I own a Contax 645 medium format camera, and purchased a belt clip battery pack known as P-8D from Contax. It holds 4 D cell batteries. I purchased 4 Ni-MH D cells and now have an 8,000 milliampere battery pack that goes on my belt, and will power the S2 for a VERY, VERY long time! It's worth it. Stuart.

Is the P-8D different from the P-8 ?

Thanks

If this is a belt clip battery pack, what kind of cable does it have and where does it plug into the camera?

The P8 is only a AA battery holder, whereas the P-8D holds 4 D cells. It plugs right into the side of the S2. Pick it up. Stuart

The battery pack comes with a cable and plugs directly into the side of the S2. Nice package.

Wooh. This'll make a good episode on Home Improvement's Tooltime.

GRrrrrrr More power. :-)

Stuart,

What do you mean by 8000mAh? Do you add up four 2000mAh D-cell to equal a total of 8000mAh battery pack?

I notice currently the largest capacity D-type NiMH on the market available to general public is produced by GP whose rating is 9000mAH per each D-cell. Incredible!

I also notice that the brand Saitek produces several expensive charger models which seem to be smart, although I have not bought one yet:

http://store.yahoo.com/saitekusa/batchar.html

So charging is not a problem. 4 D-cells of 9000mAh should provide endless shooting power (I have forgotten my Physics days already, but I suspect that an 2000mAh AA-type battery carries the same capacity as an 2000mAh D-type battery because the 2000mAh means the capacity. So unless you use higher capacity D-type cells to make full use of the larger cell size, I think there is not much gain in using 4 D cells rated at 2000mAh only. But I am not that sure, I may be wrong.)

So 4 x 2000mAh = 1.2 V x 4 x 2000mAh = 9.6 Watt, and
4 x 9000mAh = 1.2 V x 4 x 9000mAh = 43.2 Watt.

But then I wonder whether I shall buy this kind of setup, as one set of 4 AA 2000mAh also provides me with a full day's shooting. If I have to use a lot of external power without CR123A, and do a lot of focusing with heavy lens, and a lot of LCD viewing or file transfer from camera to PC, or writing a lot with large files such as highest resolution TIFF, then this kind of setup using D-cell may be justified. This eliminates need of changing of battery, or buying an extra battery holder, but imposes the problem of accidentally unplugging the external power plug and the extra weight and inconvenience of something on my waist.

Another type of usage I can think of is using similar kind of battery pack for powering a powerful flash/strobe, but such setup is better dealt with using linked up cells rather than loosened individual cells, and the battery types need careful choosing to match the charging pattern, recycling time, etc.

Also I can consider already commercialized setup such as:

http://www.digitalcamerabattery.com/

which can be used in the future for other cameras as well (cross-compatibility and provides different voltages, and option of 30, 60, 90 and 120 Watt).

sounds good
can you provide a picture?
i use the sunpack tr-2000
very nice, and lasts forever
it has two power settings
low for my s2
high for my strobe
but can only use one or the other

Sorry, but you can now buy 2000 mAh NiMH AA cells, so why bother with D cells, which are heavy, the a belt pack is less convenient and the power cord can be a hazard.

Do a serach and see what Fuji thinks of S2 users who reverse
polarity to camera with battery packs...
I have read those threads no need for a search. That was the point of my post.(To caution people )

Note
have read that it might blow fuses on the S2
I can’t figure out how some one could reverse the polarity with a QB1c the cords will only attach to the camera and battery in one way.

Does the Fuji have the power direction reversed in the S2 form the S1? That can’t be they did not change the AC/DC adaptor or if they did it sure looks the same.

K

Why should anyone reverse polarity??? Duh!!!! The tip is positive. That's all one needs to know! End of case.

Listen....it's ridiculous to make a distinction between 2000 mil vs. 1800 mil AA batteries. One can always have several sets of charged batteries so that they may be easily swapped out. The D cells with a 8,000 mil rating is UNREAL!!! Do you need it? Do you really NEED an S2? Decide for yourself. Stuart.

The D cell Ni-MH have a 8,000 mil rating, EACH & EVERY BATTERY! 4 of them gives you 4.8 volts, and more when charged. They work flawlessly hooked up to my S2. I love it. Stuart.

Hy....go to http://www.onlybatteries.com The batteries are about $12 each, but the benefit is immeasurable. You can get a Ray-O-Vac for about $9 in any major drug store. The charger charges Ni-MH, Nicads and rechargeable akalines. Enjoy. Happy New Year. Stuart.

Stuart I’m with you this looks like a great set up. I wish I had known about it a year and a half ago before I bought the QB1

Does the cord lock (like a locking PC cord) into the camera or battery pack?
