Just bought today a D100 and got a Nikor 28-85 2,8-4 D lens. (recomended from the salesman)

But it looks for me, the 28-85 2,8-4 D lens is a lttle bit heavy for the D100 Body, isn't it?

Perhaps I shoult change to the new 28-85 3,5-4,5 G lens for having a better balance?

Or would someone recomend the 18-36 lens instead any 28-85 to use as standard lens?

Will order a 512Mb Toshiba hi Speed CompactFlash. Some suggestions from You D100 specialists?

thanks for your meaning!

Hi,

I've added to my new lens collection this week the 24-85 3.5-4.5 G lens of Nikon. I guess you've referred to it. So it's relatively small, quite fast with the AF (they write on the box AF-S, but I don't have an AFS lens so far, so I don't know the speed difference). It's nice and cute. There's a slight distortion (barrel) at the very wide position, but not something disturbing. I like it, even though it's missing the aperture ring, but it's not needed.

And - it's less expensive than the 2.8 D version. Sharpness, from what I can judge from a couple of days of experiments is good.

I discovered today that it can't fit onto a TC-20EII converter, although the converter is intended for AFS lenses, except of this one apparently.

That's what written on the box. Have no reference to compare.

The lens you are referring to (and the one I guess the previous poster meant) is the AFS 24-85 3.5-4.5 G IF ED, and this is an AFS lens. Unlike the AF 24-85 2.8-4 D IF, to which the previous poster was referring.
I discovered today that it can't fit onto a TC-20EII converter,
although the converter is intended for AFS lenses, except of this

Yes, that is true... (I also noticed that when I checked the compatibility list prior to buying my lens).
But it looks for me, the 28-85 2,8-4 D lens is a lttle bit heavy

Wel, I also choose the same AF 24-85 2.8-4 D IF; and although it is indeed relatively heavy, I like the lens. The AFS version is lighter, but differs in the following:
+ AFS
+ ED-element (low dispersion glass)
+ M/A switch (allows fast switching from autofocus to manual)
  • no aperture ring (not needed for D100, or most other recent cameras)
  • 67 mm filter thread (unlike the standard 72 mm in the AF lens)
  • smaller aperture (while it doesn't differ that much, I might come into play when using a polarizer for instance).
  • lesser blades in aperture
I personally don't feel it to be too heavy. Main reason for me to choose it was the aperture and filter thread (and the fact that the AF is fast enough for me). I also noticed that the construction (number of elements and aperture blades) matches the construction of the well known AFS-28-70.

@Jörg,
did you get Information about the difference of image-quality of this lenses?
(ED glass)

(ED glass)
There have been other threads (very recently) comparing these two lenses. I personally thought the AF to be of better optical quality (despite the lack of an ED glass), but I have no solid proof of that (it was just based on what I read/found).

It just would seem strange for Nikon to have a lens (the AF) which has some drawbacks at a higher price (it is quite a difference, €300 if I'm not mistaken). I figured therefore that this lens had better optical qualities.
(but I am no pro, this was just my opinion)

have used for a while this 24-85 2,8-4 D lens on my F100 and it made excelent pictures!

But this does not ensure that's it the better solution for that 1,5 factor on D100!

have to look for some threads regarding this two lenses.
