Have first 5D and Love it! Want to get 5D mkII or 7D, advice?

I see from your posting history that you just came out of a 4-year posting slumber.

Sounds more like you might be trolling about the 7D then anything else.
that is a ridiculous assumption. why on earth would anyone post after two years just to go trolling? why do you think that someone who doesn't like the 7D is a troll?

he said he has a 1D MkII, right? perhaps he thought the 7D would be a good replacement for that camera but decided he likes the feel, speed, and output of the 1D MkII better. There's much more to photography than mega pixels and features.

And why assume that people are guilty until proven innocent?

I have owned a 1D Mark II for nearly 5 years and have been very happy with it.

I was hoping to replace it with the 7D but the IQ did not meet my expectations, the 1D images are super clean in the shadow areas. Not sure what to do now, I am considering either a 5D Mark II or 1Ds Mark II.

2Pin - Interesting...
Did you compare at 100% pixel level , jpg or raw?

I'd think if you downsize the 7D files to 8MP
like the Mark II the 7D would come out on top?

I was looking at 100%(also 300%) with both RAW and large JPEG mainly at ISO 100/200. There is a visible noise pattern in the shadow areas of the 7D images at these ISO settings its not bad and I guess you may not see it in prints. The granularity of noise pattern appears to be larger than 1 pixel. Looking at the 1D Mark II images at the same ISO the pixels are well defined and do not show this kind of pattern.

Regarding down sampling I guess it will mask this to some extent.

I am being fussy but thats me, 99% of people will love this camera. I know that if I buy something I am not 100% happy with it will mean I replace more quickly so I would rather get something I really love to start with.

This is my last comment on the 7D!

I am in very similar situation (own 5D and like it) and I consider moving to 7D as a very significant upgrade. Some people on this forum are full frame fetishists and they do not want to notice technological progress in crop sensors. I downloaded probably all internet available photos from 7D and I am impressed. They are almost as good as from 5DII and probably on par with 5D but with higher resolution. And then there is a body. There is no single aspect of 5D body or functionality which is better than 7D, just compare specs. Even lovely pop-up flash which I miss so much in 5D (I hate carrying external flash).
So for me it is obvious choice. I am switching to 7D.

This is a bit odd, most people who have view the sample on the net have not seen such issue. Could it be the fact that it's a such a high pixel density combine with the lens choice you used? Have you tried it with any good fast prime lens?
