I am a wedding/social event photographer using 4-5 cameras (the clocks are in sync) between 2 photographers at an event. We shoot RAW plus JPEG Large. I try to place the JPEG images on line a day or two after the event. I process in CS3 and Bridge. Up until a month ago, clients were happy to see the images on line so quickly, although they were not in the sequence of the party. Now, and understandably, they would rather view the images in the sequence of the event. The JPEG images open in Bridge in chronological order which is exactly what I want-however when I Copy/Paste or Move the images to a new folder, they move in File nuumber sequence which is not what I want. I want to move exactly what I see in Bridge-the chronological sequence. I do not want to change the file name of the JPEG's-they must match the file name of the RAW images. I'm sure I'm overlooking something simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I know the problem. What I did was use Irfanview (freeware) to rename the files to XX-date-time-original_name .jpg

This violates your wish to keep the filenames equal to the RAW files, I know. However, you are able to trace back the originals because the original name is still there. And yes, the filenames become LARGE, but the current operating systems can deal with that. In the Irfanview help info you will find the codes to get date and time in the filename.
The advantages:
  • files appear in right order in maps and in every program
  • filename reflects date and time, which can be convenient

You need Photo Mechanic. This will allow you to sort both RAW + JPEG using capture time at the same time, then you can do a file remane on both.

That's what I was going to say!

I too use multiple cameras at events. The OP can solve their problem by renaming both the jpeg and associated raw file, and Photo Mechanic is a great tool for that (I have it set up to copy to two different disks, renaming as it goes). I personally name mine with the date and time (yyyy-mm-dd hh-mm-ss event name.jpg), so that I can sort them by name, and they will also come out in chronological order.

Cheers!

Chas

while I don't rename in bridge.... I use FastStone on site for renaming....if they are in the correct order in bridge wouldn't a rename of the raw files sort them in that order?

First.... I erase NOTHING until renaming has taken place...if you shoot raw and jpg in camera...and you place all the JPG in one folder, and all the RAW in another....a rename of each folder's contents will sort and keep them in the same order...and assign the same file names to each version of the image no matter if it started out as RAW or JPG...then delete the losers in both folders before archiving or posting....and your RAW files should have the same names (less extensions) in both folders...is this what you are wanting?

If you are on Windows platform....try FastStone for sorting and renaming it will work...then import them into LR or Bridge after renaming has taken place.....others have mentioned using other software for this initial renaming also....

Thanks folks for your help. I understand what you are saying. I didn't want to buy/learn another application. What I don't understand is why I can't Copy/Paste the chronological images that I see in Bridge into a new folder-it copies the original images in order by File name/number.

I know the feeling about not wanting additional software etc.. However...IF you are on WIN machine.... FastStone is FREE....and stable, and much faster for sorting and renaming than Bridge...and worth the time to download and learn to use it....

If on MAC, not sure what programs are similar sorry....

From your original post it sounds like the issue is that your website does not display the images in chronological order.

Many scripts and applications for Web-based photo galleries can display images sorted by the date/time taken. Sites like Smugmug certainly allow this type of sorting, and so do many of the photo gallery extensions for content management systems like Joomla and Drupal. Regardless of the type of scripting you use for your website, there should be a free or commercial Web-app that will display things the way you want.

Now DVD copies are another story. The person viewing the images can open them in the program of their choice and sort them any way they want.

The feature you are looking for is to sort by date taken rather than by a file name. If you are using Photoshop to make the web display, you'll never achieve this... Or at least I've never been able to.

A very easy to use (almost no learning needed) application which also provides you hosting space on a high speed backbone (if you want it) is Jalbum. You can also use 'skins' with it to set up a shopping cart and sell your images on-line.

I've been using it for several years to display my client images. Password protection of the album and on-line sales should appeal enough to someone like yourself that any learning curve (even this tiny one) would be worthwhile.

The sort by time created feature automatically puts everything in chronological order. The largest album I've made so far this way is 1200 images.

can this program do reverse order either by file name, or by date taken? I want to modify my albums online to show the latest shots first and the oldest shots last. What I have found is that I have buyers always quitting five pages or less into a folder....meaning they pick from only the oldest work.... I haven't been able to get LR or PS to create HTML or Flash albums with a reverse order sort.....

The sort order options are as follows:
Name
Date
CUSTOM
Sort order
Jalbum defaults
and I'd suspect, anything you want to sort it by.

It's free Richard, why not try it?

Hi Richard,

In Lightroom:
  • In Library module, go to the folder or collection that has your web images
  • From the menu select: View -> Sort -> Date Taken
  • From the menu select: View -> Sort -> Descending
  • Go to Web module
Good luck

Dave

Hi,

I think there are (at least) 2 issues:

1) The sort order displayed in a folder on your operating system (are you Windows or Mac? Which version?). I know that Windows folders can be set to sort by the images date taken field & I would imagine the same would be possible on a Mac.

2) The sort order within the software you use to create your web pages (what do you use?)

If you let us know some more details about your OS, software & workflow, I'm sure a good workaround could be found.

ought to read the instructions I guess....thanks for pointing this out....

I currently sort according to capture time 2009_10_28_095245(1) [Year_month_day_HourMinuteSecond(third of a second)].

If I add a second time synced camera via a second shooter [not me switching cameras] and 2 files have the same timestamp how do I add the files together.

That is without loosing one of the matching files withthe same time names??? or is it automaticly done? If so how?

while it is tedious.....first you have to sync the cameras on the date of the shoot to make certain they will sort properly. I place all the pics in one folder from each camera....rename them with a temp name starting with "A" next camera same with "B" etc. then combine all the photos ...and rename with new permanent names after sorting by time.
