New A500-competitior from Pentax. Amazing spec.

The FPS. Sony claim 5 and Pentax 4.7
The 3 inch LCD. Pentax 2.7, but same res
On the other hand, Pentax has HD video, DOF preview, MLU (are you listening Barry? Don't wait now -- good riddance when that happens), and is cheaper TOO!

Not yet sure how Sony's new jpeg engine and high ISO with new BIONZ chip will perform compared to Pentax.

Does Pentax has (anti-shaked) ?
Sure they do.

Not yet clear if this has new A500 or old A700/D90 sensor

In any case, it beats Sony A500 in everyway, including price.

Can anyone point to one thing that is better in A500?
The Sony has s more than one advantage:
  • Articulated LCD screen
  • Quick AF LV
  • Remote socket
  • Vertical grip
  • AF point display in the viewfinder
  • Eye and grip sensors
  • Li-ion pack instead of AA
  • 5 fps (vs 4.7 fps)
  • 3" LCD (vs 2.7")
I think the Pentax is very likely to be an overall better camera, but the lack of AF point display in the viewfinder is really inexcusable.

Prog.

It's clearly a bit annoying for potential a5xx buyers, as it shows the new alphas weaknesses much too clearly. If you could combine the best of the k-x and a550 and keeping it all under 600g and $1000 then that would be great. Add in a pentaprism and drop LV for another 50-100g and you have the A600.

But it's not an ideal world and the a5xx is what it is.

HDMI output too.

  • Articulated LCD screen
Agree
  • Quick AF LV
Proven better than the K-x ?
  • Remote socket
Agree
  • Vertical grip
Agree, but wouldn't want one for my small-ish DSLR anyway :-)
  • AF point display in the viewfinder
Agree - This is a big one - probably a deal breaker for many!
  • Eye and grip sensors
not important to me
  • Li-ion pack instead of AA
Agree - but might be minor issue.
  • 5 fps (vs 4.7 fps)
This is hardly a difference...
  • 3" LCD (vs 2.7")
With identical resolution I would argue that the smaller LCD is the better one !?

Going Dual-System sounds stupid AND expensive, but it might be what I need...!

Life is for living.

yep. lol:

I'm not sure how useful idea this is, but actually my wife said immediately that she likes them...so maybe it's - after all - clever a good for Pentax ;-D
http://www.camera-pentax.jp/k-x/#/simulator/180801

How fun is that.
I think this is going to be a classic hit there.
And maybe to a lesser extent everywhere else.

Also to address some things. Yes its the same A500 sensor.
No you can not eat it.
And there is no excuse for Sony with the MOVIE MODES!!!!!

All in all, as a Pentaxian I am thrilled because Its fun, gimmicky and tacky..... but Its something that will keep Pentax alive a lot longer and take some market share. Sony are doing really well. I want the same for Pentax. And thats good for everyone.

This model looks ok, price is decent enough.

I see the mention of no AF points lighting in the VF, which is a kinda time warp back over a decade. Still aside from that, it's spec is pretty decent overall.

And yet another DSLR with video, surely Sony will have to start thinking ahead a bit more, they are getting out gunned with even smaller rivals. This new Pentax has 9 cross type sensors, and yet we still have the near decade old 9 point single cross system in the A5xx series.

Sony can no longer afford to be lazy, they have to start working harder, much harder ;-)

the lack of af color point is a bit strange and i hope easily fixable...for me i s a great move from pentax, especially colors differentiation is a big plus.

this morning i mailed some girlfriend and they told me i want one pink...clearly is only for japan market.

C'mon Barry, it's time to plunge. That new pentax got MLU. Sony's crippled.

Hmmm ... I wonder if Pentax comes with something that sits between the K-7 and the K-x. The K-x specs look good, but also looks like an entry-model - a bit cheapish. The specs differences don't leave much room between them expect for better body for a the K-x camera.

This is very nice for the ongoing competition between all the different brand's, Sony will have to lower the price of the new A500/A550 IMO, don't you think???

yes

i see a lot of competition there, and sony don't have a unique advantage over pentax like they do over canikon thanks to in body is

I've a soft spot for Pentax. Amber's first dslr was the *ist DL. But in the UK at least, thanks to Jessops not stocking Pentax, they'll have a very small high street presence which could hit sales, no matter how good the specs....

Yes same here in Melbourne Aus.

Pentax does not have a strong presence which makes buying lenses and so forth difficult. Having said that Sony's presence is not much better.

Agreed - this Pentax model will impact not just price of current models but specs and price of future Sony models.
