Sal has been banned

.....it appears that this might be the post that caused Sal to be banned!!!

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1006&message=33209331&changemode=1

If this got him banned, then I am flabbergasted. Incredible. A rather benign comment to say the least. To the individuals concerned, grow up and lose the sensitivity. This was a benign tongue in cheek comment and not personally directed at any member of the forum so why take it personally ????????

Grow up.

Frankly I am surprised that the Moderators could not see the innocence and light heartedness of Sals comment!!!!!.

I hope I am not banned for simply posting the link to the forum. Hopefully this is not a **** camp. I still have faith in the moderators even though they lost it in the case of Sal !!!!. Honestly !!

Mio Dio!

A presto, Sal. Ciao.

but that one could be construed in the wrong way (sexist because the witch is female ?) by the highly sensitive types and could result in another ban. Hopefully the moderators can excercise a bit more discretion this time though

Hi Michael,

Is that who complained about Sal's comments ? If so - I am very surprised. I saw the thread and just took it as Sal's humour. Nothing offensive as far as I could make out.

Each to their own I guess. But I think the Moderators need to take a closer look at their application of 'moderation'. I've seen MUCH worse on these Forums which has had no application of 'moderation'. Let's hope Sal comes back after this. I could see him throwing in the towel altogether - and I enjoy reading his comments.

Blaming Gale for all of this. You sift through threads looking for someone to blame for Sal's ban. Did it ever occur to you that perhaps the post/posts in question have been removed? No... not when you're on your witch hunt, and that is exactly what you've been on here...literally. The post I am referring to was in the "me in the maldive" thread. Doing a crappy job of replacing a head on a totally tasteless image of a man with his hand on the breast of a woman was uncalled for. This place has become, at times, nothing more than a men's locker room. Another case of Sal's "humor" was in the case of the person who asked for critique on the dog park picture. In that case, Sal referred to the lady in the background as "the save the whale object". Who was the lady in the background? Perhaps the original poster's relative or friend? And, if Sal's post was not offensive enough, some of the rest of you followed up making it even worse. And you naively wonder why the forum is 'shrinking'? How many of you would continue to post images with the thought of being ridiculed?
So stop blaming Gale for all of this.

I complained on Sal, not once, but twice. Of all the years I have been in this forum, I've never had the occasion to complain on anyone before... but, if Sal comes back and continues to insult and post degrading images, I'll do it again. No apologies forthcoming from here.

So, hit that complaint button. Ban me. Hate me. But while you've doing that, think about what I've said. Think about why this place does not have the activity it had in the past... and if you can find a spare minute, maybe you owe Gale an apology, eh? Or are you too busy mourning Sal to find the time?

Now, you've all spent one day hating someone who is not to blame. Spend another three or four hating me... it's a real waste of your time. I have better things to do. It's called retouchomg images, that's what we once did here.

Hi Michael,

A Yorkshireman living in North Wales ?? You're a 'nomad' like me then - an Ulsterman living in Scotland !!

We too believe in calling 'a spade - a spade'. However, hiding behind the anomnimity of the Internet and the keyboard makes some people believe they can say what they like to a complete stranger - whilst in reality - if they were speaking in person to each other - then I doubt very much if that would happen. Even if they did have differing viewpoints.

In an attempt to both understand what happened , and to prevent it from happening to me, I took a look at the riles of the site.
I found:
"if you continuously flout our rules you will be banned from posting."

"The forums are not actively moderated, however we do passively moderate (delete messages when rules are broken). "

"Glamour / Sexual content images - Please do not embed such images in your messages, while we understand that such pictures (tastefully shot) are a big part of commercial photography we do have a worldwide audience and wide range of paying advertisers. If you wish to bring a gallery of such images to peoples attention then please just post a link"

From a professional photographer who teaches:"Of course it is very subjective which photos fall into the glamour category and which not. "

What I can conclude is this :

If one continually posts photos generally considered "glamour" shots (which I might regard as simply a pretty woman) and someone complains, the original poster can be banned.

If no one complains, then it could be ok, as then the webmaster here doesn't act.

Likewise, if it is deemed"against the rules", then the postings get deleted.

The best I can tell, none of Sal's offending posts were deleted, so it is hard to tell if he really "broke the rules"

So, what I will do

If I have any picture of a pretty woman, I will post a link to it, and not embed the photo itself.

Sal should probably do the same.

I also find some commentary on the retouching forum distracting, off topic, and sometimes (rarely) offensive. This thread is clearly off topic. There is another forum section for these types of threads (Open Talk). Topics like this turn an otherwise great educational forum section into a less attractive place to seek assistance.

While I may not be easily offended, I welcome the artistic technical contributions of those who may be, and I want their questions and advice to continue as part of this community.

I thought there was a ToS around here, but I can't find it.

Like I said (probably in poor Italian) -- A good answer knows when to listen, and not to answer too quickly. Think about it.

I think I saw the post you are referring to. Sorry people, it was boorish behavior, IMO and OFF TOPIC. That type of behavior is a trait many of us suffer from, but overcoming bad habits is a part of our human challenge.

Someone ! Call 9-1-1. We've got 20 guys bleeding here.

Janet,

You raised some good points. I am not familiar with the flagrant obscene posts you mentioned, so I can't comment on those. However, it seemed pretty obvious who complained about Sal from the previous posts right before he got banned.

The support that has been coming from the "good ol boys club" is because Sal has been a very good contributor to this forum, not only by the retouches that he does, but for the honest opinions and suggestions he gives. And, except for when he critiques mine, he is usually right. :-) Receiving honest critiques is the only way we can hope to become better at retouching.

I think you should consider that this is an international forum and there are cultural differences amongst the participants. My wife was pinched on the butt when we were in Italy, and apparently, that was not a grave sin, whereas, in the U.S. the perp could land in jail. If you will notice, Sal publishes his email address. It would seem more appropriate to send him a note asking him to become Americanized or you will be forced to complain. Going straight to the moderators looks to be just vengeance.

Thanks for you thoughts.
