Norway, the best place to live

I see that yet again, Norway is ranked the best place to live in the world.

I'm not surprised. Scandinavia has the best social programmes around, plus a great standard of living, etc.

Canada (where I reside) gained top spot for several years back in the 90's...but we've slipped recently...as our politics have become somewhat more right-wing, and as a society we've developed a kind of mean/nasty psycho-social persona. Which is a shame in my opinon.

OK - Maybe that is indeed the case here.

Altho, I think it's very important for any site members to have one completely OPEN forum-thread...where people can discuss other issues that are not related to the main website theme.

People with a similar interest...still need the opportunity to inter-relate on other topics as well. Human communication is always key.

Anyways, Norway is still tops - regardless :)

What's wrong with that if the taxes are spent wisely to make the people happy? Is money or good health and happiness the object of living?

You make it sound like collecting money is happiness.

I agree, paying taxes pays for good social programmes...which is crucial for any decent society in order to provide proper support services for all citizens.

For example, I pay $4,200 property taxes every year. Of that amount approx $2,000 goes to the local schools for kids education, etc. I don't have any children myself....but I still have to pay that amount.

That's fine OK with me...coz it's ALL our social reponsibility & duty to provide the next generation with a decent educational platform.

The same applies to health care.

Money for social programmes has to come from somewhere - so taxing the working masses is obviously the best way to collect it.

This is interesting but:

Norway's Human Development Index = 0.971
USA's Human Development Index = 0.956

Not really much difference.

...and I think there are a lot more people trying to move to the US than into Norway (or Canada).

We Americans have a lot of problems and right now they are getting worse, but most of us like our independence and freedom and don't much like socialism. :-)

I don't know what you know about Canada, but we are not socialist and possibly have more freedoms than you do. Marijuana and gay marriage laws come to mind.

I sure hope you don't think that we live in igloos. It is very surprising how little most Americans know about their biggest trading partner.

Norway, is not a socialist country...it's a democratic nation with a free market economy. It simply has great 'social programmes' which of course any civilized society needs.

I lived in the USA for a few years, and I found your society less free than here in Canada and/or when I lived in Europe. America has far more visible public rules & regulations...than in places like the UK, France, Germany, Holland, etc.

That's my observation.

What is getting worse in the US that's taking away your independence and freedom??

All that scare tactics from the likes on Mark Levin that screams about Tyranny taking away your Liberty is bu!!sh!t. Where's the tyranny? And the liberty he's afraid of losing is the liberty of the rich to oppress the working class.

The problems we have in the US are many, but the biggest are economic like loss of jobs not loss of freedoms. You are reading something into my statement that isn't there. I should learn to write more clearly.

I like the gay marriage law, not so sure about the marijuana law.

Canada does have a publicly-funded health care system which brings you one step closer to socialism than the US in that regard.

No... only in the US. Canadians don't have a problem with the S word.

Maybe some Americans don't really understand why a country should look after it's citizens for the benefit of the society as a whole. I don't know but they really seem to be afraid of that word don't they?
