Olympus out of DSLR?

Finding the Olympus dslrs at B & Ms is not easy. You generally won’t find them on the shelves at Target, Walmart. Sears, etc. The Best Buys around here don’t have them on the shelves. There’s one good photography store in the area that carries Olympus dslrs. I think this has to really hurt market share. Many folks go into a store looking for a “good camera” but not looking to spend a ton of money. They can see and hold the Canons, Nikons, and Sonys. And that’s what they’re going to buy. You have to seek out Olympus dslrs.

With the current sensorsize they can never compete with Canon and Nikon. So they have to excell on other things like size and weight. Panasonic already dropped the dslr's. It wouldn't surprise me if Olympus will do the same and focus entirely on m43.

What would be the use for Olympus to bring out a pro body? Most pro's use Canon or Nikon. The amount of pro's that favor Olympus is so small it doesn't cover the r&d.

If I would be Olympus I would focus on the consumer market. Launch E-P1 and GH1 like models and improve this standard.

The m43 has enormous potential towards customers and hobbyists looking for an affordable rangefinder type cam.. And even pro's needing high quality in small formfactor.

I would even dare to say the last days of Leica are counted when m43 has grown up.

And to put my rant in perspective check this Magnum Photographer

actually more people reading the words of your original post to this thread would draw exactly the same conclusion

whether it's deliberate, clumsy or accidental is not relevant to that observation.

personally I don't agree with your conclusion (based on your observation which I would never, of course, query) nor your proposed future approach for poor old Oly.

As for the suggestion re seeking professional help - that's plain insulting.

Be happy...
Nope, I do not have the power to control people's reactions or emotions, I struggle with controlling my own reactions and emotions at times. So if a person feels I am creating these feelings they should seek professional help ;) Thanks anyways... Be happy!

John Lewis in Newcastle upon Tyne GB used to carry a range of Olympus DSLRs in their camera department just a few weeks ago, now I see they have none.

As a fellow Calgarian, do you know of any local camera stores which actually carry olympus stock? While The Camera Store does still allow special order of oly stuff (just got an email saying a new lens I ordered is in! w00t!), I would be much more likely to get a new lens / body if I can actually pick it up and try it.

Hey Wyatt, Go Flames :)

I hear you. I only saw a few items at the camera store yesterday, I bought the last ec20 & 14-54II. S@neal has a good selection but attitude at their 11ave store makes it impossible to go there anymore and vistek has little to offer for oly stuff. Not being a lemming I don't follow the crowds and unless you do in Calgary sometimes it gets difficult to get what you want. Ah well, as long as olympus keeps bringing out great lenses!

You think so?? I think one good GH1 like Olympus and an updated E-P1 is enough for Olympus to catch up. Mind that Olympus has inbody IS. Which is a huge benefit for lens size..

Throw in an EVF, two more lenses and the E-P2 body in black - and I'll gladly agree:-))

They should forget about the middle cameras e330, e510, e620, etc... and put all their top technology into E5, E7, Esuperduper, etc...
Just thinking aloud!
I think Olympus disagrees...

"But I don't think Olympus is trying to lead the professional market. We are, on the other hand, leading by way of technical innovations that many Pro’s and consumers now recognize as very useful; built-in dust reduction, digital specific lenses, etc."

"You're right that this camera (the E-620) is what FT is all about..."

I agree too.....

Why is it on a regular basis, someone starts theorizing about Olympus and dslrs based on whether a shop carries them. Or salespeople's statements. Or their own confused ideas about Olympus as a company and camera marketing in general?

Some people should focus more on the cameras and lenses instead of tired theories. ;-)

Some people operate cameras. Others use them to create images. There is a difference.

Well, I can imagine ppl wonder what Olympus will do. Buying into a system is quite some investment. Olympus should be much more clear on what they can offer on the long term. With Canon and Nikon you know what you are buying into and what you can expect.. This is not true on Olympus. So I can really understand why this comes up everytime..

So far it has been very clear, and the only ones that have recently predicted the end of 4/3 are µicro 4/3 trolls, very small people with nasty ideas.

But one must understand: they are hungry for lenses, and most uncertain they will come from Olympus. So they like to scare us with FUD. Now if they went back quarrelling in their own forum...

Olympus is just as clear as any other company. FourThirds is looking better than ever. The E-30 and the 620 produces wonderful images even at high ISO's. The arguments that noise is awful is very relative. I'm much happier now than with the 510. Olympus seems to be keeping up and improving constantly, including the noise arena. I like the smaller sensor size because I get a much large DOF with a larger aperture - great for sports shots. My Sigma 30 mm 1.4 works very well with the E-30. It didn't do well at all on the 510.

Go somewhere else to complain. It's not helping anyone here.
