Competition for the A550?

Why isn't the A700 a competitor for the A550 at its current price? B&H has the
A550 at $950 and the A700 at $850. That seems like a competitor to me and
others here.
THE TOPIC OF THE THREAD, AS REQUESTED BY OP, WAS A550 COMPARED TO OTHER BRANDS, NOT A700, WHICH, AS OP MENTIONED, HAS BEEN DISCUSED ZILLIONS OF TIMES.

What part of that you didn't understand?
Screaming doesn't make you right. It makes you something else.

Re-read the OP. He said he was looking at Nikons but also did not want to change brands . Not wanting to change brands means that he was also considering other Sony cameras. The A700 provides an option if you like it or not. In fact, it meets more of his criteria than the Nikon.

Actually the OP is apparently considering an A700: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1037&message=33184409

The quote: "Compared to the competition the A550 still looks good for me (lol as does the A700 )." - my emphasis
Again the DXOMark ranking is not the be all in ISO performance. It is a data
point but the whole processing chain needs to be considered.
Regardless, A700 is ranked lower than A380 on dxomark site. And even though dpr review updated their review after firmware update for A700, it's performance remains lower than competition in the review.
Not going to argue about DXOmark site. There are plenty of discussions on its value. Lets just say it provides some data but is not the whole story. If you think the A350 has better high-ISO than the A700 then I and just about everyone else here will disagree with you.

Regardless, the generally accepted opinion is that the A700 is better at high-ISO than the A350 which is one of the things the OP is looking for.
Regardless, the OP said they were interested in a replacement camera that had
better AF and high-ISO performance than the A350.
The OP said he read zillions threads about A700 and A550 and wants to see A550 compared to other brands. Apparently that part was too hard for some thickheaded A700 fans, and their plug for A700 anyway.
No he said all he has seen is the A550 compared to the A700 and was wondering if there were any comparisons to other brands. He also said he would rather not change brands. He indicated he was looking for an upgrade from his A350 - specifically in the AF and high-ISO department - the A700 provides better AF, better high-ISO performance and will allow him to stay with the A-mount. Therefore I suggested he consider the A700. He may still go with another brand or the A550 - his money, his call. However I wanted to point out that at $850 the A700 is a great deal that he might want to consider. Not sure how you figure into the equation.

We have already taken up too much space and have provided the OP very little useful info. I am not going to respond to this again.

He asked a question. I gave him what I think is a viable answer (as have others here including the OP).

Your post was totally reasonable Rick, so keep posting your honest opinions and ignore the "Sony Forum Police" that try to squelch anyone who expresses an opinion (whether their own or from a camera review), that disagrees with their own narrow mind set. That's what I do.

says the same poster who comes up with contributions like
I don't know what you are smoking, or maybe you failed math, but in the US you can buy a Nikon D700 body new for $2500. Salesman must love you!
-Phil
when pointed at the fact that he is comparing a 12MP 35mm full frame DSLR to a 24 MP 35mm full frame DSLR. So what squad are you a member of, Phil?
