So I just got a 10-22 and need a hood. Checked Ebay and there are tons of 3rd party hoods for this lens at very cheap prices. Are these any good? Would you recommend them? Thx.

the knock offs that I have purchased were of a lighter material and did not fit as well as the real deal. that said, they certainly are cheaper. the huge "toilet seat" hood for the 10-22 is one of the cheaper canon hoods, also try used. adorama sells a generic at a reasonalble price and you can return it for a real one if you are not happy.

The Canon recommended hood is the same one shipped with my 17-40L. I put mine on the 10-22, not to prevent flare, but to protect it against elbow in crowds.

Most of the time, if the sun can shine on the lens front, then it is probably within its 10mm field of view. That means a proper hood would not block it.
Mine came free, otherwise I would not pay for it.

WYSIWYG - If you don't like what you get, try to see differently.

I bought mine second hand from someone who had a 17-40L and was using that lens on a crop body -requiring the same hood as the 17-55 instead.

Worth getting for protection more than anything as the 10-22 is very very resistant to flare. To this day I am not sure how really effective it is for preventing flare though because all the (rare) shots in which there is a tinge of flare were taken on occasions I didn't have the hood installed!

If you don't want to take a chance on the very cheap hoods, you could go for a Marumi hood. They are better (and dearer) than the very cheap stuff but not as expensive as Canon. I have one for my 60 macro and apart from not having the flock lining of the better Canon hoods, I can't fault it.

I know you're not in the UK but this is what you're looking for:

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?pName=marumi-ew83e-hood-for-1635mm-f28-1740mm-f4-usm

The corresponding Canon item is around £26 in the UK so it's a big saving.

I notice that this particular Marumi hood is not quite the same shape as the Canon - the large 'petals' are partly trimmed straight across in comparison. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing (less shading but easier to carry) but at least you have a choice. This link just to show the shape of the Canon:

One or two people have suggested that the 10-22 is ok without a hood. I'll admit I don't always use mine as it is such a pain to carry, but it is actually quite effective in shading the lens from overhead light. Given the protection factor as well, I would recommend having one.

There is, unfortunately, a need for a hood with the 10-22. There is a fairly narrow angle in relation to the sun where the light can strike the lens but not be in the image area. Under these conditions the lens produces a very prominent, bright red blotch. It is not the semi-interesting parabolic flare that you can get from some older lenses, it's just an ugly blotch. The hood does cover this critical angle, and is worth having for just those situations (unless you are steady enough to hold your hand in the right spot to shade the lens, without being visible, while shooting). But I sure hate how much I had to pay for it and the difficulty of transporting it.

AVOID eBay 3rd party ones - The one i bought from eBay (HK/china) did not fit the lens properly and did not have the black felt on the inside to absorb the light.

Bought another from Amazon (thus ended up spending more money) - but I am very glad that I did - saved my lens a week later when I fell down some steps in Swiss Alps!!!

You might want to try any other hood you have first. I have one of the correct ones for my 10-22 but usually end up using the one off of my 24-105. It works rather well and I have been hard pressed to see it get into any of the pics I've taken.

I've bought cheap (Hong Kong) JJC hoods via e-bay for my 10-22 and for my 17-55. Not to avoid flare but to avoid knocks and inadvertent fingerprints. They both fit well; lock into place and don't rattle. Someone has mentioned black felt lining - neither of mine have that and I'm sufficiently n00b not to have expected it. I've not had any reflective intrusion in using them. I suppose that could be diy fixed.

I do have a 24-105 hood... is this ok to use? My biggest concern actually is protection, not necessarily the flare issue. I would have figured the 24-105 hood would show up at the very wide end of the 10-22 lens, but maybe not. Anyone else have any thoughts on this option? Thx again everyone.
