PJ,
I can say this much... moving the control dials is picked up quite well by the built in mic. In one of the clips you will hear me dialing in a larger aperture (you can see the effect while I do it) and it is clearly heard on the audio track.
The 400mm f/2.8 which was mounted for all the video clips, is NOT heard at all in the tracks... very quiet. But you can not play with the dials. I hope we can have a remote to do this from a quiet interface like an iPhone or an MC-36 like device.
Autofocus was extremely scary good I was picking out spots in a very very busy crowded area... at 400mm the compression was sizable to make any AF system squirm. The sensors are TINY and that allows for very precise single area focusing...
As far as group AF, I could not REALLY test it because I did not have my favorite subject to test against which would be a nice large blank sky with an F-15 rolling by at 600 knots
The shutter felt terrific. I like the new push-back on all the buttons... more rubbery, hard to explain. I have very heavy fingers so it works for me since i find my D2Xs buttons too easily pressed.
As for video, oh how I wish it was 1080p :-( But, I have to say I was SUPER impressed by the lovely rendition of muddy noise on video... ISO 102400 on video looks AWESOME... gritty and dirty for my taste... look great to me. I guess it has to do with the effect of motion but it is very acceptable.
I first was worried about the use of Motion JPEG but I have to say Nikon is smart. I love h.264 but using MJPEG means REALLY REALLY sharp video... it also helps in streaming it to disk quickly (make that CF) as I was really pushing stop on the record button and instantly the Extreme III would stop writing. I think they did a great job. The rolling shutter effect is MUCH improved. I did a few heavy pans left to right to left and you could see for yourself is NOT that bad... not perfect, but better than a D90 to my eyes.
Video is started by first going to Live View and then hitting the front DoF button or the ENTER button on the rear multi-way rocker button. Easily done. However, I think without a remote with smooth rollers, it is impossible to change settings like aperture or ISO mid-flight without upsetting the steadiness of the shot or the noise the dials make.
Cheers!
Manny
How was the rolling shutter?
What about auto focus . . . how well did it work? Did the mic pick up lens noise?
What else can you tell us about the video . . . quality, ease of shooting it, etc?
(Downloading the file now to take a look but how you'll elaborate on the video aspects of this camera).
Thanks for posting it.
