Getting pix back INTO camera IMPOSSIBLE?

I recently got a G2 and really love it.

BUT......Apparently once you take your pics off your memory card and then try to put them back on.....The camera can't read them!!!!

Even though the PC will show you the files on the card and even transfer them to other media, once you put the card back into the camera, the camera just says "no files".

At first I thought it must be my card reader/writer or my PC, so I bought another brand reader, and then also tried downloading them from my local camera store computer.....no luck!

So apparently Cannon must have some sort of proprietary jpg file format that they write the files in and then convert them once they're in your

computer. The manual (and the camera store of course) never mention anything about this.

This SUCKS!

When I got home from a recent vacation to China I wanted to print selected shots, and was told to down load all my files into my PC and then just burn the ones I wanted to print onto a CD and take it into my digital camera shop to be printed (I had coupons for 75 FREE prints that I got when I purchased the G2).

.So now I have to show my pictures on a small computer monitor (usually located in a small room in the homes of most of my friends), or show them small prints that we pass around (yeah I know we've really gotten spoiled).

One of the coolest features of this camera is that normally you can use the camera to show your shots on a TV with the benefit of being able to zoom in and see all kinds of things you normally couldn't because of the larger size of the TV monitor

Anyway, If anyone know how to get my shots back onto my memory cards so that the camera will read them, I'd be incredibly greatfull.

Thanks

Scott:

I'm assuming you're referring to pictures that have been altered/renamed/etc. on the computer. I tested images on my S30. Those images that were transferred to my computer, then remained untouched, did appear on my camera LCD after they were transferred back to the camera. However, edited and renamed files did not appear when moved back to the camera.

I have a G2 and have copied pics back to the camera using zoombrowser. All of the photos were edited with PS7 prior to uploading. Everything worked fine for me.

So it's OK to edit (crop, rotate, lighten, etc) as long as you use the Canon file naming convention? Or is it using zoombrowser to upload the files regardless of name thats key? Or both? Which? What if they were not downloaded using ZB. A40, but assuming the same principals apply. Thanks ar

My sympathies, Scott! I fought this problem for 2 months before I finally figured it out! Follow me on this, and you shouldn't have any more problem.

1 - Look at page 18 in your Software Starter Guide which will give you the CF card folder and file structure.

2 - To upload, you must have a DCIM and a xxxCANON folder on your card which have been placed there by the G2! If there is none there, I wipe the card clean with a format, then take just one picture to establish both these folders.

3 - Put the card in the reader and open the xxxCANON folder on your PC. Drag your uploads into this folder.

4 - Finally you must rename any modified files to conform with the Canon system. Thus, Beautiful_Wife.JPG must become IMG_xxxx.JPG in order to be recognized by the G2.

Doing it this way, I've been able to upload everything except big panoramas, which only succeed when I reduce the size to fit the G2 lcd.

Hope this helps. If you still have a problem, send me an email.

As long as you put back the files using zoombrowser, you wiil not experience problems.

I experienced that my G2 can't read files with 'wrong' names or sizes. However, when you upload using ZB, all files are renamed and sizes are adjusted to the specifications of the camera. (For instance: panorama shots will be converted to normals sized images with a black stripe above and under the panorama.)

Unfortunately, uploding using zoom browser is much slower than simply copying to a CF in a card reader.

I once prepared a 'slde show', meant to be run from my camera on a tv. Uploading to the CF card took me ages: About 3 pictures in 5 minutes!

I now keep an image from that CF card on my hard drive, so I can quickly place it back using a card reader whenever I need it again.

This makes me laugh because for many ZoomBrowser is not the software of choice. Of course that would make the function called Upload easy to miss. Time to find that fat connector G2 USB cable and software CD. (lol) eL

Happy to find that my attempt to be helpful was so amusing!

Using a Mac, I don't have Zoombrowser. Perhaps you can confirm that with your G2 directly connected thru Zoombrowser, you can upload 120 full size photos to a 256 CF in less than 10 minutes like I just did using the simple routine described above!

I find it best to avoid the browser software entirely. I use a card reader and Windows Explorer, simply copying all the card contents into a folder on the hard drive. On those rare occasions when I want to download to the card, I reverse the operation. Works fine.

As long as u place the pics back in the same folder u copied them from it should be ok.
And dont rename them or remove the exif data from the pics.

Of course ZB can upload to a card in a card reader too... it doesn't have to be to the cable connected camera.

John,

No, I'm afraid I haven't done anything to the pictures. If I had, I could understand this happening, but I didn't alter them in the PC at all.
Thanks for your response.

THANK YOU DON!
This looks like the Silver Bullett I've been looking for!
I'm going to sign off and try it immediately.

Once again, Thanks!
