Hi Everyone,

My G1 (for which I have great affection for) died today. I'll contact Canon for an RMA next week, and hope for a quick turn around.

Have you had to send back a G1 or a G2 to Canon? What was wrong?

Thank you in advance to everyone who participates with a reply.
Deb

P.S. Here's my contribution:
  • Bought G1 new and have owned for 17 months
  • Won't power up (battery or AC)
  • Don't know what's wrong yet

Deb, there is an ardent group of G1 / G2 supporters on this forum who would not likely admit if their G2 caught fire. So don't expect a fair sampling from this forum.

My G2 died after five hours use.

Your best bet is to search the archives for " stuck controls " or start researching the following links:

Please keep us informed as there is a group of us who feel Canon should be brought to task for selling faulty cameras. But in your case you've had 17 months use ... a remarkable amount of time without a problem.

Hi Deb, I’m sorry to hear of your problems. Before you send it back, try replacing the button battery. It is a shot in the dark, but it’s about that time. Mine still works fine and I’m hard on it. I’ve taken after 5500 photos and have it for nearly 2 years. I hear Canon dose a nice job, so you should have a like new camera when you get it back.

Hello Mike11,

Thank you for your kind reply and the links and I read them both. Before posting I tried some different searches to find threads articulating G1 or G2 returns, but after some time, I decided creating a new poll would be more beneficial.

It has been my great pleasure to be a part of this informative forum for nearly two years. In general it is my experience that G1 and G2 owners intentions for participation in this forum is to learn and share information much more than to defend their buying decisions. So my confidence in the quality of the people in this forum causes me to put "my money" on the belief that this thread will also result in useful information.

I created this thread with the intention of information sharing and not at all to create a ground swell discontent for Canon. I have been in the high tech manufacturing and quality professions for over 25 years and today work for a company as VP of Operations and Quality. As a result of this experience I know from the perspective of both product engineering and process engineering that the goal is perfection (within project scope), but one that is very seldom attained, if ever. Due to random variations even the best planned and executed developments and productions supported by some of the most talented people will produce defects that get into the marketplace. There are just too many variables.

My impression after reading many, many threads on this forum is that the G1 and G2 are each awesome products with a relatively high level of reliability, in the new and still emerging technology of applying digital to photography. Is it six sigma? Probably not. Is it reasonable for us to expect six sigma at this point in time? Probably not. Should Canon be tasking themselves with reaching six sigma? Absolutely!

I also keep in mind that because we are one of the most active Canon forums in the world that this forum is a natural magnet for discussions for anything that has gone awry with our beloved cameras.

I have posted many times that I "love" my G1. Although it's on the blitz as I write this, I have no ill feelings towards Canon or their commitment to quality. In fact, I am shopping for a Canon D60 now.

I look forward to reading the posting of G1 and G2 owners who has had to return their camera(s), as well as for those owners who have not.

In the spirit of fun and information,
Deb

Hello Morris, my friend,

Great idea! Just to be sure, I'll replace it today. That would be so cool if that is all that it is.
Either way, I've just darn near decided that I'm going to go for the D60.

I've got a little bit more convincing to do with the other half, but I think that within a week I'll get my way. I've been officially told "no way", but you know, you have to work on the "compelling case" such as the importance of visual memories of the children, the need for family photos suitable for framing for the living room and den walls (don't forget the hallways too), how the hobby of photography lengthens our life expectancy (OK not medically proven I know, but it works here), etc.

Frankly, the biggest challenge is finding one of these locally to handle and turn the lens. I've not found one yet. Looks like I'll have to dig a little deeper!

Are you still doing any close up photography?

Well I just replaced the button battery. It didn't make a bit of difference. Yep, it's a dead little camera for sure.

Does anyone know how the Canon RMA process works? Does Canon send a letter or email to let you know what it costs to fix after they have diagnosed?

While they have the camera do they update the firmware, do any cleaning, etc.?

Deb, good luck with the battery and/or the repair. Yes I just posted some macro shots the other day: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=3300917

As for the D60, I’ve been getting a less stern no, but I have a solution: We could swap partners :-} They can say no for ever and we can live for ever using your extended life theory. I expect to see all digital camera prices drop significantly in the next 1 to 2 years. There will be DSLR bodies below $1,000 as well as the expensive ones. A nice collection of lenses and accessories will still cost.

That is a shame.

It works like this, you send in you camera with a note explaining what happened and state on it that this never happens with a D60. Then send a D60 in exchange :-}

Mike, 17 months is a very shot live for consumer electronics. I understand your frustration with the early failure of your camera. If everyone experienced what you have Canon would be out of busyness. You continue to jump and act as everyone is having the experience that you have. Yes there have been a few repeat complaints about the G2, body cracks, zoom control failure, and focus (although this may be a skill problem). Canon has properly addressed every complaint that has been reported hear. The G2 continues to sell well as it has a very good reputation. Dose the camera have issues, yes just like every other one.

Why don’t you get into enjoying your camera now that you have had it fixed? You could spend all the energy you use to complain on photography and enjoy your life!

I like your thinking! Now if Canon would see it that way, yahoo!

My other half has given the green light. Now I just have to find one of these D60s at a reasonable price. That's two tall orders. I'm going to contact Canon on the phone and find out who in my area has inventory.

Hello Deb. I live in the UK and bought my G2 here last October. I recently sent it to Canon UK via my supplier for them to rectify the crack problem and also to repair the fair amount of superficial damage I did to the camera when I ran over it camera with my car! Don't ask!!

After three weeks Canon UK returned my G2 looking like new and charged me nothing for the additional repairs. I was very impressed.

Bought mine from Best Buy, and after about 8 months, had to take it in for a stuck lens. (lens was stuck extended). They fixed it under the 4 year warranty I had purchased.

They mailed it back to me after about 1 week. I assume since it was such a short period of time that it didn't go to Canon. It's been working fine since. Off hand I don't remember the photo count, but it's probably around 4000 or so. I've now had the camera for 11 months.

I am awaiting the return of my precious G1 as I type. When I contacted Canon repair, I was told to send the camera to the Illinois repair facility, no RMA, with a note describling the problem, all the warranty papers if applicable, my name, address and phone number, placed inside with the boxed camera..

I did this - sent it UPS insured and requiring a signature. About a week later I received a letter from Canon Repair stating that they needed a payment of $164. I sent back the credit card information in the supplied envelope. A week or so later I received a call from repair stating that I had waster damage (in the form of rust spots) and wasn't a simple repair after all and they needed an extra $150. Woe is me. How did water enter my camera? I have no idea. I even use small bags of silicone inside the camera bag to guard agaiinst high humidity. They did state that I should have it in my hands by next week. Oh well, definitely poorer - maybe not much wiser.

My original porblem - as I was shooting pictures, I received an error 30 message and camera powered down, retracting the lens. I tried to turn it back on and it started to turn on, extending the lens, then froze. No sign of life at all. Of course the lens stayed in an extended position.

I bought the G1 as soon as it came out here in Japan. Got a stuck pixel after a couplathree months, and the store swapped it (their only quibble being that there's no guarantee that there wouldn't be a stuck pixel on the new one).

I should have sent it back when the upper LCD screen started losing segments just before the warranty expired, but I was about to go on vacation. It's now impossible to tell exactly how many shots the camera guestimates are left, so I really ought to get that repaired but I dread to think how much that'd cost.

No other problems with the camera itself (touch wood), although I've had to reset the date and time a coupla times recently--presumably the battery is going?

Susan,

Thank you for all the info. Did you also send the battery and CF? Just a little concerned about things getting lost so I'd rather not send mine. I will ask Canon of course when I contact them, but just wanted to know what you did.

Neither camera ever needed repair. My back-pack zipper once opened by itself and I dropped my G1 on asphalt. Got a small dent in one corner. That was it! - guess I was lucky.

No! I definitely did not send the battery and CF card. Why give them a cance to lose something? The repair facility will have everything available to check out the camera. I even took off the strap. These items are very expensive and could be lost or damaged. However, I did notice that in the letter that I received, they did inventory the items that had been included with the camera.

Send my black G2 today. i bought it around may/june.

3 problems:
  • one hot pixel
  • cracked body (almost invisible to see)
  • shutter acting strangely sometimes when using MF (gets stuck)
