It's official, Pentax has gone collectively insane.

That camera is based on that little robot. I think the robot is a popular character in Japan. Really, the camera is aimed at the Japanese market, people there love decorated electronics.

'Dinsdale?'

It's just a gimmick, It's not like it's the only colour they are going to offer. I have a limited edition Olympus that frankly could be described as chocolate brown if one were to be kind. If I were buying a camera to go with my K-7 it would be something bright like this as a conversation piece and to help talk to people.

You all know this is a joke right? you can see the black face and markings are clearly sharpied on. its not even a photo shop work. its just some guy that painted (most likely a white) K-X just like a model car/figurine or what ever.

I don't see how people are not able to tell felt tip pen marks.

blah.

I actually wasn't looking at the marker stuff but all the colours. I just thought it was a color sampler. Like someone at the factory thought hmmm I've got all these parts left over this looks like fun.

Its not a joke.
Just correcting myself here, it kind of is a joke, but it is not a fake and is indeed sold by Pentax. It is based on the "Kore Janai robot" which means "Not this! robot", "kore janai" is something youd expect a child to say on his birthday when getting a wooden robot with felt tip marker face/details, instead of the latest and greatest in robot technology.

So its really a kind of cruel joke from Pentax, you buy this and give it to someone who will be like "Noo! I wanted a K-x but you gave me this K-x! Kore janai!". That is the joke anyways, in reality it will likely be bought by people who want it for themselves for the cult-factor of the "kore janai robot".

A crying child having unfortunately received the robot can be seen on the makers homepage:

It's a very limited edition of 100 units. The face is hand-painted just like the original Korejanai robo-toys.

Not exactly what I would call "insane". They started the color concept with the Limited edition K-m, and the results of that experiment is obviously to implement it on a larger scale with the K-x.

Based on that, you can tell that this is another marketing experiment that could lead to other things.

I saw the picture before and thought it was a joke. Is this what Pentax has to do to get people's attention to its products? Seems like the writing is on the wall.

It's a 100 unit limited edition, made by a Japanese design group in likeness of a famous character of theirs. It's a bit of good press buzz for Pentax here.

For those of you whose manhoods are so very fragile that it's threatened by "their brand" having anything but he-man macho styles, do you also check the market so that "your" car, kitchen mixer, headphones, toilet bowl, desk fan, power tools, gps unit and computer isn't available in pink or other feminine tones, or in multiple colors?

The OP of that thread summed it up icely in his last post in that thread:
after reading through these posts and viewing the image over time, I now think it looks pretty neat :)
