Home made ring flash adapter for Canon speedlite 430 EX II or any other Canon flash.

A cheap solution for great macro shots.



It works great for shooting close objects , less than half a meter.
Make your own adapter and enjoy a good natural light when shooting macro.

PS. It doesn't work with 70-300 mm where the distance from the lens to the object is bigger than 1m.

I've seen a few home-made ring flash adapters lately. Yours would suit physically and focally longer lenses, rather than those that need the subject close to the lens. Could the horizontal bit be made to telescope?

I post the original shots here, no PP added! I am presenting the light technique not PP techniques. You can see that the skin color is more natural using the adapter, that's all.
No! it doesn't fit long lenses, I've tried it and the light is cloudy and milky.

Here's a shot with 70-300 mm at ISO 100 f5.6 and f length 259 mm in macro-mode:



It does not work ok . Maby my adapter is not well constructed for this lenses, but I am very hapy to use it with the kit lens.

My guess is that the flash is illuminating the front element of the lens in that shot. An inner cylinder would fix that, as would a conventional position not in front of the front element. I'd be interested to see future versions if you make them.

Have you considered a ring flash diffuser? The chinese knock-offs of the Ray Flash diffuser have dropped a lot in price, to in some cases

I do very little people flash photography and when I do I usually need all the reach my flash will give me. I did some informal testing, but don't recall off-hand how much light I lose with the diffuser.

Don't know what they are currently going for, but awhile back it was around $70USD which I consider a no-brainer - something interesting to experiment with. Btw I paid around $130.

Where I've used it most is for close-up photography. I mount it upside down on an external flash, hold it and the flash in my left hand off camera (but sometimes positioning my lens through the opening), and firing it with a wireless trigger.
