Dream Lens

Paul, every WA to tele lens I've ever seen had large to serious compromises, yielding fair images when stopped down in part of the range but essentially mediocre images at the wide end. I think it's not likely that we'll see a pro-grade lens exceeding 24mm at the wide end and reaching to the telephoto. There is already a decent 24-85mm upper-consumer lens (the f/2.8-4), and the chances are better that we'll see a pro-grade lens in this range than in an ultrawide-to-tele. My opinion of course.

Mine would be an 18mm-70mm EDIF Nikkor lens G type would be OK with
a Auto/manual swithch on barrel.

What's yours?

I wish Nikon would make a 400mm lens in addition to the 2.8 which is way out of my price range...I take photos of small birds and I need the extra focal length..

A couple of decades ago (sheesh has it been that long) Nikon was the undisputed king for the majority of 35mm pros (leica not withstanding). What happened? It still ruffles my feathers to hear people say Canon obviously has the best lenses with that "everybody knows that" tone. Seems Nikon fell asleep somewhere along the way.

There are only 3 things I'm vehemently brand-loyal to: Coca-Cola, Fender guitars and Nikon cameras and lenses.

Just sharin'

My dream lens would be a 24-105 f/2.8 AFS ED IF Macro (based mainly on the existing 28-105 Nikkor.) I'd like it to have a focus switch on the lens on the barrel as well. G series - why the hell not? - so long as it's made well.

Thanks for reading.

Oh and I forgot to mention it has to cost less than a pack of gum.

Ok I really know nothing about lens design, however I really would like to see nikon extend their "cheaper" AFS line to include the 18-37, and a new 100-300 f4 AFS G. Time to go back to sleep, my dreem lens awaits me.

I was going to design you one that required mounting on the back
of a truck as a reply to your first post! :-)

Now, all I have to say is: Hope you have some wonderful things to
shoot while you wait!

how about a 5-500 F1.4 AFS VR that weighs > 1 pound

Hey, Digi I agree with you Nikon slept. Yup they did.

But they slept AFTER Canon realized that they had to do something about their products. And I think that the more apt question is:

After leading the pack, why the slack?

Competition did play catch up, Nikon should have seen that!

Competition "may" have copied some products, or better improved them by reversed engineering, Nikon should have seen that!

Japanese are known innovators. They copy, improve products & technologies, embrace it and make it their own..........if that was so, NIKON what happened to you?

I am a Nikon loyalist as far as SLR's are concerned. So much that i'm willing to wait for a come back, in your face technology break-through. I hope in my life time, so I can use my stuff with what ever technology.

My preference isn't so much the wide range, but rather a select bunch of zooms, with an automatic notch or precalibrated incremental zoom capacity for calibration of shots. For example a zoom 70-200mm with "notches" or stops on the barrel so that as one zooms into a frame, a well understood click or integral step is achieved every 10-35mm differential in focal length.

Perhaps even a variance of which element or group is being adjusted depending on light conditions.
