That's old news, but now be ready for the following questions:
Who told you so ?
Did they say when is replacement going to come ?
Any Zeiss primes coming ?When? what model ?
Will Sony come out with a D3s or 1DMKIV style camera by christmas ?
Why Sony entry level do not have MLU? AEL? DOF?
When will Sony come up with video ?
ETC...

This means one of two things:

1) The a700 manufacturing facilities in Japan have been converted to a900/a850 production only
or
2) the replacement for the a700 is currently being produced there.

Anyone care to guess which one?

that was posted a long time ago..
Every camera goes out of production before it is discontinued from the line..

However Sony may have guessed wrong at the numbers needed to fill sales until the replacement. The A700 at $850-$999 us appears to sell out as soon as anyone gets them in stock.

The A700 in almost all markets is still an active model in the product line, but we appear be seeing allocations being controlled. I think they are working to stretch the inventory.

Production has ended / as a model the A700 is not yeart discontinued as part of the line.

Since this was first on a Sony site in July there is a third option, they might be using the facility for the a5xx line.

a small dutch Photo chain who always had the entire Sony Line is not showing the A700 and A900 anymore.

they show two pages with Sony DSLR's in different combinations.

in some other stores i visit in my area u only find the entry level models whilst they had the A700 and A900 before.

in the past these stores had alway's had a few body's in stock.

Well, at least I have my a700. I'm probably being a stupid optimist thinking I should wait on getting a couple more for backup.

Everyone at Sony that I talked to said the a700 is out of production. Up unto this point we all surmised that this was so: correctly as it turns out. I couldn't find anyone who would comment on a replacement; either yea or nay on the a7xx.

I did see a working preproduction? 28-75 SAM.

If there is a replacement having the lens adjust of the a900 on it is almost a universal request. I've always included that, even though I've not had focus problems with my a700.

I tend to list having a fully developed intelligent preview as well. Either as a full up raw processor you can adjust and save the jpeg. Or more or less as it is, but rather than taking a new shot to save just save the shot you tweaked. With all that can be adjusted that's a fair bit too.

A750....soon...
A1000...next spring...
Since Canon will not exhibit at PMA, CES will serve as their venue to show some new A7XX. It will interesting to see if Sony decides to wait for PMA time frame, or just prior to CES.

If Sony does have an A1000 in the works, I think spring might be a little early since next year is a Photokina year. I would think that Sony would show it in late summer, a month or so before Photokina. I think Sony would show a replacement for the A900 next spring.

Some time ago, I learned that the "Japanese production style" is described as follows:

Your production line is installed once, the estimated total number of units is produced, all units are configured, tested, packaged and put in a warehouse, and then all units are sold out of the store.

Of course, units are also sold while produced.

Then the production line is disassembled to create space for the production line of a different product.

If the product has high demand (or if it is not possible to produce all units at once), additional batches are produced. The production line is installed again, the next batch is produced (and put into store) and then the line is disassembled again.

This means, that "out of production" does not mean that the product is outdated and a successor is to be expected soon. So just because the a700 is out of production does not mean that the successor is ready.

The risk for this production style is if the successor is delayed, because there is a gap between the moment where the current model is out of stock and the next model is not yet ready. Building an additional batch of the old model is expensive. The same is true if the successor is ready too early, since the stock of the current model becomes obsolete and must be sold at a lower price.

An indicator for the successor of the a700 is a combination of price drop (to empty stock) or shortage (delayed production or bad estimation of sold units) at a time when the successor is expected. Of course globally, not only in the US or local countries.

Reasons for local short stocks can be unavailability of local manuals and cables, or massive fluctuation of the currency exchange rate when the local order is placed.

The a700 is a bargain at the moment, and the successor is not far away. Enjoy Xmas!

Regards, Josef.

Is not very clear if the A700 is temporary out of production or permanently out of production? The production line might be used for A850/A900 cameras, but continued in a couple of months. However the A700 is two years old and it is very likely that a new model is in the pipe lines.
