Hello @ll,

can someone tell me, if this combination fits?

The Tamrac Velocity 9x is large enough, but no alternative for me.

THX for your advice...

I use it.

I carry the 70-200, 24-70, and MB-D10 attached to the D700. Tight fit, but that's how I do it.

It does fit, but again, quite tight. Bit heavy too.

If you just carry the 70-200 (note: hood reversed), no problem at all. That's my favourite combination, and with just one lens, I find the bag quite confortable.

Now I'm triying to find the T-216, which is bigger, and surely would be better for carring more stuff, or at least, less tightly. It's a new bag from kata.

What I don't like about the tamrac, is that the main strap goes over the left shoulder. I know I wouldn't get use to that.

You might also want to look at the KATA T-216 -- slightly larger....

One word of warning -- these bags get amazingly good reviews. In fact, they are so amazing I found they aren't accurate. I would say TRY the bag before buying. It's difficult unless you actually heave a dealer nearby that sells them. make sure if you purchase they have a return policy.

I don't get these bags -- I got one through Amazon based on the amazing reviews they had -- I wanted to carry my D700 with lens attached and two additional lenses. The reviews all said that is possible.

First -- this bag is WAY too big on the exterior for what is on the interior. Sure, it's designed so that it is bullet proof -- but who needs that in day to day use? It looks weird from the moment you get it.

Second -- it's difficult to wear. It comes with an optional strap attached, and no instructions. Unless you remove the optional strap, you can not sling this bag anywhere. (Remove the thin support strap -- if you leave it on, it not only won't sling, but it hangs in your way of opening the bag).

Third -- when you sling the bag around once you've figured it out, it is at the wrong angle to open if you are right handed. The opening mechanism is hard to operate, and it takes two hands to do so. Once opened, the camera lies at the wrong angle to pick up. IT is literally lying facing AWAY from you.

Fourth -- it does NOT fit everything they say it does. The bag fits your camera with lens attached, and one additional item comfortably -- either a lens, or a flash unit. Put in both, and the center section becomes too tight to put in your camera and not have it pull off the lens cover each time you take your camera out.

I found myself returning mine after one day of trying it out -- it was just impossible to use for any practical purposes that I would have, and it would take at least twice as long as my older Tamrac Velocity bag to get open and be ready to shoot. This is not an ad for the Velocity bag -- I don't like that either -- but I'll stick with it for now until I find something better.

I just don't get the amazing reviews for this bag. It seems impractical.

Yep. You're right. T-216 is a bit wider, but the rest is similar.

The difference too, is the external pocket, where a lens can be carried... but, just for security, I would'nt put a lens in there, because, it looks quite essy to open, by anybody, and because of bumping that part of the bag too, with whatever thing, like a sign post, a tree, a door... That pouch doesn't seem as rugged as the rest of the bag.

Hi Marco --

I realize you're going KATA but for those who follow this thread...

FYI. I'm using the Tamrac 8x and D700 fitted with a 70-200/2.8 - tight but without problems. It certainly takes all of the center space as well as half of a side chamber. But there's still room for my 50/1.4 and a bunch of smaller accessories.

Best,

Roy

I reallyl like Kata bags. Last year on a one week trip to Scotland, I took the Fuji S5 and Nikon 18-200 in the torso bag - T212. Now that I have D700 and 70-200 and 24-70 I needed something bigger, yet comfortable and convenient. I opted for the 3N1 bag (model 30). Camera with 70-200 mounted fits across the bag, however, a bit tight (I don't have the extra grip). And, it does have side access so you can use it like the torso bag (swing around front and access camera). Because of the side access, there is one small inconvenience - access to all compartments at same time. (make sense?) For the D700/70-200 combination, I also recommend the BlackRapid Rs4 strap (mounted to the lens foot) - makes carrying this combo much more comfortable.
Bill

...thanks for your replay Bill.

Yes, the RS4 is very very comfortable, I use it too.
Best strap I ever used!

For me the Kata 3N1-30 is a little bit to big. I don't need the extra space on the top. I search a compact bag where D700 with 70-200/2.8 + 12-24/2.8 OR 24-70/2.8 fits. (or perhaps both? :-)

The Lowepro Flipside could be an alternative I think.

The pouch in the top of it can be removed, when there is no need of it, perhabs the mounted 70-200 could fit in the small Flipside 200!?!?

Searching the right bag is a dilemma. :-))

...yes, the Tamrac Velocity with the various sizes seems to be ideally.

On the Tamrac website the 9x should be the right one for the Nikon 70-200/2.8, but nice to hear that the 8x can carry the compination!

When I want to take my 24-70/2.8 or 14-24/2.8 with me, the 9x should it be.
Do you think I can carry both lenses with the fitted 70-200/2.8?

Searching for the right bag IS a dilemma, and I've never been happy with any of my bags -- but for now, the Tamrac Velocity is the best I've found...

I can fit a D700 with 70-200/2.8 attached hood reversed, 24-70/2.8 with hood, and SB900 in a Lowepro Classified 160 AW. If I open the expansion zipper, I can have the MBD10 attached to the D700. In the front pocket there is space for a 1.4 and a 1.7 TC, plus a few other accessories. It is a great bag to carry the above listed equipment. Only issue is that the hoods make things tight sometimes. You can sub the SB900 with an SB800 or SB600 and then it should be perfect. The reality is that all the above stuff is somewhat heavy, due to the equipment, not the bag. I believe this bag was designed specifically to carry the equipment I listed.

..because of weight, I think the Lowepro Flipside or Kata 216 should be better to carry over the day.

But the 160AW is a nice bag, thx!

Marco ... please let us know what you decide on and how you like it. I seem to be in the same 'dilema', and I'm sure my wife wouldn't mind me spending a few dollars on a bag - as opposed to another expensive lens :) Seems to be a cycle .... new lens...new bag ... new lens ... new bag .... or perhaps it is the other way around .... new bag ... have to buy a new lens to fill it! :)
Bill

...my 70-200 should arrive at the end of next week. (I can't await it)

So be patient. :D

Ok, now I tested these bags:

Kata T-214:

video84 said it, D700 wiith 70-200 and 24-70 fits, but tight! When the 70-200 is mounted on the D700, the 14-24 placed in the middel, than it is also possible to take the 24-70 in the bag!

When the 24-70 is mounted and placed in the middel, there is no place to pack the 14-24 in. :|

Lowepro Flipside 300:

A liitle bit larger, but the concept don't convinced me. There is a llittle bit more place in it, but when you take the 70-200 off and the 24-70 on the D700, you have to repack the bag because the 70-200 must place on the side of the bag. Additional lenses like the 14-24 is very difficult to store.

For me, best of all the 3 bags is the Kata T-216:

It is a bit larger than the T-214 but the additional pouch outside the bag fits the 24-70 perfectly. The hood must be placed inside the bag. For me the best concept currently .

Generelly, the D700 with 70-200, 24-70 and 14-24 is a little bit heavy. :D

SORRY this was for the Flipside 200 !!

Currently testing the Flipside 300!

...after a few tests, my decision is done!

I will keep the Flipside 300.
You can easy pack the D700, 70-200, 24-70, 14-24 and the 105 Macro inside!
Take a look: (sorry, image taken with my wifes mobile phone)

Best of all, switching the lens is really comfortable with this bag, swing it in front of you and you have a "table" to do it, very good!

When I want to mount the 24-70 or 14-24, the 70-200 will be placed where the two lenses are.

The Flipside 300 beats the Kata T-216!

I carry an Olympus ep1 with four lenses plus a Gitzo 531 00 with Manfrotto 468 ball head in this bag - perfect

I have just got an D700 with batterygrip MB-D10 and the 70-200VRII
My Flipside 200 is a little small for the camera with the batterygrip on.

Has anyone tried the Flipside 300 with D700 + MB-D10 attached? It is a little deeper than the Flipside 200, but not sure if it's enough?

Other alternatives are welcome, but don't need it much bigger.
I already have the Lowepro Rolling computrekker Plus AW for bringing all my gear
