Canon 1ds Mark IV will be 32mp, it's a math thing...

1ds Mark III = 21mp 5fps = 21x5 = 105

1d Mark III = 10mp 10fps = 10x10 = 100

1d Mark IV = 16mp 10fps = 160

1ds Mark IV = 160 / 5 fps = 32mp

similar chip technology and processing used in concurrent 1d models.

simple math = 32mp for the next camera, full frame....

the 1D4 is 16 MP and 1.3 crop so for a FF sensor with the same pixel size as the 1D4 (& same noise performance) we have 16MP x 1.3 x 1.3 = 27.04MP.

If Canon decide to adopt say the pixel size in the 7D (18MP) then we get 18 x 1.6 x 1.6 = 46.08MP. Or they may decide anywhere in between.

You're correct in working out a bandwidth ratio... however, you're assuming the 1Ds IV will be 5fps. Trend shows it to likely be a 6fps camera. so using that, you divide 160 by 6 you get about 26-27 with a little extra... Which fits in snuggly.

... then we have to buy a lot of harddrives ... to hold all the pics and movies !

The file size was 7000 something x 4700 something pixels as I recall.... whatever mp that is who cares ????.....

I'd say it's possible and very likely that you are correct.

However, and I'll say this with a grain of salt, if you look at the lasting power of the 1Ds series bodies, usually about 2-3 years in terms of performance/image quality versus the rest of the market - they could in fact go larger.

There are currently 3 other Canon cmos chip designs that produce more that 30 megapixels that are currently not in consumer cameras. If Canon wants to show it's mustard they very may well hit somewhere in 45-50 megapixels on the next body.

However, there's the rub of the actual resolution of the glass and what not. Not to mention the usability of images of those size for a larger consumer base.

Also, do not count out a completely new sensor technology being utilized on the next 1Ds. I'd almost bet my cow and my pig that the next 1Ds will be a 16bit camera.

I anticipate that there will be full HD recording just as there is now, but likely an advancement in image readout to reduce that nasty jello and also I wouldn't be surprised if it hit 90fps at full 1080p. Maybe even higher.

But we're a year away from this really happening in any case. And this is all crystal ball mumbo jumbo. We've hit that level of variance where once again something new will need to differentiate itself from the market a bit more than "normal".

Whatever happens, that next camera will be good. Very good.

I made a guess 9 days ago about the 1D4 and the 1Ds4...

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=33319390

looks like I am wrong on some things...and right on some...

let's wait for the 1Ds4 specs...

let's see what kind of "jump" it is compared to the 1Ds3...

Cheers!

PS Please look at Paul Pope's reply...

A week or so ago canonrumors.com had a rumor the 1Ds4 will be 32MP and available in the spring.

VERY simple math indeed. How about this math?

1Ds Mk II = 4 fps
1Ds Mk III = 5 fps
1Ds Mk IV = 6 fps?

In other words: nobody knows (and those who do know won't tell).

yes
can I have a FUNCTIONAL focus point more than 10% off center?

please

center is VERY accurate
others not so sensitive or accurate

in my experince

I'll pay an extra $500 if they put it in a small body
WITH FLASH
with all the features of big body

I'll take the higher MP than higher FPS any day.

canonrumors.com has heard that the next 1-series updates will merge into 1 camera leaving a place for the 3D. But I think the 3D arrives next fall at $3500.

canonrumors.com has heard that the next 1-series updates will merge into 1 camera ...
But the 1DMkIV refutes that merger idea, for about the three year 1D/1Ds update cycle, and if canonrumors means the successor of the 1DMkIV, who would believe a rumor now about that distant future?

What are you talking about? A 3 year cycle? That is just what Canon did last time. The 1D3 and 1Ds3 came out 3 years after the Mark II's, but the 1Ds2 came out 2 years after the 1Ds and the 1D2 came out 2.5 years after the 1D. So there is no 3 year rule for Canon.

The 5D2 came out 3 years after the 5D, but that is likely because during tha time Canon had no affordable FF camera competition and only FF competition of any kind for its last year of the 3.
