Canon Powershot G3

Barramundi, I agree with you almost at 100%.
(also, the 4x zoom deserves a mention - more optical zoom is always nice)

Canon may have taken the smart step with G3 and maybe story hasn´t ended... who says Canon won´t have a 5Mp Pro90 sucessor to announce ? they would make the perfect match to win on two battle fields: 4Mp and 5Mp segments of prosumer cameras!!!

G3 will be a decent upgrade for G1 users. For me it shall not be a choice since I have just put some money on add-on lenses for G2 and it seems that G3 will have a bajonet mount - I guess there will be no adapters but I don´t know... maybe LA-DC58 will still screw into G3 body ???
Dynamic Range are one of the things that I've been waiting for to
justify upgrade.
This G3 will hava a new converter A/D 12 bits, maybe this improve
that.
That would be an huge improvement - The 12bit A/D promises improvements here...
I will rather has lower 4MP as oppose to 5MP pixel count if that is
going to diminish noise levels.
EXACTLY ! I would like a clean Iso 100-200, a low noise 400 and a usable 800
Certainly the better ISO sensitivity is another welcome addition.
Only I hope the camera have a live recording histogram and 2sec
shutter delay.
Live rec histogram would be cool but I wouldn´t cry for it...
What do you mean by "2sec shutter delay" ? more delay than G2 ?
If the tripod mount is align with the focal plane then this will be
my next camera.
That would be ok too...
About the design, I think is great retro-classy looking.
To be honest, I like it - people should give some time and judge later - beauty is a mind process that takes some time to settle.

Open these links in 2 different windows and compare. The G2 already resolves as much detail as the Nikon 5700. The nikon has some features that make it highly desirable camera. However, the G2 does as good a job as the Nikon at recording sharp, highly detailed images. If the G3 image is only as good as the G2, then JAJ's comment would be correct.

If this would be true, there is none camera with more zoom from canon :S.

I don't know about you, but i would need a little bit more zoom to upgrade.

I know that passing from a a20 to a possible g3 would be a substantial upgrade, but one of the biggest limitations that i have on my a20 is the zoom.

Would there be some sort of lens at least 2X to put on a g3 or the price of this would be too high??

Thanks

1. 5MP - face it; with so many other 5MP cameras out no in direct
competition.
If it increased the noise and didn't deliver any extra resolution,
5MP would be worse because of useless extra file size, just like
interpolation. (Not that the average buyer could be persuaded
about that....)
2. 5x Zoom - 3x wasn't cutting it for many of my applications and
4x isn't enough of an increase.
Wouldn't a 5x zoom require some image stabilization and probably
and electronic viewfinder? Wouldn't that drive the price up another
big notch?
3. AF - THE BIG QUESTION !!!!!!!!!!!!
Is the AF improved? It won't be the best AF on a prosumer camera
(the F707/F717 will hold that title FOREVER) but it can and SHOULD
be improved over the currently poor one.
It would have been nice to see infrared night AF assist like
the F707, I'll grant that. Unfortunately almost no other
manufacturer has followed Sony's lead there.

I'm hoping that multi-point AF means that the camera will
focus more like the Elan/Rebel cameras, with viewfinder
feedback about what is being focused.
4. Other features? We will have to wait and see but it's not
looking great for Canon likers.
Who cares about features? Only benefits matter. Not everyone
understands this, however, and thus Canon shareholders may
have more to worry about than Canon fans.

I like the way it looks. Reminds me of a Leica rangefinder. Nice, classic lines. I'm a little fed up with the "spacey, round, fisher price" styling cues that have come to dominate consumer electronics.

Form should follow function. The grip is nice and pronounced, a nod towards ergonomic functionality. As for the rest of it, it looks great.

About the only thing that disappoints me is the fact that I can see a viewfinder window, and I was really hoping to see an EVF with the new Canon.

In my opinion, you make the camera better, and make it do what it does better. I couldn't care less about pixel counts if the end image is better quality. I've yet to see anything in the consumer range that really outcompetes the 4mp G2 sensor, especially the current crop of noisy 5mp sensors.

I have to reserve judgement until I see actual images, but I am optimistic that the IMPORTANT things have been taken care of instead of adding another "bullet point" to the marketting brochure.

Also... I don't know how much stock to put in this picture... or
the specs. You'd think CNET or a major Digital Photography mag
would preview the camera first.
Actually, I would only expect a pre-announcement leak to come from a retailer like this.

I'm sure many of the "reviewers" already possess it. I'd be shocked if Phil here at DPReview didn't already have some technical specs or didn't already have the actual camera.

He is, of course, probably bound by an NDA. I'm pretty sure we'll see a "preview" on announce day, as has been true for a lot of other cameras that have been announced.

I´d love to see a 5MP Pro90IS successor, this would interest me
much more than this G3...
I think I'd settle for a 4meg one if it has all the later software features such as histograms and freely settable AF...

The G2 looked like a chunky point-n-shoot camera. The new G3 looks like a classy rangefinder camera a la Leica. It wouldn't look out of place in the hands of Henri Cartier-Bresson. The grip looks serious. The design is no nonsense, timeless, classic. Very Leica-esque. It's an obvious nod to the renewed popularity of rangefinders like the Voightlanders, Leicas and Konica Hexars.
Actually, the features revealed and the new look are pretty cool
with me. If the G3 has improved focus, I may buy one again to go
with my D30.

The bayonet sounds great, almost like interchangable lenses.

Free focus? Could this be a focus point that is joystick controled
to place anywhere in a frame? Sounds like it.

What's that button on the top of the grip for, I wonder?

Slave support? I'm betting that may be the ability to fire a 550EX
or a 420EX in slave mode off camera... if so, that's WAY COOL.

Sounds like other flash improvements like second curtain sync, but
the translation appears rough.

All in all, some interesting features, and I'll bet we hear more.
This camera is more than a pretty (or ugly) face, guys. And I
still say that Canon staying with the 4MP sensor is a GOOD thing.

So, the specs match up to the ones reported in that magazine "Le Chasseur" that was mentioned here awhile back (4Mp with 4x zoom). One thing I would really like to see is a very good EVF. For outside work I am not crazy about the LCD. looking through the Vf is much more clear.
Bayonet lens mounting? My first reaction was they were trying to
corner the attached lens market. But I guess Lensmate and Tiffen
could come up with a bayonet to 49mm or 43mm if they wanted to.
With the bayonet lense mount, I think the G3 will still need a special adapter?
What would be the real reason Canon switched to this mounting? Are
screw threads really unreliable?
You wouldn't be asking that if you had to switch between tele and W/A on the go ;) I think it will make changing lenses quicker and more efficient. With a bayonet mounting system, filters like the UV and CP will have to be added to the end of the lense I think.
The 4 Mpixel is ok with me. The 4X optical zoom plus the Canon 1.5X
lens is still only 6X, which I get with my G2 and Tiffen 2X.
However, if this new combo will zoom from wide angle to full zoom
with no vignetting, that would be very cool!
There is the potential for some focus improvements - that's good.
If so, I hope Canon can adapt it for a G1/G2 firmware upgrade.
The appearance - I agree with a lot of the others - it's UGLY!
I can live with the new style. At first glance it looked like a larger Sxxx series but with the hand grip.
But,
some of you (older?) guys might remember the Argus C-3. They
nicknamed it "the Brick" because that's what it looked like. In a
way, this new G3 looks like a brick too. See image below:

Hey,

I currently own a Canon G1 and I was searching for some good deals
on a G2 in germany. By coincidence found some info (and pic) of
the G3.

....bark?

With so many rumours going around, it's normal to dismiss them until it's proven (it isn't really proven until it's officially announced but this has the appearance of being legit) to be true.

Dietmar,

I give you credit for your admission, but where's Gus? It's very
strange now that Snowdog's spec look to be true that he's not to be
found. OK, maybe Snowdog just happen to get lucky and "make-up"
the exact specs...then again maybe he had some inside info that a
NDA prevented him from spilling more, like source, photos, etc.
But, what's up Gus? Coming up with another top ten list?
