U10 shots

Well, I'll see how I feel about it in the morning. Oh, come to think of it, it is morning here (but the camera store isn't open at 2 a.m., luckily). Cameras have generally been a bit cheaper here with the yen as weak as it is right now; however, I can see from what you and Ulysses have quoted that it's a bit higher to start with in this case, and just balances out with the discount and rate of exchange.

I need another camera like a hole in the head. Still...

Helen
Helen....I appreciate your immediate feedback to all of us...thank
you! There seems to be a crescendo effect building toward the
purchase of this little gem...it is going to complement my 'anytime
anywhere' needs perfectly..the price on http://www.sonystyle.com is 199.00
and when I ordered the shipping was .01 cents..there was also sales
tax for Indiana of 5% which totaled to 209.00, roughly! I
understand tax is taken in the States that Sony is registered for
business. No big deal!

Bottom line is fun....the future will bring more bells and whistles
but all we really have is 'now'. Go for it!

All the best!

I also took some indoor shots with my DSC-P5 and DSC-U10 that I just bought for 2 weeks ago. Both of these shots were took in 1280x960. Here are the images:

P5

U10

Can you find the difference of these shots? P5 took more detail and clear images than the U10 did. However, U10 is small enough for me to put it in my pocket. That's the only one reason for me to buy it.

Hi Helen,

I was looking for a really portable camera (which the U10 really fits the bill), but the greedy me wants 2MP - for printing 4R or even 8x10. It cost SING$399 retail (here in singapore), and surprisingly there ain't many shops selling this camera. I did ask one shop why.. they told me that it was only 1.3MP, and told me to look at the P2 which was better. (it cost about SING$699 retail for the P2)

The price the seller wanted was pretty close the retail price, so I'll hang on for the time being. I'm still considering the U10 as well as the P2.

I like the fact that the U10 uses AAA size batts instead of the infolithium. There's one thing which I didn't get around while testing the camera was the LCD brightness control on the U10. When I used it outdoors, it look pretty dim as compared to the Casio Exlim. Can this be corrected by some function in the U10?

Regards,
Ivan
Thanks for posting those. I really wanted to go outside and see how
it did, but my buddy who works at the store wasn't in so it just
wasn't worth the hassle to get them to let me take it out. (I even
had to buy a pack of batteries to use since the store's were pretty
low and they weren't inclined to give me some that would work!)

Why didn't you buy it?

Helen
Pretty Good pics.. considering that's only 1.3MP. If only they
would come out a 2MP version, it'll probably sell like hotcakes.

Here's some of mine which I shot from a used U10 camera I almost
bought. (nothing artistic about the pics too!)

Hi Ivan,

The LCD looked a bit bright to me indoors, so I tried to dim it a bit, but then it was pretty much dark, so I don't think there's much control. Wish I could have a look at the Exlim!

I'm torn between waiting for a 2 MP version and giving in and getting a new toy, which I don't really need. But the kinds of pics I would print from it could easily be 4x6 or 5x7. How do you think it would do with that size pic? (I've only ever had 3-4-5 MP cameras)

Hi Helen,

Coincidentally, I did print out one of my pics. It did quite well considering it's size. I had it print in 4x6 and as well as in A4 size. 4x6 is better..

Thank you again for bring up this camera in the forums, I had a hard time looking for info about 3 weeks back. Please do post more pics if you can.

It's really tempting... I might just get it....

p/s: has anyone had experience with the P2?

Hi Ivan,

Well, I gave in and bought it today! Got my 10 percent discount plus another $20 or so off from a point card I have with the store. I've posted more pics at:

http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/more_u2_test_shots

As I explained in the gallery, they are just of all kinds of things I could find to shoot -- pretty mundane, really. It's quite frustrating to not have a zoom, so of course I get all those things in the pic I would normally avoid by getting closer in. I didn't edit them in PSE except to straighten the most crooked few and resize. Haven't tried to print any yet but will when I have some time. (I'm supposed to be working but naturally have spent all afternoon on this instead!)

It's fun having a new toy -- you'll enjoy it if you get it, but remember it really is just a point and shoot and nothing more. But a cute little one!

Hahahahahahah!!

Helen, I told myself that before I could count to 10 (really slowly) that this little camera would be yours. Heheheh...

I'm looking forward to your practical everyday experience with it and hearing how you actually use it, how fast it is, does it capture as well as you expected it to do, and such stuff like that.

My wife might actually be interested in something like this. Shoot... I'd be interested in something like this.

Hi Helen,

Yes yes!!! do tell us if how fast it is.. very important to me as I would like to have a camera that can take children (action) or animal photos.

I've got to pre-focus for my 707 in order not to miss a shot.

Thanks and enjoy your new toy!

Hi Helen,

Thanks for taking more pics! I guess your pbase site has the most pics taken by a U10... hee!

Great picture of the white dog! The Vivid Nature mode does bring out sky and the roofs of the houses in the distant. Pretty good indoor pics, though there's some noise seen on the ceiling and walls (ISO > 160, 250).

The twilight portrait flash.jpg looks great! Those pics are really something.. it's hard to believe it was taken by such a small camera. More ppl should see this, and they might just dump their 707 for this U10..hee!

If only this little guy had a video output, it'll be great for immediate slide shows.

Thank you again.

Perhaps they will be releasing one pretty soon.. maybe at the major photo shows. This camera was released around June-July (most likely earlier in Japan). If it's 6 months, maybe around christmas then.

It'll be good to have a video out connector.. but it'll be too big for this camera. Sony should come out with something that could read memory sticks and easily hook up to the Video in & Audio (RCA jacks) of the TV. Or is there? I know there's a TV from Sony, but not everyone will have one.

Ivan

Do you have any doubt that they will?

Some reviewers seem to think it will happen:
"What's next? how about a 2-megapixel version (U20?) in 6 months,
and a 3-megapixel model (U30?) with zoom in a year? We wouldn't be
surprised."

Thanks for your pics. I'm on my way to look at the album now...
stand by...

What I've noticed from the four or five U10 galleries I've seen is
that in some situations the little camera will have a bit of
trouble with its WB and give a bluish cast. This is not in flash
mode. It's just having a bit of trouble sometimes with its best
guess. Of course, nothing that totally ruins the shot. And it's a
little guy, so you can almost be forgiving of it when most of the
shots come out decent.. :-)

Helen,

A few questions.. First, I've seen you on these forums for a long time and thanks very much for the U10 samples. Hopefully mine will arrive this week.

a) Does your husband work on the AIM-9 air to air missile or something? (I assume that's your husband in the photos)

b) Did you set the time on your U10? If so, then pbase is incorrectly reporting the date and time in the EXIF headers.

c) Can you post some full size unedited shots? What I looked at was all 800x600; did I miss one? Just one or two would be great!

d) What's the average file size you're seeing?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Ivan,

It focuses amazingly quickly. After working with an S75 and 85 as well as an F707, I can hardly believe it. I haven't tried to take any action shots yet, but will see if I can get my dog running around in the yard tomorrow. I was going to say I didn't know if the shutter speed would be fast enough for any action, but I see that some of my landscape shots in broad daylight on the street by the camera store were at 1/640, so should be able to catch something (at least my dog).

Helen

for getting it first! hhaha:)

nah, thanks a lot though, like i said earlier, your pics gave me security my purchase was not in vain... though i was curious as to the other cameras around that price range that the u10 competed against... only ones i thought gave it serious competition from 200 - 300 dollars is the exilim right?

LOL! You have me pegged pretty well, don't you? I needed to stay home and work today, but just couldn't resist the pull of yet another new Sony camera. I'll pay for it tomorrow (for not staying home, not the camera).

Yes, I'm looking forward to working with it and seeing how well it can do. I have to go to a luncheon tomorrow dressed up in kimono and I know I'll want to take pics, but with the U10's abilities still being unknown, don't know if I should risk it. Definitely can't bring the 707, but the U10 seems to perform better than my P7 in some situations. Hmmm.... do I dare? It would sure be the hit of the party :-))

Your wife will enjoy it, I'm sure. So will you.

:-PPP I love being the first on my block with a new toy!

That's the one I've heard about. I asked at the camera store, but they said that they have to order it if someone wants it. How do I know I want it if I can't even see and handle it, let alone try it out??

Yours is coming soon, I believe. Do you have different colors for them in the States? I had a choice of pink, blue or silver/white. I thought it already looked enough like a toy camera, so the white would give it some kind of respectability :-))

It's sort of funny; I've become something of a celebrity on Okinawa for my photos and Web pages, and so people expect me to pull out some professional-looking camera when I take shots. The 707 meets their expectations, but when I have the P7, they do a double take. Wait till they see the U10.

different colors my buttocks. they never release us anything nice... only black and silver come to the states. go figure... i'm still wondering why sony japan never releases the cutesy colors here... maybe some US politicians are paying them to ensure that a new generation of jpop cutesy girls don't sprout up over here. hehe. honestly i wanted blue... and the pink one... and the silver! haha. i can't make up my mind... well since it wasn't for me, it was easy to make up because my girlfriend only wanted silver (i didn't tell her i got it yet, it's a surprise). i asked her (nonchalantly) if she would ever want a cute digital camera and she got mad at me and said that she knew more about photography than i do and that digital isn't true art... blah blah blah... but i just shut up to save myself an argument... so i'm EVEN thinking about returning it!!! (i.e. refusing the item).

i dunno... i'm in a limbo now. by the way... i read in reviews its the same size as a credit card... but it seems to be more bigger... and the size of a nokia 8260/8290 rather... no?

Hi Steve,

Well, let's see if I can answer these before I head for bed:
Helen,

A few questions.. First, I've seen you on these forums for a long
time and thanks very much for the U10 samples. Hopefully mine will
arrive this week.
Amazingly enough, I joined about a year and a half ago when I bought my first Sony, an S75. Time sure does fly! I'll bet you can't wait now!
a) Does your husband work on the AIM-9 air to air missile or
something? (I assume that's your husband in the photos)
Yes, it's my husband in the photos but no, he is U.S. Consul General here in Okinawa -- sort of like being an ambassador, however it's not an embassy but rather a Consulate General. It's an extremely busy and pressurized post, and he works quite closely with the military (but not on missiles!) as well as with the Okinawan and Japanese governments.
b) Did you set the time on your U10? If so, then pbase is
incorrectly reporting the date and time in the EXIF headers.
Thanks for reminding me. I saw that a little while ago and meant to correct it. Those were shot with the store's camera, which I managed to get them let to me take outside for a while.
c) Can you post some full size unedited shots? What I looked at
was all 800x600; did I miss one? Just one or two would be great!
Sure I'll post some full-sized ones at the end of the album. Any in particular you want to see? If you answer soon, I'll do it before I go to bed (1:30 a.m. right now) I just upload 800x600 to pbase as I understand that's the optimal size for that site (as well as to save time).
d) What's the average file size you're seeing?
Files are running anywhere between 112 and 320 Kb, but average seems to be around 250.
Thanks,
Steve
Helen

You gotta be kidding! I couldn't get a black one here if I begged them for it! And mine isn't really silver, it's more like... pearl. Leave it to the Japanese. Here were my choices (and there is my camera, btw):

The P2 comes in a really pretty blue; I would have picked that if the U10 had been avaible in it.

The U10 is about 3" wide, 1.5" high and less than 1" deep. Same lenth as my credit card, but not as tall and about 20 times as thick. Pretty compact.

Well, hope you don't have to return yours; they really are fun!

Helen
