It's my D700, isn't it

Started getting the blinking fEE on my D700 when attaching the 85/1.4 but not the 14-24, 24-70 or 70-200.

Nikon had me send the 85/1.4 to the Lens Spa in Melville, where it was treated to a level B2 repair service including:
-replacement of the lens signal pin

-verification of aperture, autofocus, and infinity focus operation (although the repair invoice does not state what body was used for verification)
-general check and clean

Got it yesterday and slapped on the D700... and promptly got the blinking fEE.

Occam's Razor says the D700 is the problem, but I'm all ears if you all have any ideas.

Assuming its the D700 I'll send it in after the soccer season is over.

Thanks,

-Alan

Surely someone else in Brookline (or a dealer) owns a recent Nikon. Why don't you put it on a different camera, and see if the issue persists. Good luck!

Also try cleaning the contacts on the lens, if you haven't done it already.

How do you clean them?

I've read about erasers, alcohol on cotton swabs etc...

I'll try this but since it just came back from the Lens Spa where it was cleaned and checked by Nikon, Occam's Razor says it is unlikely to be the lens contacts.

The 85/1.4 works without AF (as expected) on the D40.

It's kind of weird that Nikon found & replaced a lens signal pin but now it the D700 is whacked.

I have a hard time believing it's the D700. But maybe.
Don't you have friend with a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 with an aperture ring you can try?
Go to your local dealer, get a lens with an aperture ring and slap it on there.

Yeah.... nice of them to charge you for a repair that wasn't needed?

My 70-210 does that sometimes, I just give it a twist back and forth near the mount and it stops. I'd be a lot more concerned if it happened on such expensive glass though...good luck.

I've had weird electrical glitches where a certain camera won't like a certain lens or Teleconverter and I've never solved them and just sold the lens/ TC because I can't have a situation where I have to think through what body will go with what lens

I would buy a 2ml tube of De-Oxit (the 100% concentrate stuff) and clean the contacts on your camera and each lens.

Worked for me 2 years ago and I've never needed it since. Definitely worth a shot.
