This past week I visited Photoplus Expo in NYC and had a chance to shoot some frames with a new D3s. I also had an opportunity to get some video.

I have posted a page on my website with some of the images and the videos for download. Feel free to download them and play with them. So far I can only find Nikon ViewNX 1.5 and Capture NX 2.2 can open the RAW files. Full resolution JPGs and the original NEFs are available after the jump

Videos are quite large and the NEF and Full resolution JPGs are also large. RAW files are around 20MB and the JPGs are around 8MB.

Those 25,600 pictures are nothing short of a miracle - really for that matter so are the 102,400.

I didn't really expect any camera to reach this level for at least another 10 years.

Hi Manny (and all) :)

I've processed the NEFs using Raw Therapee, and uploaded the results at
http://www.mato34.es/temp/d3s/

When I'm not comparing images between cameras I like to finish them applying some sharpening and NR, however I think in this case that would be a critical decission given the ammount of noise present above 25600 ISO, so there isn't any sharpening nor NR here.

Thanks again for sharing your samples, NEFs, and videos. I'd really like a D700s using this sensor, I see a real improvement over my D700.

Saludos!

--Canon owners will no doubt be looking closely at these. Until more samples come out that are a vast improvement over their previous samples, they should worry. It looks like Nikon have got their 'upgrade' bang on the money.

I can't wait to get one of these. I'll have to wait till mid 2010 though! The idea of the iso and quiet mode floats my boat. Do you need any more tested Nikon?

Thanks for the time and effort much appreciated

Hi Manny,

hope you dont mind i ran a quick noise reduction { just auto setting no tweaking } on the 25600 photo and the results are pretty decent , i think with a wee custom noise reduction routine this iso could be usable. Here is the image i will take it down in the morning thanks again for posting them

How was the rolling shutter?

What about auto focus . . . how well did it work? Did the mic pick up lens noise?

What else can you tell us about the video . . . quality, ease of shooting it, etc?

(Downloading the file now to take a look but how you'll elaborate on the video aspects of this camera).

Thanks for posting it.

Jim, no sweat, that was my goal for folks to be able to play with the images from the new camera :-0 so go right ahead and play with them.

It is AMAZING given the high ISO setting how usable that image looks. Ha! My D2Xs while terrific at ISO 100 and SUPER sharp, it is ABYSMAL at ISO800 and above... this is truly AMAZING performance!

My problem is I am NOT letting go of my camera so I have to wait to get a D3 cam of any kind.

PJ,

I can say this much... moving the control dials is picked up quite well by the built in mic. In one of the clips you will hear me dialing in a larger aperture (you can see the effect while I do it) and it is clearly heard on the audio track.

The 400mm f/2.8 which was mounted for all the video clips, is NOT heard at all in the tracks... very quiet. But you can not play with the dials. I hope we can have a remote to do this from a quiet interface like an iPhone or an MC-36 like device.

Autofocus was extremely scary good I was picking out spots in a very very busy crowded area... at 400mm the compression was sizable to make any AF system squirm. The sensors are TINY and that allows for very precise single area focusing...

As far as group AF, I could not REALLY test it because I did not have my favorite subject to test against which would be a nice large blank sky with an F-15 rolling by at 600 knots

The shutter felt terrific. I like the new push-back on all the buttons... more rubbery, hard to explain. I have very heavy fingers so it works for me since i find my D2Xs buttons too easily pressed.

As for video, oh how I wish it was 1080p :-( But, I have to say I was SUPER impressed by the lovely rendition of muddy noise on video... ISO 102400 on video looks AWESOME... gritty and dirty for my taste... look great to me. I guess it has to do with the effect of motion but it is very acceptable.

I first was worried about the use of Motion JPEG but I have to say Nikon is smart. I love h.264 but using MJPEG means REALLY REALLY sharp video... it also helps in streaming it to disk quickly (make that CF) as I was really pushing stop on the record button and instantly the Extreme III would stop writing. I think they did a great job. The rolling shutter effect is MUCH improved. I did a few heavy pans left to right to left and you could see for yourself is NOT that bad... not perfect, but better than a D90 to my eyes.

Video is started by first going to Live View and then hitting the front DoF button or the ENTER button on the rear multi-way rocker button. Easily done. However, I think without a remote with smooth rollers, it is impossible to change settings like aperture or ISO mid-flight without upsetting the steadiness of the shot or the noise the dials make.

Cheers!
Manny

Thanks for the comments.

As far as noise from the camera being picked up by the mic, wonder if this would be solved by using an external mic, such as a Rode Video??

Am anxious to see/hear more about the video capabilities of this camera. I agree that it's too bad they didn't put in 1080 (and maybe 25p and 30p), as that seems to be a major complaint I'm hearing about it already.

Nikon for putting ANY sort of video on it... I mean, this is to be a TOP CALIBER pro STILL camera. Nothing they do to it will make it a replacement for a RED digital video camera or even less, a Sony or a Canon or Pani or JVC top of the line video camera. The issues with rolling shutter, I mean well, why go all out and throw in so much complexity they have to now support two cameras (still and video) and all that comes with it.

Still I say if you get great quality from a 7D in 1080p and happy with it, wh would anyone spend the extra bucks on a D3s?

Only compelling reason I see is for superior low light capability, sharpness, resolution in such a small and powerful package... I can see that.. and 35mm Lenses and DoF for free... so I say I am happy with ANY video and yes, you can use external mics :-)

They could be heavily invested in Nikon lenses and want to remain with Nikon, rather than having to switch to a 7D or 5DMII.

Have to agree with you there. As a stills camera, it has no equal; from a video standpoint, though, it appears to be eclipsed by Canon (although only time -- and more samples -- will tell if Nikon also hit a home run with its video capabilities.

One more question about the video, now that I've had a chance to download it and view it: Did you have the camera in AF mode when shooting? If so, it seems like the focus was hunting and rather slow. I realize the conditions you were shooting under weren't the best, but was quite dismayed by the focusing.

Comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
