I frequent other message boards of computers and what not and many of them often have a forum where they sell and/or trade things with each other. Does that not happen with photography message boards? I've only been to this one mainly.

I just wonder because in buying used equipment, I would rather buy from people here. Or do people just not buy used equipment anymore =)

To quote from the posting rules for this site - "For Sale - We don't allow for sale messages (at all)."

That's why you won't have seen much trading here. It does happen a bit...

I don't know if it will upset our host but I guess you can post a link to something you are selling on Ebay or such auction sites.

I think this will be okay based on something that the rules indicate about certain pictures: "If you wish to bring a gallery of such images to peoples attention then please just post a link."

Yeah, I understand that sales are not allowed on this site. I'm just curious as to why not. It would seem like a better place to purchase used equipment. Although I do see having a sales forum to cheapen the feel of this place a bit... not incredibly though. I can understand the owner wanting this to strictly be a place of sharing of technique and pictures. I personally don't have anything to sell. It's just that if I ever wanted something, I would know that the equipment sold here would be reliable and honest (most of the time =P )

This site probably gets the most hits. It's almost always #1 on the search engines.

DPRev makes dough on banners. Heck, even a motherboard company advertises here. If there is a trading/selling message board then all the commercial guys would spam like crazy because this place gets so many hits.
And where there's traffic there's also a great chance of cons.

It's not really in the spirit of the rules but I suppose it would be OK within the letter of them. Ask Phil :-)

...whereas on Ebay ... ?

BTW, extrapolating from the number of posts here about faults, breakages, syndromes, loose parts etc. I think I'd take my chances almost anywhere ;-)

Why risk the "royal boot"?

Posting even a link to an auction falls within the Posting Rules.

I got my last digi from someone on the forum that just mentioned they were moving up and would be selling their old stuff to get some of the cash. I e-mailed them to get the details. The lady was a frequent poster on the Olympus forum and I knew her relatively well.

That being said, now I'm looking for a nice used 707 or Oly E-10 so feel free to e-mail me.

Personally I wouldn't risk the regal footware, but I recognise that human nature being what it is, some users manage to casually drop into the conversation the information that they are thinking about possibly, one day, considering selling some gear...

I suppose it's just that I've had a bad experience with ebay being ripped off and stuff. I've had better experience on message boards. Those message boards generally had some sort of rating system so it wasn't a complete blind buy.

Good point with the broken equipment tho =p
