*** MINI CHALLENGE 167 - Three's The Number ***

Thanks for contributing so many photos to the challenge.

Wind Turbines in the Cold - I really like this photo. Using the wire fence to frame the three wind turbines is a great technique. An interesting feature of the photo is the multitude of diagonal lines (wire fence, turbines, fence posts in the background). And the finishing touch - ice crystals coating the wire fence!

Fashion Show - here are three people, 2 women with identical outfits and one man dressed all in black leather. In addition both women are taller than the man! What a lot of contrasts in this photo!

Geese and Duck - this photo features 3 subjects, again a combination of 2 like subjects and 1 different subject. In this photo, the position of the subjects form a triangle. It is interesting that the duck is flanked by the geese, creating a balanced composition. I like the fact that the all of the birds are facing a different direction and are moving away from the centre of the photo.

Field Hockey - I love the brilliant reds in your photo. Each girl is positioned differently and engaged in the game in different ways.

Beauty Salon - What an interesting interpretation of 3 subjects! Only the customer is shown in full, with the two hairdressers making a partial appearance in the photo. I like this photo.

Three Birches - This is a marvellous photo of an archway formed by three birch trees bent over. Questions come to mind. Why are the trees bent over? Was there a very heavy snowfall that weighed down the branches so much that the trees bent over? Whatever the answer, the photo is totally enjoyable.

Romana - This is an interesting photo of 3 young ladies all dressed identically. Again more questions. What is the vehicle behind them? What is the occasion?

Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

Your seach through your archives resulted in good examples of the compositional rule of odd number of subjects.

Echinacea Flowers - Here we have 2 large Echinacea flowers that have seen their day, and one little flower that just won't quit. I really enjoy all of the colours - pink petals, green background and orange (front flower crowned with sunlight).

Dried Berries - Here we have 3 berries that have seen their day also. Here's what I really like about this photo - the blend of colours. The photo has brilliant red-orange foreground berries, a muted orange background berry and a very soft bokeh.

Ducklings - Nice things come in threes, especially ducklings. It is interesting that each one has a unique colour pattern, including the bill. A bonus in this picture - we have 3 reflections of the ducklings' heads.

Thanks for entering your photos.

This is the only pic I have that meets the criteria. Wish I had time to go take something current but this thing called work keeps getting in the way ;-)

Title: "Three and the odd one out". Taken with my first Sony camera the DSC W1.

Thanks for your comments Danielle.

Hi Meaness,

No it is three separate butterflies (my PP skills are not good enought to create that).

It was taken at the Cincinnati Zoo butterfly garden. The sun was just right and they were all aligned just right. Just lucky,

I do not know, there was not so much snow around. And weather was pretty good as you can see. It looks so unusual thus I stopped and took a several photos - this one is the best and fitted the theme too, but the question will stay unanswered...
Romana - This is an interesting photo of 3 young ladies all dressed identically. Again more questions. What is the vehicle behind them? What is the occasion?
It was a little stopover of several trucks going to the truck show. And the girls were hostess of the radio station that organized contests for kids, etc. But the main reason for the taking a photo was Romana - her smile. Immediately I thought that I see her again as hostess or model. And later she won the regional miss contest. And 3 years later, she was finalist of the whole country miss contest.

Your entries provide a good variety of shots of three subjects.

Wind Surfers - I like the diagonal line formed by the three wind surfers. Only one surfer is highlighted by the sun, bringing our attention to the middle. Motion is everywhere here - the surfers and the waves interrupting the sparkling blue water. One more bonus - the rule of thirds is displayed by the horizonatal white line of waves.

Orchid Lineup - What vivid colours in this photo! I love the fuschia and the green bokeh. The top petal of each flower is darker than the rest of the petals which are glimmering in the sunlight. The lineup of the orchids is interesting too - perspective makes the orchid on the right smaller than the others.

Misty Morning - It is interesting what mist will do to colours. The top left hot-air balloon is the brightest of the three although it does show as a somewhat muted yellow. You can see the colours in the bottom right balloon, although much more muted. Almost no colour in the middle balloon - although there is a hint of colour and stripes. The balloons are positioned in a pleasing horizontal line. I find it ironic that the logo on the yellow balloon is advertising the shapes in the photo.
