are a profit generator for stores who sells such things. I don't usually buy such warranties unless it's circumstances where the cost of NOT having it would easily exceed the cost of buying it (amongst other reasons).

Warranties you buy from stores will often have a significant list of exclusion clauses. If you really want a warranty, I might suggest a reputable third party warranty to cover whatever forms of loss or damage you would like coverage for. Mack is a frequently mentioned third party camera warranty provider, though I don't have firsthand experience with them.

Bottom line is, buy B&H's warranty if you really must have one, but if not, consider appropriate coverage from someone else. Such as your homeowner's insurance company for an additional rider (or not even necessary at all) if it's a camera for personal use.

As a general rule, bookmark http://www.resellerratings.com/ . It's the first place to check when you come across a "good deal". The ratings are by satisfied and dissatisfied customers. As such, a merchant with very few ratings could tip the scales in his favor by adding some fake positive reviews, so check the total number of ratings and the time scale before accepting any great ratings.

My rule of thumb is that a rating above 9 is good, 8-9 is OK, below 8 find another merchant.

The rating site is good for much more than just camera gear. Use it for anything you plan to buy on the internet. If there are no ratings, chances are good that it's a fly-by-night operation that hasn't been around long enough to have anyone rate it.

I have nothing but praise for ordering from Amazon. But make sure it is from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller. If it says "Ships from ????" it 's not from Amazon. You will have to deal with some other company.
Thanks for the feedback. I think I'll ignore them. Has anyone ordered a camera from Amazon? Do you trust them?

Amazon is my favorite because of good prices and a generous return policy, full refund, 30 days, no question asked, no stupid shutter clicks limitation... It's all good. Some people claim to have had problems after abusing the return policy (they were buying multiple cameras with the intent to review them and then keeping only one...). My only issue with them is that the packing of the stuff is not always so great. But for electronics including cameras and lenses it's not such a big issue as the boxes are already very well padded by the manufacturer. However I've bought pans and metal bottles and they had dents.

The most common large discount bait and switch on Nikon cameras is a non-USA warranty. When they mention this on the phone they hope that you will upgrade to USA warranty at a different price. Just call them up, find out where they are located, (Brooklyn ?), and ask why the camera is so much less than the competition. They may just tell you.

I did not even bother reading this thread. Just the name tells the story. The only good these places are for is to click on their sponsored ads in Google without buying anything. That way you cost the b*stards money and inflict a bit of pain back for all the pain they inflict on unsuspecting suckers.
