My photo made front page.....

Congratulations and especially glad you got credited for the photo.
Keep up the good work.

This week, a weekly newspaper used a small photo I'd taken of my
costume character (sort of a self portrait) announcing an upcoming
event. It really is a thrill to be published.

Kind of makes you feel good when someone thinks your shot is worthy of viewing. Personally I did not think it was all that good....I am my own worst critic.

of the local paper. It is not one of my best shots but the editor
was quite impressed with the content of the photo. I am on cloud
nine at the moment! I would post the link but pbase is not working
for me.....the photo is the shot with 4 bolts of lightning.
Hey Shanley, I saw the picture a week ago when you posted it. Impressive shot and good for you for make the front page of your town's paper. -- LC

Nice lightning shot.

Last night, from the DC area, we could see a huge thunderstorm that was over 100 miles to the south, between Richmond and Charlottesville. People were calling radio stations to find out if we were being attacked because the flashes were so bright in the DC area.

Too bad I didn't have my camera with me.

I was wondering how you went about approaching the newspaper with your photo....do you work there or did you just walk in off the street and said hey I have a few photos you might be interested in?

I thought about it in the past but didn't know how to go about it....any info would be great...thanks,
Patty

Whie it is nice to get published I hope they paid you as well. Did you retain your copyright? There are so many people out there trying to make a living at photography it is always a hard pill for me to swallow when people just give images away to see their name on the line underneath it. Don't take this harshly, it was not my intent. I just don't like to see people getting screwed.

Whatever you did, you did it GOOD. ;)

I knew that photo was a 'winner' when I saw it. It is excellent.
I'm so excited for you! Keep it up, mister. I could NEVER be
patient or fast enough to take a shot like that!
It's not a matter of being fast at 16 seconds (laughs). The hard
part is finding a spot AWAY from the lightning but still close
enough to get some detail. I keep my eye on the weather all the
time so I can chase the next storm.

No they didn't, but there is a bigger picture in my mind. I hope this leads to more photos and perhaps assignments like ball games and special events around town that they would like to cover.

Yes I did retain my copyright. I would not give my shots away.

It is a small town circulation. I just called the paper up and said I have some lightning photos, would you be interested in putting them in your paper.......he said I don't know......bring them down and let me see them. 30 minutes later I was in his office with a 3 1/2 inch disc of 4 shots and he picked out that one.

Just ask! What is the worst they can do? Say no?

I had been in before with some photos of a crash and they rejected me that time.

Take a leap you never know they might say yes....and want even more shots!
