Is there any talk of Nikon making a replacement for the P6000? Something that will compete with the Canon G11?

How can the G11 compete with a camera that includes a projector? After all, the international demand has been deafening for cameras that include a projector. So the G11 will never compete with Nikon's view of the future.

What are they thinking?

I'd look elsewhere for something in a small camera.

If there is going to be a replacement for the P6000, there could be something announced tomorrow. I visited Nikon Rumours a while back and seem to remember there being an 80% probability, or something like that, although it could be something completely new. It would seem to make good marketing sense after the announcement of the D3s.

I've actually been wondering much the same as to whether or not Nikon will join the competition re: mfg small, compact type cameras that have RAW capability, great IQ, improved low light performance.

There is certainly a market for the G11/S90's, LX3's, G1's etc.

I have a D300 I use for sports primarily and it is superb.

I recently got a G10 and it has become my new favorite for a walk-around camera. Great for casual or serious use. Much easier to haul around than the D300 kit.

There are times for a DSLR and times for a P&S....Nikon has been doing such a great job since the D300/S700/D3's and all that came after those. Their DSLR's are superb for ergonomics, IQ, etc.

Disappointing that so far they really don't have anything to compete with the latest offerings from Canon, Panny, and the like.

Any thoughts? Anyone see anything new on the horizon coming out of the Nikon camp?

The P5100 came out in aug 07, the P6000 in aug 08, so indeed where is the next one !!! with the market evolving very quickly ( Canon G11 ) there should be a response very soon, I hope.

I think I rather have the the Coolpix, thanks.

How many buy the Canon anyway, about as many as you want to believe.

Well of course, we all remember what Nikon "used" to be capable of, and quite frankly, the P6000 was a sleeper of a camera - capable of superb IQ in the right hands.

Here's where the "Hmnnnnnn" comes in. Actually quite a few folks - including myself - purchase Canon digicams. In fact, Canon digicams run rings around what Nikon produce at the moment. This is due to the fact that Canon makes their own and is continuing their R&D efforts towards that end. Nikon, on the other hand does not actually produce their own digicams - but rather farms them out to an OEM maker. Of course, if you like the idea of a small movie projector in your camera, then more power to you - but I suspect that most folks would prefer great IQ first. Perhaps one of the next Nlikon digicams will have a coffee maker attached.....;)
