Epson vs. Canon

Mike, can you give me a few numbers on the new HPs you are talking
about? For example, the 7150 or what?

Thanks.
Troy, it's the Photosmart 7350. There is a review of it on Steve's
Digicams site. If you search my name, I posted the link in a
message last night. The only con I see so far on this printer is
that the paper handling is a little clunky, as some old paper I had
jammed in printing. It may be the paper. So far, the prints are
better than what I received from ofoto, which I will never use
again.

Hi,

I have had the 7150 for around three weeks now, after looking at the canon S820 (for home use I have no need of lightening speed) and useing the epson pro 5000 , HP1220 and HP970 at work for photo output.

The new HP7150 knocks spots of all three, has superb tonal range and the new papers should give archival quality without any post prep.

The canon I found gave great results but the paper was just to prone to surface damage, every little mark could be seen!

Agreed the cartridges seems a little small at 17ml but so fare I have had around 44 A4 full colour prints through and its just looking empty now, it's difficult to judge how many more I will get, but maybe around 5 - 10? maybe more?

Hi!

Well, to start with that I am a convinced Epson user as well, for the reasons you already stated.

I can not quite follow your problems... I use the photo 895 sometimes less than once a week and never had any nozzle problems. Well, I had a photo 700 years ago I didn't use for 18 month's... and the black nozzles were not to rescue... but some weeks of no use never were a problem...

I had the Canon S800, and it was a very nice printer. However, I
recently picked up the Epson 2200, and I must say it blows the
Canon away as far as quality. Yes, it's a little slower, but my
prints are so much better. I would not go back to Canon. My
personal opinion though. Nothing wrong with the Canons...Nothing
at all. I just prefer the Epson.
This is the dilemma indeed, I used epson for 15 years and they
always had the best printing quality, my current little Photo780
does prints that are actually much better than a photo lab. With
the D100 not a single artifact is visible, no droplets, nothing,
just pure perfection.

THe Epson though is terrible to run, I basically changed 4 Epson
during the last 4 years hoping to see some kind of improvment. It
was sad to trash almost new printers that were eating paper all the
time. Now they don't do this anymore but when they went to 2880 dpi
4 picoliters the clogging became endemic. Since I print only during
the weekend, the printer is all clogged every single time. In order
to unclog it I've to run the utility 4/5 times so the ink goes all
down the toilette.

Single tank is a problem too; I understand yours has multiple tank,
but it seems that Epson don't like that and I understand why. Using
an Epson become like a mortgage with money in wasted ink every
single month.

I've such a dilemma, I would like to see the printers just like any
other high tech device, not like gilette. (razors cheap, blades
expensive).

I would like to see a printer that cost what it has to cost but
deliveries consistent good gopies and it is ready to work any time
it. I used HP years ago and it was like that but the printing
quality was inferior to Epson.

p.s. sorry if I started this thread here. I know there is a
specific forum but my problem there is that it is too hard to
separate the kids from the people with experience while here most
of the people invest big bucks on a camera and they like to see
good prints out of their printer... :-)

Gabri,

I had an opportunity to see the new Epson 2200 at CompUSA Sunday in Norfolk VA USA.

I like what I saw especially the ability to the size prints it does.

I love the cutting action of the knife. I think I could almost get into the digital photo processing business with it.

Yet, I am an HP person but I sure like what I saw in the 2200. I am sure others will follow and the price will come tumbling down.

I love the printing quality of Epson I hate them though in terms of
mechanical quality but in particular the nozzles clogging.
It is basically impossible to use occasionally the Epsons that I
got without having to do long heads cleaning ( a big waste of ink
as well).

So I was thinking to move to Canon, I saw nice reviews about the
S900, now the questions:

1) Is it as good as Epson? I bought always Epson although they were
always disfunctional the printing quality was impossible to match.
Did Canon catch up?

2) Is it always ready to print or I’ve to “wash” the heads every
single time (like the Epson)?

3) Can I use the Epson glossy paper (I have quite a lot in
different formats) ?

4) Is the cost/copy higher or lower than Epson ? (I’m talking
exclusively about photo printing, I use a laser for text)

5) Is the material (ink, paper) easy to find just like the Epson?

Thanks to all of you. BTW is someone has the big Epson and doesn’t
have the problems that I had, let me know please.

If you can justify the Epson 2200 slow-ness as ok...
...then go back to a Pentium 2 at 400MHZ for Windows, or
a 603e for Mac, and tell me you are happy.

The Canon S9000 at 4 minutes for a 13X19, with STUNNING quality
is certainally something to consider.

First off, waiting for a pic to print is much different than working on a slow pc....Unless you are a pro and are mass printing.

The Epson isn't THAT much slower than the Canon. I'm not saying Canon is a bad printer...Not at all....I just prefer the 2200's prints to Canon's. It's worth it to me to have a little slower printing time for the little bit better quality and better archival.

Apparently Alfred the problem is weather related and it became huge with the 2880dpi 4 picoliters technology.

I live in California where the air is very dry. I do have friends in north Italy and they don't have a single problem, other guys here in California are upset as I am. If you go on some place like cNet and see the users' opinions you will se a lot of people upset for this problem. The problem is so big in my case that even having the printer there for few hours without printing generates the issue. I exchanged 2 printers they both got the problem I kept the second one since it prints soo good. Previous epson got the problem as well but not as much as 1440 dpi. My daughter has a entry level 3 colors (+black) and she has less problems than me, much less. True though that she never prints photos and this problem is mainly hurting if you print photos.

Interesting...

Though there is a kind of "saealed" position where the printing heads rest when the printer is switched off?

So you possibly need some cabinet with higher humidity to operate the printer in? (-;
