We all know when you want to take a self-portrait with G2 you just pull out the LCD and swivel it so that you can see yourself. All the informations such as apperture etc disappear and the image is mirrored.

But I just noticed that my G2 doesn't flip the image anymore and all the setting are still printed on the screen, everything turned upside-down. It looks like the LCD doesn't know it's been flipped by 180 degrees. If I try to place it back against the camera body (to have it placed just like a 'normal' camera LCD) then the image at some stage (slightly less than 90 degs) looses the printed informations and the image is mirrored. When completelly 'clicked' against the camera, everything gets back (just as it should). Then again when I try to take a self-portrait I see the image mirrored and it stays like that until the LCD is positioned 90degs against the camera body (is such a position you can see left from you on the LCD). Then, as soon as I move the LCD a little bit more to the left, it flips the image upside-down and shows the in-camera setting (apperture etc), also turned upside-down.

It looks like the camera doesn't understand when the LCD is flipped anymore.

Has anyone experienced such a behaviour?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Davor

It looks like dirty or worn out contacts or microswitches. Get your camera serviced.

Hi Davor,

This is exactly what started happening to my G2 after about 9 months of use. I ignored it at first as I seldom use the self prortrait function but it got worse. After a few weeks the point at which it would display correctly as the LCD was pushed back into the body of the camera for normal viewing got less and less. Eventually it refused to flip at all and the screen blanked out completely when clicked back into the body. That was when I decided to do something about it. It's currently with Canon being repaired. I suspect the problem is with a break in the wire to the microswitch or maybe the switch itself in the bottom half of the hinge. There's a bundle of cables that go from the display down through the hinge and into the main body of the camera at the bottom. This bundle seems to catch against the wire going to the microswitch and I suspect mine broke and was only making intermittent contact. As the display is rotated around these cables rub against each other and unfortunately something has to give at some point :-(

I'm surprised there haven't been more cases reported so far. Hopefully we are just unlucky! Get it off to Canon before the warranty expires.

Hi Davor,

My camera is exactly nine months old (bought on Dec 1st last year).

I'll surelly have it repaired while the warranty is still valid.

Thanks.

Broken micro switch. RMA with Canon.
Thanks, Morris. I just talked with the Canon representative, they will take the camera for repairment, since it's still under warranty.

I don't know what RMA means. Translation?

Cheers
