Norway, the best place to live

Isn't "the best" of anything always more expensive than the rest? Hotels, steaks, wine, cars, university, etc.... It works that way with everything except digital cameras where the more one spends the lower the IQ. *

"Hasselblad cameras are the best".

"Yeah, but they cost more than Polaroids."

... * IQ may mean Image Quality

Keep in mind people that the index used was 2007 data, prior to the global economic crisis. Hmmmm... I wonder how things would look if 2009 data was used. Would some countries positions change, like Iceland?

No... only in the US. Canadians don't have a problem with the S word.

Maybe some Americans don't really understand why a country should look after it's citizens for the benefit of the society as a whole. I don't know but they really seem to be afraid of that word don't they?
Canada definitely doesn't have a problem with the S word...and I agree, it seems that many American's associate govt-run 'social-programmes' with the old style Soviet Union, etc.

Which of course, couldn't be further from the truth.

Hummanity is a society-based mechnism...we ARE social creatures that rely upon the "collective whole" for our very survivial. True democracy is very much 'socialist' based...because without such a platform - everyone cannot have an equal footing and participation in the system...which is democracy.

The USA - sink or swim approach is not democracy...but a "the strong shall rule" type system that doesn't take into full account that people simply do not have the same abilities, opportunities, capability, etc for a complex variety of psycho-social reasons.

The S word seems to have different meanings on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
There's a perfectly good explanation for that. It goes back to the days of the cold war. In those days, the "ennemy" was the Soviet Union. And of course, this totalitarian regime happened to be communist, which is a form a socialism pushed to an extreme. So, as is always the case in times of war (hot or cold), there were vast propaganda campains in the U.S. to "demonize" those "dirty evil commies".

The younger and most easily influenced generation of this era are today adults with families, and the effects of this brainwashing are still very much felt.

Note that, on the other side of the ocean, the same thing was going on, and today hatred towards those "capitalist pigs" is still very much prevalent among a certain generation in former soviet union countries.

Not true at all. The cold war ended 20 years ago, and it wasn't only between the US and the Soviet Union. It also between many democratic countries that may have had some socialistic policies, like Canada and others. Yet they aren't afraid of the S word. I suspect it has more to do with greed than anything.

New Zealand is not that far away too which is cool too.
I really resent the cold as I get older.
I see that yet again, Norway is ranked the best place to live in the world.

I'm not surprised. Scandinavia has the best social programmes around, plus a great standard of living, etc.

Canada (where I reside) gained top spot for several years back in the 90's...but we've slipped recently...as our politics have become somewhat more right-wing, and as a society we've developed a kind of mean/nasty psycho-social persona. Which is a shame in my opinon.

Here's the complete list.

Many Americans just don't trust the Government and agree with Ronald Reagan who said:

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:
  • If it moves, tax it.
  • If it keeps moving, regulate it.
  • And if it stops moving, subsidize it"
I must admit, Reagan was wrong to call for less regulation, as the events of 2008 proved.

So what are those bailed out banks with their billions of free money
doing to help business in the Obama age??????????????????

I see the list but it does not compute, both Norway and Australia are very socialized countries with a very high tax burden. If one were to use this list as a guide to immigration they could be disappointed.

From Australia, everybody would be distant.
I could only talk to them by tele-phone, that is how distant they would be.
Well, the phone is nice for keeping in touch. Right Marc?
Sure beats email or texting.

Regards.

I suppose it depends whether you see tax as a 'burden' rather than as an appropriate contribution to a well run and fair society.

Right you are.

With the exception of the fact that tele-phone does not always get the timing right, by forcing the other person to answer, you time the person.

OZ land sounds attractive, even though after recent droughts and fires it probabbly isn't that much greener.

I think it's the right-wing attitude that taxes and govt are a burden...and yet, they fail to recognize that "big corp domination" and "the wealthy rule" are in fact a much larger negative on society as a whole.

This 'us versus them' mentality is now a bygone relic in the 21st century.

The bottom-line is that WE humans are a global family...residing on a tiny spinning rock. It's everyone's responsibility to take care of our house. We need decent social systems in place...and it's far better to have a democratically elected government administering the process, than a corporate platform who's number one priority is to make profits for the shareholders.

Personally, I trust my GOVT a lot more to run things like education, healthcare, pensions, etc... than I do BIG Business...and this current global depression (fueled by the corrupt banking sector) just goes to confirm that.
