*** MINI CHALLENGE 167 - Three's The Number ***

This photo of the Puffins was taken on a Zodiac trip to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. The tour operator was Danny Dinn of ECO Tours in Witless Bay. He excels at taking a group of like-minded individuals (like photographers) and going where they want to go and seeing what they want to see for 2+ hours. This was the second experience with him and I'd highly recommend it.

Trafford, Ernest, Danielle, thank you for the comments, Danielle I especially appreciate the thoughtfulness in your responses, not just to my entries but to all the others as well. A perfect host! Cheers! :)

edit: Whoops, I meant Jill , not that furry husband of hers ;)

I really like your photo. What is interesting about your photo is that the three subjects all strike a different pose. If the kittiwakes were all facing the same direction, the photo would not be as effective.

Another compositional brownie point - the framing of the kittwake family within the shelter of the jagged rocks. The varied colours of the rocks surrounding the kittiwakes are very pleasing to the eye.

I noticed that there are two nests so close together. Do these birds nest closely together in a colony?

Thanks for your entry.

I'm glad that you have contributed photos to the mini challenge. These photos are a bit different from the others submitted so far.

Are You Looking at Me? - Definitely this photo fits the criteria. There is no rule that all of the subjects have to be the same.

The seagull on the left is plainly not interested in any interaction with the boy. The seagull in the middle is perhaps hoping for a tasty morsel or two. The boy is obviously enjoying his bird encounter.

In this photo we have a good combination - differing subjects and differing poses of each. The uneven spacing of the subjects provides some dynamics as our eyes move from the extreme ends to the centre and then back to the ends..

Butterflies - Here we have three subjects in a diagonal position. Our eyes start at the bottom and observe a progression of motion. The bottom butterfly is still, the middle butterfly is beginning to take flight, and finally the top butterfly is in total flight.

We also experience a progression of colour as our eyes move from bottom to top. The bottom butterfly is in full sun and the colours are not intense. As we move upwards, the colours intensify.

Thanks for submitting such interesting photos.

Who cannot resist this photo of such cute little baby sea gulls? Never mind that the adult version is not so admired.

I like the natural colours in this photo. The wonderful green background, the grey rock with cracks and gentle counters, and of course the speckled babies.

Thanks so much for sharing your photo.

Your photo is entirely enjoyable. There are many plus factors even before considering our theme of odd number of subjects. Here we have an inviting pastoral scene with areas to explore - the dark trees in the background, the outcrop rocks on the left, the diagonal fence, the farmhouse at the top of the hill, an interesting wooden fence and all of that green, green grass.

Toss in three sheep in motion, running down the path. Put all of these features together and the result is a very interesting and engaging photo.

Thanks for picking this photo for the competition.

Thank you for entering a fun and interesting photo of three subjects.

The different facial expressions just make this photo. Also with everyone leaning towards the center, we have an pleasing pose.

The girl in the middle seems to be thinking "Do I even know these people?" The girl on the right somehow has lost control of her tongue and her eyes are a bit glazed. The woman on the left is just enjoying herself despite her whacky companions.

Somehow, I don't think that the girls would enjoy having this photo printed in their yearbook!

This is certainly an arresting photo. I wasn't aware of your alternate persona as King Henry the Eighth. Poor wives - indeed they all lost their heads.

I have this feeling that two of your wives were identical twins. Only hairstyle provides a way of distinguishing them. The other wife, well she is plainly different. But despite similarity/difference - they all had the same abrupt end.

Thanks for your photo with a very unique interpretation of the challenge theme.

What a variety of shots you have submitted! They certainly meet the theme requirements.

Red Square - the rich red colour just jumped out at me. This photo shows 3 similar objects, but with a slight variation - only one bottle is capped. The placement of the three bottles on the right hand side is very effective.

Ibis Trio - Here you have not only captured three subjects, but also you have applied the rule of thirds. This makes the photo very pleasing to the eyes. One other feature - you have captured the birds in different flight wing strokes.

Food Alert - when this picture arrived on my screen, I just laughed out loud! What a fun picture! The horse on the left looks a bit dazed, just like me at breakfast time. The other two horses look ready and eager to munch! Getting back to photography-speak, I enjoy the rich colours in the photo. Also I like the formation of the three horses in a diagonal line.

Thanks for your entries.

These Kittiwakes were photographed at the Witless Bay bird sanctuary - an island in the North Atlantic near Bay Bulls Newfoundland. It is the same place that Jerry photographed the Puffins. It is hard taking pictures from a moving boat in big waves! Sure makes me appreciate the pros.

Thanks so much for all of your comments about everyone's photos. It is a real learning experience reading your comments but it doesn't seem like "school."

Hi Ben,

Well this 'red' drink I have never tried , so cannot recommend it... Castle is alcholic, whereas this is not. I just happened to spot it one day, when we were out, and took a shot of it. Glad you liked. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much Danielle. I think the first horse was keeping a weary eye on me! :-)
