Shades of green..D-Lux 4 (Warning: Frog Photo)

did you enjoy the new Leica X1?
The X1 will not be released until January of 2010 so anything at this point is pure speculation.
can we compare the X1 to the Leica-Pana DL-4 ?
I don't think that would be a fair comparison based on sensor size and even more unfair when you compare the feature set of the DL4 to the X1. The X1 is a fixed focal length with very little more you can say about it at this time.

Until production models appear and we see what it is capable of it's just not very wise to speculate as to what it will be capable of.

The ability to 'see' the shot is more important than the gear used to capture it.

This is unbelieveable when taken by 1 hand, Stablizer setting, what mode did u use or was it turned off??
Nice job with this tiny frog
This was taken hand held in macro mode. I believe it was ISO 200 at 1/100th at f8. All other settings are default. I never use in-camera enhancement settings. Post was done in CS3. To be sure I would have to check the EXIF data... I'm at work and don't have that info available to me here.

Nice work, Jim. The greens are truly amazing in that first shot. Nice composition too.

I'll tell ya though, the frogs in my area never sit this still to pose in hand for a picture! So you just stalk them in the water...
(warning: these were not taken with a Leica, or even a wanna-be Leica)

Or when they're taking their secret flying lessons...

How is it lit? Just available light?

Totally agree about the the live-view, I got a great macro with my MP-E and 5D2 a while ago in a similar position (hanging over a pond), poking inside a leaf. No way I could have got it through the VF.

I'd be really proud of that frog shot too, it's beautiful.

...because if it does to you what it did to me it will cause a sharp intake of air known more commonly as a gasp, which will force the rise and fall of your chest and cause the rifle, errr camera to move. "

:-D

all the best,

Thanks for the information.

Jim,

Nice images, no matter what cam you use :-).
Best compliment you could give me..
Just wondering how you got the border with text around the first image?
All done in Photoshop CS3... Increase canvas size and select a canvas color then use the text tool in CS3 to create the title on its own layer.

Hey Jim

I didn't realise the IQ could be this good even in such skilled hands ;) . Bodes well for the X1.
Ian, thanks.. the DL4 really is a very good and versatile camera. I just wish that Panasonic would let it grow to at least and APSC sensor with the same lens. Yes, the camera would be larger but just imagine the IQ with a larger sensor and larger photosites.

I'm not convinced the GF1 is what I want... and as for the X1 the lack of zoom is a bit bothersome but I could use it as I have used the M8 and the DP1 and 2.

The X1 looks very interesting but I was really hoping for a digital CL. Still waiting to see images from a production version of the X1. That will be the decision maker for me. If the IQ and DR is there and the AF is as good as I have heard it is then I may opt for one.

I have the D2x with a macro lens and I have extension tubes - not that I do much macro these days. I also have a Canon G9 which I don't like much, in fact I've just given it to the mrs to replace her 5 year old olympus 5mp digicam.

I'm looking for a P&S replacement so maybe the D-Lux 4 or X1 will be the one!

cheers

I'm not sure the X1 will be much of a macro machine. The G9 and the DL4 do a pretty good job at macro. I also have a G9 and used it for macro and video until I got the Dl4.. now I only use the G9 for video.

Spectacular photo. Congats. One could never tell it was made on a small sensor camera. One more bit of proof that pixel peepers are fools.
