D700 Focus Issues

Tried this with no help. I think I am going to see if they will allow me to return it. It has been under 30 days and I'd rather not mess with all of these adjustments or having to send it to Nikon. It should be focusing better than this out of the box.....I realize there are more expensive cameras out there but again, I dropped a good amount of money on this body and I expect better....

I'll try that----I'll have to look in the manual to figure this out. Probably won't be able to do it until tomorrow.
I do appreciate all of the advice!
Michelle

Now THAT'S what I expected (and what I got when I rented) this body!! I'm more & more convinced it's an issue with the body. Thanks again!!

Have you found out the stores return policy, two weeks or thirty day's? You should let the forum know if they are doing right by you. Otherwise name the store and that will get their attention. Hope it works out for you.

I had not read this before, and it's highly discouraging.
Don't be discouraged, Michelle, because it just isn't true. The 80-200/2.8 is highly regarded on dslrs, including the d700. In fact, many favor it over the 70-200/2.8vr on the d700.

Absolutely. All 3 lenses can't be faulty -- return the camera.

D700 w/ 70-200 @ 95mm, f/3.2, 1/80, ISO 800. Focus point on eye.

I will be going in Monday...will be sure to post an update.

I can't thank everyone enough for all of the help & advice!!

I wanted to stop in & thank everyone for their advice. I literally lost sleep over this the last couple of days but decided to return the camera. Luckily the store gave me a full refund (albeit unhappily...) & I just ordered a new body from Amazon. I opted for overnight shipping & will have it in hand tomorrow!

Thanks again for all of your time & help!
Michelle

I'm happy to see you found the support here to make the return, Michelle. It was definitely the right thing to do. And I'm even happier that you haven't given up on the d700. Please let us know how the replacement model works out.

I'm sure that the new d700 will work just fine.

Let us all knowhow the new one focuses.

Just a little heads-up. Some D700's when turned on the first time don't focus well at all that owners get scared. Just flip from the single focus (s) to continuous focus (c) on the focus select switch. That usually fixes the issue quickly.

& I just ordered a new body from Amazon.
Devil's advocate: What are you going to do when your new D700 has the same "issue"?

The lens fine tune adjustment is there for a reason. As long as you can calibrate your lenses to your body there is nothing wrong with either...

She has 3 lenses that misfocus. She rented a D700 body prior to her purchase and didn't have a focusing issue with that body.

If all my lenses needed to have AF fine adjustment then I think I would either have that body calibrated by Nikon or sell it. I have 11 Nikon lenses and 4 Tamron lenses and only 4 lenses need a small adjustment less than 5 to make them work as close to perfect focus as possible on my D700 and D300. I also own a D80 and D70s which I personally made the internal body adjustment to get rid f the front focusing problem with all my lenses on those 2 bodies. Nikon doesn't have perfect outgoing calibration on the bodies. 3 family members have D700's, they don't focus the same and most of all don't expose the same. That's why you will read here on DPR that some complain about the D700 exposure being slightly overexposed, underexposed, or just right. Just normal production variation.

Why so arrogant with this member. Take time to read the posts and you might just find out your not a genious with the fix.

MichelleJ, you will invariably run across a member who would like to make you feel stupid. In the end they make jerks of themselves. Keep asking questions and show your work. That camera was an anomoly, it happens. Happy to hear it worked out for you.

Thanks so much & I didn't take any offense to the previous comment. I know that it might seem as if I had a knee jerk "blame the camera" reaction, but I did finally get the store owners to admit that something was off (after sending them more examples, including images they took themselves with 100% crops of the area in focus). They still wanted me to calibrate the lenses to the camera, but again, 3 lenses with the same issue points to the body itself missing focus.

I know not all will agree with the decision & that's OK! It was the right decision for me. I truly look forward to becoming more involved with this board---it has been a great experience so far!

I had a similar "learning curve" with my D200---I found that it my images always seemed just slightly underexposed. I learned that I just needed to adjust my settings in camera so the meter showed 1/3 stop overexposed but when I brought them into CS4 they were fine. After a while it became second nature to meter with that in mind!

I understand.
But there is no guarantee that the new body will fix "the issue".
If it too needs some fine tuning. Then what?

For reference, I have a D300 that was pretty much spot on with a few lenses (or close enough that it never was an issue that I noticed)
I got a D700 from amazon.com and most of these lenses needed +10 adjustment.

Speaking of amazon, I ordered on a Thursday, paid for 2 days delivery, got a notice that they updated me for free to overnight delivery, and got the camera on Friday...

Why do you think I was being arrogant? That is definitely not what I was aiming for.

Just speaking from experience, my D700 (which ironically comes from amazon) needed a +10 fine tune on most of my lenses.

She'll be fine....

And I'm sure that se will let us all know how well the new camera focuses...

Nothing wrong with AF fine adjust but it seems that since all your lenses need a +10, your body most likely is off by +10. You may someday run out of the + - 20 range with another lens. Zeroing in the body gains you +10 more if Nikon recalibrates it for you now.
