At the same time with recreation, photography is key tool in technical progress of civilization that captures and documents new discoveries. It helps to propagate knowledge from scientist to regular people through lectures, published articles with photo-illustrations.
Because of inventions people live more prosper lives.

I would really love to hear news that Sony invested into scientific optical instruments like microscopes, telescopes, extreme fast flash systems and various adapters / triggers that would make awesome A-mount DSLRs part of science.

Nikon and Olympus microscopes are used in university labs, they are known by quality. Sony Corporation could have incredible impact on scientific research if stepped into this market purchasing some technology from Minolta or investing into new.

How awesome will be to have Sony’s name attached to tech inventions.

Some photos to illustrate the topic:

N1 - bubbles in the the liquid (beer) does anyone know what is it, CO2 or just an air?
Photo made with Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 macro, Strobe flash and 1 reflector

N2 water drop Backsplash breakes apart

Photo made with Tamron 90mm f/2.8 1:1 macro, Strobe flash, reflectors and CPL filter

N3 Andromeda constellation detail using 50mm f/1.7 lens
Note that human eye can see only fraction of stars that are well visible here.

N4. Long exposure captures light trails by landing airplanes
Sigma 20mm f/1.8

N5 - Stroboscopic flash effect,
with Minolta 17-35mm f/2.8

The difference between Sony and Nikon/Olympus, is that Sony is primarily an electronic company, while Nikon/Olympus are primarily known as optical companies. Sony may make the sensors that go into the optical device, but I doubt they'll make the optics used. Besides odds are that if they did, the name on it would be Zeiss. And, if Sony were an optical company, they wouldn't need Zeiss.

Doesn't Sony have enough on their plate without having to go into some small cul-de-sac of the imaging realm?

Sony doesn't make their own lenses, but sources them from Konica/Minolta, Zeiss, and Tamron.

Science is not equipment, but people creativity. I'm already successfully using Sony A700/900 cameras for scientific work (examples below). About mentioned Nikon and Olimpus attempts in scientific microscopy, I could say that they are behind Leica and Zeiss....

Rat heart slice, miocardial infarction (white) after coronary arteries occlusion captured with A900 and 100mm macro (analysis results published in British Journal of Pharmacology):

Mice aorta with atherosclerosis (red) captured with A700+100mm macro (published in Pharmacology journal):

Glucose metabolism related gene expression evaluated by Western Blot captured by ECL film and after by A700 (published in Life Sciences):

Yes, Nikon and Olympus seem to stay in the microscopy market because they are cheaper, but they do not even attempt to compete in highest quality optics and ergonomics.

I sometimes wonder why Sony does not simply purchases Zeiss, for the knowhow and for the name recognition.

This looks more like the constellation of Orion with the great Orion nebula in about the center of the picture..
the three bright stars are the belt of orion

about the topic:

I don't care if the Sony name is on a microscope or telescope. I have a nice telescope with a shop brand on it. I don't care, it is a good telescope, that's what counts.

I want Sony to make more lenses and equiptment for our camera's so I can go on investing in my sysem when I want.

First off, really like those pics you've posted!
How did you get those stars with a 50mm lens?

Sony is first and foremost an entertainment company.

For those using an Olympus, Nikon, or Leica microscopes on a daily basis.. I just don't see a Sony version anytime soon. Go ahead and bookmark this post and come back in 20 years and this will still be true.

Sony do make none entertainment, professional equiptment for use in studios, but they make medical end security systems to, not realy entertainment...

Here youre right, no Sony on non electronic items like microscopes (or telescopes or.....)
