G11 circled by MFT and APS-C compacts, flaming arrows, G11 out gunned...

You are a excellent photographer and I can see, by the photo of the prints, a very careful worker. I also use the G10 and have made very large prints with it. I am impressed with the quality of it's lens and the construction of the body. However I also use many film cameras, the GH1 with 7 Zuiko lenes, and the 20D which I love. My point being, even the tiny G10 makes wonderful, impressive, clear prints to large sizes, at low ISO's.

any camera you want apparently, so why complain ?

take a shot of the stack of bills it takes to buy one or the other and the GF1 is almost twice as large.....

sooner ar later Canon and Nikon will do a compact with DX sensors and blow everybody else out of the water, but not until the canibalization of DSLR sales vs the gain in campact sales is a wash by their calculation....

what's the address?
I have better things to do right now that write this, there is a bar down that street that would blow most grown men's minds out of their skulls.

Or just plain silly comparisions.
Let me elaborate on my "strangests comparisions"-

Well, I am not the one intending to compare the G11 to the GF1 but after seeing a bunch of posts basically comparing the two cameras (and Canon's own PR) I could not sit idly by.

However, the two cameras by chance are so similar in size and weight that they do in a way beg to be compared. (That is with the pancake prime on the GF1 and only then.)

The thing that really blows my mind is that the two cameras are nearly the same size and weight and yet the GF1's sensor is 5.6 times as large as the G11 sensor!

As far as price, the G11 is $500 while the GF1 is about $900. On the one hand the Panasonic is almost twice as much. On the other hand, for $400 more you are getting a sensor 5.6 times larger in a body nearly the same size an weight and HD video.

If price is your main concern you can get a Canon SX200 for $350 with a sensor only marginally smaller and it actually has HD video unlike the G11 !!! And, the SX200 is 155 grams lighter than the G11.

Now, if you need a zoom lens, if you must attach a viewfinder, then yes, the GF1 is much larger, not nearly as pocketable. But I will say this, if you truly desire a pocketable camera then what you really want is the S90 or perhaps even the SX200.

From my limited experience not true. Thought there would be way more random beauties on the street. Sorry to say...

I'm not sure if this is directed at me... but just in case it is... For the record, I can not afford any camera I want. I buy the cameras I buy because I must take photographs.

I used my first camera for nearly 10 years until it actually wore out. I have used the original Pentax 67 I purchased for about 12 years and have had it repaired probably about 4 times. I still use the Canon S70 I bought 4 years ago, repaired once.

I bought my 1Ds mark II used for a fraction of the original price. I use it and my 5Dmark II for jobs and I charge a rental fee for using them.

When I buy a GF1 or X1 I intend to use it for personal use and I will not be running out the following year and buying the next new thing.

When I buy a new camera I often sell another one. I do not go to movies. I do not pay for cable TV. I don't make babies and waste money on diapers, baby food, private schools or iPods.

I buy the cameras I need, and lots of hard drives.

Cheers.

actually, i was thinking more in terms of the bootay and "junk in the trunk". it's my understanding that brazilian gals have rather large posteriors and that they'll gladly "give it up".

that club you mentioned reminds me that there's a lot of krauts that visit brazil. i believe there's a lot of prostitutes at that club, too. did you partake w/ a "working girl"?

also, what kind of music do they spin there? if it's that mind-numbing hardstyle trance or hi-nrg eurobeat crap then i'm not interested. i like downtempo music, like much of the stuff played here: http://www.lounge-radio.com/liveradio.htm

The G11 has an 'honest to God' viewfinder. And for me, that makes a BIG difference.

Mayonnaise on white bread, mmmmm!

Now that you've judged the quality of my typing, take a look at my photos. . .

Are you serious??? The viewfinder on the G10 is only a hair away from being completely useless. I hate EVF but I never use the viewfinder on the G10, it's too painfullly bad. I don't imagine the viewfinder on the G11 is any better...

Can you think of a reason, any reason, why someone would buy a G11?
Absolutely-

1. They feel that they require an articulated screen for their style of photography

2. They like a huge DOF in their photographs

3. They do a lot of MACRO

4. Perhaps for underwater with the housing?

and HD video is of no concern to that particular shooter...

I am sure it will be a well made camera.

Firstly, nobody ask you to invest in other lens. This is just an option. If you have problem with the zoom range, please remember people who bought G series has compromised zoom range for years (compare to super zoom).

Secondly, price of a Ixus series is cheaper than a G series. Please go and compare why people buy G series in the beginning. You can just use the same theory on GF1. The difference is just different people has different needs and money. Somebody want better IQ and accept a pancake lens, others may want at least some zoom with worse IQ.

7D is much bigger and heavier than GF1. It doesn't mean anything even if Canon manufacture pancake lens for it. People buy GF1 is to obtain IQ closer to DSLR, while not as big and heavy as DSLR.

GF1 and G11 may serve the same market as very few people will buy and use both at the same time. DSLR and G series can be considered two markets as their size are totally different, many people need a G series for its pocketability. However, GF1 with a pancake lens has a size close to G series. Many people may only purchase one of them, not both of them.
Or just plain silly comparisions.

Lets see, the G11 is $499, even with a waterproof enclsure is still

If the IQ lives up to the claims and previews, it will be a very successful camera

The Panasonic is $899 with one lens. The MFT system, and that is what it is, requires another investment for any array of lenses

It is a nice camers/system and I have given it some thought, but I would rather get a P&S
The Lieca is $1999 with its default lens. This is just a high end toy for many.

I can get a 7D + spare batteries & grip and have a real camera with some serious capability, functionality & IQ

They are serving completelydifferent market segments, NOT eve close.

The OP clearly is in the minority on how he selects his camera, equips & uses them. To disclaim filters & do-dads makes it sound like he has a very limited view of things photographic. Nothing wrong with it other than a bit of myopia that everyone else would see it his way.

dpreview has MFT forum. There is no point to feel strange on things that there is a large group of people just next door who can answer. If there is anybody feeling strange about the popularity of MFT, you can go there and ask.

This is meaningless to hide here and feel strange. Take action then you can get the answer/fact, unless you don't want to know the answer/fact and love feeling strange.

I am fairly certain, that many of the people who are negative towards the concept of a compact camera with a large (4/3, APS, FF) sensor are negative because of the strange feeling their lack of understanding the advantages causes them.

Like the people that say "I don't need to shoot RAW!", it's not because they don't need to shoot RAW, it's because they don't understand what RAW is and why it is so much better. (I shot JPG for 2 years until I finally figured out how it works. I was an idiot I will readily admit.)

In any case, I am certain that Canon will make an APS sensor compact when they feel it behooves them to do so. And their marketing will have us all believing they some sort of innovators even though they are 5 years late to the playing field!

Then again, maybe some people do love feeling strange?
