Kx preview on DPR and IR

yep, no red leds, no go. I was so much expecting this cam to replace my aging k100D, but without those indicators I will not.
And K7 does not come in magenta.

I must jump ship. No really, it IS a pitty, I'd miss it more than the weather sealing.

Yes I'm looking to upgrade from my k100D, but Pentax doesnt have a camera with the right features for me.

I like the small size of K-m and K-x but the lack of visual confirmation points for AF is a dealbreaker. I just dont understand why they removed it. It was in all their entry level models before.

K20D is too big. K7D is too expensive.

12MP is perfect and HD video is a great bonus.

Ho-hum - I will just have to wait for the next release!

The DL does not have the AF confirmation feature, and I still manage for 4+ years. I think we got to try it first before really saying it's a deal breaker, that K-x is years ahead of the the K100D in terms of features and image quality.

As a K100d Super user wanting to upgrade sometime soon I was initially very excited by the specs and features. However, being one who always uses manual focus select I don't think I can live with the loss of focus point selection indication on the K-x. Too bad. Otherwise it looks like a great camera.

12.4mX1.5^2=27.9M is correct one.
12.4m X 1.5 (APS crop factor) = 18.6m, almost exactly the same as the full frame Leica M9 (18.5). This is going to be the resolution of the full frame Pentax digital SLR.

K1D, finally!

Considering Japan has 20 colours, various grip colours etc. to choose from, I don't think weather sealing is doable. If they stayed with only one colour, or three at most with no customization for grip colours as well, then yes, doable. Maybe they will come out with a k-x variant that has weather sealing later.
This is surely a step back from the K200...

Where has gone Pentax's touted strategy of producing smallish cameras for outdoor photographers??

... although it might be worth waiting for the next offering from Pentax. They have been making some interesting cameras recently.

I'll answer both here. There is a lot to like about the K200D, including that it is weather sealed (but none of my lenses are). However, I had made a conscious decision to wait for the next generation camera due to my wanting better AF and higher frame rate, etc. At this point, the K7 is higher on my list than the k-x, even though it's twice the price. For now I'm going to keep shooting with my K100D Super. I'll be over 30,000 shutter actuations soon and it still suits my purposes, therefore no rush.

i think pentax left out the AF on VF for a reason.

Well let's wait for sample pics and more info.
What reason would that be? Thats a backwards step from a DS (which came out 6 years ago!)

I'm interested in knowing who makes the sensor? Is it Samsung or Sony?
if i know i will tell you.

But i just don't think Pentax is dump enough to make a camera that will not sell because of some missing feature.

As a K100D user, still looking forward for something to upgrade, but honestly, i hardly pay attention to the AF Confirm LED in the VF at all, i can see where it focus, the sharpness of the area all in the VF.
Or focus it's in the middle then re-composition it.

Yep a thoroughly sorted K7 with a top quality 12MP sensor would be perfect as a K100D upgrade. Interesting to see a few people with K100D's still waiting for the right cam to come along before upgrading...

Back earlier in the year Pentax/Hoya stated that they will have two new cameras and a minor upgrade released by the end of the year. The K-7 was one of the new cameras. I am guessing the K-x is the minor update. This leaves the K200D replacement as the new camera that will be released at the end of the year.

This will give Pentax a three tier camera system with the lower end still above the entry level cameras of most of the other camera makers. So do I see a EVIL type entry level camera being released by Petnax in 2010?

If indeed the K-x is considered by Pentax "a minor uprgrade" to the K-m and not a replacement for the K200 then:

1/ I am completely OK with it not having weather sealing (if the K-x is supposed to be their entry level DSLR, it's perfectly fine, I just thought it was aimed higher)

2/ I love their conception of "minor upgrades" and will wait for what they'll do to the "K200 level" camera with great interest ;-)

As a pro-selectable-point user, I don't mind the lack of LEDs in the viewfinder because I get to select it. But this will turn off a lot of buyers, even if they don't use full autofocus.

I think he is right, K-7 was a new BODY, K-x has been reported as being a K-m replacement which already has a new style body. I believe they hope to make a lot from this and make a K200D weathersealed replacement. Which means maybe I should wait around..

First of all, I'd like to say I was waiting for this release from Pentax for a long time, I most of the things I hoped/expected this camera to have are there, the only feature i wasn't expecting was precisely the lack of AF confirmation on the VF... But let's put it in perspective, it's a disavantadge but not a real deal breaker for many of the people who are buying these (PS upgraders, vintage lense users, and k-m updaters)... It's not the only baby DSLR who lacks a usefull feature (spot metering on the D1000 for instance)... This brings me to my point. This isn't a K200 update, and Pentax was quite straight forward in tsaying their lineup will feature video, wich means, besides of the obvious body, features and even price and time of release, this is the k-m substitute for the future (k-m as ceased production if I am correct). Those expecting a K200 are already catered for with the K-7 if you think of it (once prices drop at least)... I see the K-X as the first of the next batch of entry level SLR-s, preceding Canon's 1000d replacement next Xmas... If this is true, as I expect it to be, the next SLR-type cameras we should expect to see from pentax are it's medium format camera and maybe a APS-C compact camera. If this last one would be cheaper then the entry level slr Pentax could take the market by storm

i'm so excited!

i was all ready to get k7, which admittedly is an overkill for a beginner like me, in oct. but now, i'm going for kx! it's too early to tell how the 2 differs in terms of performance, but the price, the funky colors (a normal black camera just looks boring after looking at the chart for several mins. black looks pro, but i'm not!), the supposedly better sensor and the cross-processing filter - too good to pass!

sure i lose WR, 100% viewfinder* but i'll get that when i buy the k7 at a reduced price!

i'm so glad that i waited! i will be the only one among all my canikon frens to have a pentax dslr, and a pink one! :)

is it 100% viewfinder a good to have or necessity? i have a friend who moved from P&S to canon 50d and complained that composition is more difficult because what he see is not what he gets.

re the kit lens:

i was comparing the specs of the DA55-300 and DA55-300L. they seem identical to me, except that the L version doesn't have quick shift (i think). does anyone think it's worth it get the original version for approx US$70 more?
