Canon 1ds Mark IV will be 32mp, it's a math thing...

Two or three years, either way it is way to far ahead for there to be any reliable rumors about next 1D product before the most recently announced one has arrived in the stores. And it has been 2 1/2 to 3 years with each of the last few high end (1D and 1Ds) updates: 1D MkII -> MkIII -> MkIV, 1DsMkII -> MkIII

Face it, the "merged 1D/1Ds line" idea has been around as speculation for a long time, and all that has happened lately is that, as soon as the 1DMkIV contradicted the "unified mark IV" version of the story, the "IV" has simply been changed to a "V". These sort of "rumors" are irrefutable.

Smaller lenses, better in low light, more telephoto reach: choose any two.

And relatively soon after it was "mentioned" by somebody at Canon, Canon stated that they had been misinterpreted. At least that's the way I remember it.

I don't think I'll jump on a 1Ds Mark IV with 32mp. I rather wait for 5D Mark III with 32mp which hopefully will have the 7D AF system at less than half the cost.

I'd also use sRaw at 16mp to reduce the file sizes as I certainly don't need 32mp. What I'm really hoping for is the ISO performance of the 1D Mark IV in the next 5D.

At some point, I think the IQ will degrade with smaller pixels. This is why I believe the 1Ds Mark IV will have 26.5mp based on the same pixel pitch as the 40D and 1D Mark IV. Canon will then concentrate on maximizing IQ, ISO, fps and AF functionality possibly utilizing two new Digic V processors (not to mention video), all for around $7.5k. If the Digic V is fast enough, perhaps it will do 16-bit, but I'm not sure the improvement in shades will compensate for the increase in file size.

Agree.

How many of us will print wall size picture? me personally haven't print any picture for a long time, all in digital format. Viewing from monitor/TV those super high pixel count only bring psychological satisfication IMHO.

I wish 1Ds Mark 4 will have stellar ISO performance, full video functionality -- live zoom/focus/exposure adjustments, super accurate, fast, and intelligent focus. Around 20MP is more than I will ever need.

If the up coming 1D4 had FF with the same 16MP, better ISO performance than D3s, better focus, I'd guy it in a heart beat.

I can't believe people are still posting anything about merging the 1.3x with full frame. As you said, that rumor was based on a misinterpretation from an interview that was refuted shortly afterward. Once someone originally posted this bogus rumor, others posted it again and again as though it was the truth, when in reality it appears very strongly that it was a misinterpretation.

Chuck Westfall was asked about this and said it was a misunderstanding, and he elaborated on it and posted links to the original interview where the misinterpretation occurred. You can read about it in his article in the digital journalist, along with links to the original interview where the question was asked, and also to another interview of a higher ranking Canon official where the same question was asked about merging the two sensor sizes. It was stated very clearly that there are separate sensor sizes to appeal to different markets and different types of photography. Here's the link to Chuck's article:

I need high resolution for architecture, landscapes and glamour shots... Currently shooting with 1Ds2 and 1Ds3, however nice they are, I cant afford a 39MP MF hassy system, so I am really looking forward for a 32MP 1Ds4, I constantly print at 36" x 36".

I agree, for people who never print larger than A3 or A2...21MP is already overkill. If Canon can stuff 18MP on an APS-C chip, I dont see why a 32MP FF sensor on the forthcoming 1Ds4 is an overdose.

For all those who really needs resolution, hard drive space, system speed and rams are all non issues.

Canon can also stuff 14 MP on a compact camera sensor, but that is not the whole story. The whole story is megapixels versus image quality, and at a certain point the latter starts to suffer. If you compare 3200 ISO results of the 7D versus the 5DII or the 1DsIII, you will notice that the 7D clearly loses that battle. Yes, it has amazing image quality for an APS-C sensor camera, but the 5DII and 1DsIII still show more detail. That is not (only) because of the 3 MP resolution difference, but (mainly) because the 5DII and 1DsIII need less noise reduction.
