Sony a500 or Nikon D90

These are 2 different cameras... IMO both are great cameras but

Sony A500 it's a straight forward camera. It's for those who really don't want to mess around with configurations and tweekings and want good pictures out of the box. They don't care much about technical stuff ...

D90 it's more a "photographers" camera... it's very customizable ... and great quality ... Great Sensor ( but from what i saw, i think the A500 it's as good or better ).

Now other things you really need to consider is ... the future... what do you want to do in the future...

This because, normally i choose the lens and them the body ... If you want to buy a 800 buck lens i think you should analyse if the probability of sticking to the brand is high.

I mean, on the other day i was checking the Olympus Zuiko 12-60 ... beautiful lens, but pricey... If i bought it, i know that probably, my next body would be a Olympus ... just to make sure the lens investment had a meaning.

So... It's about what you want to do and how you want to use the camera. :)

looking to advance my photography and i'm down to these two, any suggestions would be appreciated.
I went through the same decision, only I was looking at the A550. I've been shooting an A100 since the model came out. It was a satisfactory camera, as far as it went, but I felt I had reached the limits of what I could do with the model. So, considering that it was time to upgrade, I settled on either an A550 (which I could afford and would work with my existing glass and flash) or the D90 (which is what I really wanted, but I'd be pretty much starting over from a gear standpoint). Then I spent 20 minutes shooting with a friend's D90, and that pretty much settled it. I've had my D90 a week now, and I'm not sorry.

I recommend you use both cameras for a little while and see what you like. That will tell you more than any message board or article could ever do.

And if you settle on the Sony, contact me directly. I'm looking to sell some glass and a high-power flash.

I tried the a500 and the D90. And I am leaning towards the D90. I will be taking lots of basketball, soccer and softball pictures of my children. Also lots of family pictures.

In which points are you prefering the D90?

It would be useful for users to know your feedback :)

And did you try the A-550 ? Or you only tried the D90?
Yes, I did try the A550. The best I could say was "meh". It worked. It would have been an acceptable alternative, but it just didn't FEEL as nice. This isn't to say that the A550 is a bad camera; far from it. I didn't connect with the camera in the same way. I just didn't feel enthused in the same way as I did with the D90.

I realize that this is an entirely subjective assessment, which is why I suggest you should go handle both cameras and come to your own conclusion.

I like the way it feels, it's build quality and I also like the legacy more. Nikon is a camera company and Sony is electronics.

The A700 would be a better choice. I had the A350 and A700 and sold them to move to Nikon. I got the D90 and D300s and like them more than the A700, but the A700 is still a very nice camera. It was more of a heart felt personal choice for me since I missed my Nikon film gear.

ISO performance is better in the D90. The motorized lenses for Nikon are cheaper. Third party motorized lenses are not yet available for SONY (at least, last time I checked).

The A500 is a good camera but compared to the D90 and the Nikon system, there are areas where the SONY falls short and are still climbing.

We still don't know that until there are more reviews / samples from A500 (and 14 MP version A550). D90 has the same older Sony sensor as in A700. A500 and A550 have newer sensors.
