A long time ago, Phil posted a message about C3D (Constellation 3D) with their promising multi-layer storage: a 20-layer FMC ClearCard-ROM in the form factor of a credit card having up to 10GB capacity; a 10-layer FMC ClearCard-WORM (Write Once Read Many) in the form factor of a credit card having up to 1GB capacity; a 10-layer FMD-ROM disk in the standard 120mm (CD & DVD) disk format having up to 140GB capacity? Today I searched for their website but it was gone. After a quick search I found two messageboards: http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?.mm=FN&action=m&board=1603257690&tid=cddd&sid=1603257690&mid=4592

I wonder if the image above already showed the truth - just plain glass?

I don't know about the specific company (C3D) just the storage type.

Multi-layer storage works but is expensive to manufacture. I'm sure they decided that no one would buy at that price. If someone figures out how to make them cheaply we will see them, but no one thinks they can make money selling the technology to consumers (expensive business products are out) yet.

Toshiba should have a 20 GB traditional hard drive in PCMCIA form (laptop slot that is like a stack of credit cards) factor shipping at a reasonable price within a year. DVD, CD and their mini equivalent (sony uses these) are much cheaper to make and can come in RW(rewritable) and Rom(or worm). DVD writer prices are dropping fast for single layer. Dual layer writers are still very expensive.

We should also be seing 8 GB flash cards in xD or other small form factors within the next 3 years.

multi layer optical is promising, but it is a long way from being consumer priced.
