i am wondering if anyone has tried the above combination? I assume it does all the trinkets and AF.

I am trying to justify by buying the above kit lens to keep the GF1 small while on a walkabout outdoor shoot.

can people please attach pictures with the above lens attached.

Greatly appreciated,

The M Zuiko works just fine on the GF1, but AF is loud and slow, not good for videos. Plus it has no OIS. With both lenses at 14mm, the Oly is actually longer than the Panny 14-45mm, but the Panny extends as you zoom, whereas the Oly is about the same size on either end of the zoom range.

I use the M. ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm with the GF-1 for exactly the reason you stated: To keep the size down. I've had zero problems with this combo.

Of course, it doesn't have lens IS like the Panny 14-45mm, so that's something to consider if you find yourself in very low-light situations.

What's the focus speed like? Presumably better than when fitted to an E-P1 but not as good as the Lumix kit lens fitted to the GF1?

I ask because I'm contemplating swapping out the bodies but being a cheapskate and keeping the lens!

I don't have any of the Panny lenses, so i can't comment on that. I'd say that the Oly 14-24mm on the GF-1 is just slightly faster than it is on the E-P1. It still seems to throw itself out of focus and then re-focus on the GF-1 just like it does on the E-P1.

Advantages of Panasonic 14-45mm

Sharper
Lateral chromatic aberration corrected in software
Distortion fully corrected in software (Oly 14-42 only partially corrected)
Significantly faster AF
Optical IS
More common 52mm filter thread
Designed to take a hood

Advantages of Olympus 14-42mm

Much better macro performance
More portable when collapsed (but larger when extended ready to shoot)

Are lenses that are corrected by software in body able to be switched out like that?

For example, I have an E-P1. If I used the Panasonic 14-45 on it, would there be more distortion than there would normally be on a GF1?

Below it says that lateral chromatic aberration and distortion is corrected in software. I assume that it wouldn't be corrected in the E-P1.

If the above is true, then I wonder if there will be software correction deficiencies between Oly 14-42 and GF1.

I am not claiming the above to be true, it just seems that way after reading this.

Thank you all!! that was all very helpful.

I am going to following my heart instead of the brain on this one. I am going to get the cheap slightly cheaper Oly (about GBP135 on ebay atm) for a run about lens. During low light i would use the panny pancake.

those 2 above will be my starting lens, and i am going to save up for the lecia marco and telephoto.

I do have some nikon prime lens so i might get the adapter to play around.

Hi,

Am I right that M.Zuiko 14-42mm and Lumix G 14-45mm on fifth picture are collapsed as much as possible and with caps on both ends ready for transport? If so, the difference looks much bigger than those 16mm that you get when you subtract lengths from specifications.

I can't add much of substance, really, other than that I'm considering (and will probably go with) the same combination. After having a play at a local store, the GF-1 + Oly zoom is still (more or less) pocketable in my denim jacket; the GF-1 + Panny fits, but only just and I'd not be happy schlepping it about to the rock shows and afterparties and such where I tend to use the camera most.
