Dear folks, I'm going upstairs...

OK, I've done it...

Yes, I bought the D300s + 18-200VR II kit today - I simply couldn't resist any longer. :D
You beat me to it! I actually had a dream about the D300s last night, but still, I will wait...
I am keeping my D50 and the 18-200VR (version 1).
So, I'll be popping in here now and then...
Hmm. Two 18-200's. Were you tempted at all to get the 16-85vr instead?

It must have been my dream... :D

I was actually waiting for the D400, but where is it...?

The shop where I bought the D300s kit only offered 250 Euros for my old 18-200VR. I paid 675 Euros for it 3.5 years ago.

Apart from the usual zoom creep, this lens is still in perfect working condition - and only 250 Euros for that...? No way!

Yes, I did consider the 16-85VR for a while, but then dismissed it.

please let's know how the II vs the I. If Nikon can improve the IQ on the II, esp from 100-200mm, this can be a killer all purpose lens.

I wish I was going upstairs with you... No that doesn't sound right! :D

Enjoy the new gear Marco!

why "going upstairs"?
In the "Discussion Forums" list on DPR the "Nikon D300 - D100" forum is the next one down, but it's actually up ... in camera category...
congrats, very happy for you indeed.
Thanks, Kevin, I feel that my D50 may soon die - the bottom blade of that D50 shutter already looks a bit queasy, and with almost 67,500 shutter actuations, this D50 is in fact fairly old.

Congrats, I just got my D300 (no "s") yesterday, after selling my D80. The D90 and D300 should be a good pair, so I'll be upstairs as well, just in a different room.

I hesitated a long time between the D90 and the D300s - the difference in IQ and features between the two is not that big.
I believe that metering and AF is better in the D300s, that's why I bought it...

Congrats!!
Thanks.
Why that lens? Another one?
I was very happy with my old 18-200VR, but its zoom is starting to creep at 18mm now, which is becoming annoying and also dangerous.
The new 18-200VR has at least a zoom lock at 18mm.

I may get a different lens in the future - if needed.
Now, the D300/s is loking terrific from users in the upper forum. Have you seen this one:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1039&message=33020442

But the guy uses a tele prime. I think if you are going to use the AF abilities of the D300s to their potential, you need faster lenses.
Yes, the shots of those flying dragonflies are simply fantastic!
He used a Nikon 300mm prime + 1.7 TC.
Care to look up the price for that setup...? ;)

I agree, even between the D300 and the D90, I see a metering difference. Good luck with the 300s, I bought the D300, because it was on sale after the store I bought it from got their first lot of D300s in. Not to mention its nice to be able to use my old MF primes without having to guess exposure.

As for AF, from my testing, just over the last 24 hours, the AF of the D300 is superior to the D90, no questions asked. I've heard some say the D300s is even better.
