Will we ever reach a point where they can't add more?

HD video, large chrystal clear LCD, built like a tank, iso 1.000.000!!

will we ever see the day when camera makers stop adding stuff?? What's next? A robot camera which goes and takes pictures for you? And then edits and prints it all without you ever pressing a button?

I am a fan of tech but a camera is and should only be a means to end and this seems to be getting lost in all the stuff that gets added to a camera nowadays, what did we do without HD video or gps or iso 1 bazillion when all we had to do was put some film in a camera and press the shutter?

Soz I am in.a nostalgic mood :)

Technology will always progress. It's just the way things have always been, and always will be. However, as a consumer, you always have a choice not to buy the latest and greatest if what you have satisfies your needs. There are still plenty of people that feel that film cameras is all they will ever need.

For pros, they'll always want/need to have an edge to help their photos/videos stand out from the rest of the pack. For techno-buffs like myself, it's just fun to play around with advanced technologies, with the side benefit of being able to create a few amazing photographs to hang on my walls.

As for techno-trends in cameras, they will have more features, and cost less money in the future, just like computers. FF and MF cameras below $1000 in the foreseeable future. However, I'm more interested in what will happen with lens technology since those are not getting cheaper, and for the most part, aren't improving quite as rapidly as the camera bodies.

We'll see what happens. It'll be a fun ride for sure...

People always have wanted more to get to the ends you're talking about. It was just too expensive. Stanley Kubrick commissioned a f/0.7 lens, and used the cumbersome Panavision 70 to get "HD" quality. People used Large Format film, etc...

Technology is making it easier the Average Joe Photographer to achieve a certain look. It will still be up the photographer to push the medium.

Look at any other area of life: computers, TV,
animation, etc. Companies will come up with new
things we can't live without. That's what makes the
economy work.
Unless you're riding a horse to work, you understand this.

what did we do without [...] iso 1 bazillion when all we had to do was put some film in a camera and press the shutter?
We missed the shot.

I was shooting primarily onto film— usually ISO 1600, typically without flash— until last December, when I purchased my 5D II. Now that I'm routinely shooting at ISO 3200 and 6400, I get many, many more of the shots that I otherwise would have missed.

If you don't want more features, you have two options:
  1. Simply don't use them.
  2. Don't buy a new camera.
The new and updated features aren't actually making the cameras more expensive, so what's the nature of your complaint?

Once the dollar is worhtless and gold is $10,000 an oz.

But then none of us will care at that point.

Agree, especially non photo related options are annoying. Who really need this video in SLR? Tons of video cameras in stores, who cares about them? They are trying to bring up video popularity on same boat with photo? I don't think this is good idea.

Earn less money. Now I rent my 5D II and work making videos thanks to HD option.
Who really need this video in SLR?
Me

BTW.: I didn't purchased my 5D II just because it was a cool gadget with cool features.

If you just want a quality film camera with few bells and whistles go to Ebay and you can buy yourself an EOS 3 for well under $600.

The answer to your question is simple....the manufacturers keep adding more tech to the cameras so that they can.....sell more cameras to those of us who are techno geeks and enjoy the various gizmos.

I've never used the video feature on my 5DMkII. Don't know how, and don't really care. Don't even notice it's there. It's not like there's a big red button that says "VIDEO" to get in my way. So I have a hard time understanding why some people complain about a feature that others will use with enthusiasm to experiment with something new and push their creativity to new levels.

Please, can someone explain to me why a feature that is buried in some menu is so damned offensive? I mean really! It's not like you're required to use it!

You don't have to use it but you have to buy with it, there is no option without. It is effecting cost, updates, pushing talks and questions etc. Now it seems pushing new video war between Canon and Nikon. All this unnecessary and I could leave without video another 44 years. There is Hollywood and National Geographic on TV for videos and I like them but nothing else ...

I want a camera with a sey seductive womans voice to say:
"hey baby, wrap your big strong hands around my handle then push my buttons"
