hi all
Had an awesome airshow this past Saturday.

Managed to grab one or two worth keeping I think? Some shots are similar, just showing the tracking ability of the ole D50 in low light is all.

C&C jolly welcome. Jolly banter welcome too.
  1. 1 - Semi Silhouette of a retired Mirage Fighter jet.

D50,Sigma 100-300mm f/4@300mm,1/640s,f/5.6

I was shooting next to a guy with a D2Xs and someone else with a Canon something. The Canon guy was shooting at I guess 6-8 fps at one point with the props flying by, and there I was thinking to myself, what good is 8fps at 1/2000s when motion needs to be shown for the props? I wanted to tell him, but hey, if machine gunning and zero artistry is your thing, enjoy ;). The D2Xs chap with a 70-300mm VR gave up shooting the sunset shots eventually. I never asked him why, but from his shutter sound I gather he was down to about 1/15s or so already.

Was a fun day indeed, will post more airshow pics as I get along PPing them (that is if anyone would like to see some more) ...

regards

That last shot is a keeper, very nice and atmospheric.

What props? those are jetplanes..

you may have missed;
1. At one point (IOW, a point in time, not specifically THIS point in time)

2. with the props flying by (a direct pointer to the fact that indeed, prop planes were actually flying by)

You got very good pictures. The last one I like with that sunset going in the back.

Kevin,

What do you think you were doing differently that allowed you to continue shooting well after the fellow with the D2Xs had to quit?

I am trying to use the less automatic modes more often and am interested to learn what you did to continue to shoot as the conditions became more difficult.

Thanks,
Shawn

....

.... Cool shots and story, D50's always pick up such nice reds, yellow and orange images.

Like you I am still shooting a D50 and love it..................;-)

I,m not Kevin but I know one reason. The Sigma 100-300 lens is at F1:4 while cheaper lenses are at f1:5.6 at their longer end, which means that the sensor has more light to make use of. My dream lens is the Nikon 200-400 but it is many many more dollars than I can afford.

So much for fancy-schmancy auto-focus systems such as Multi-CAM 2000, 3500, et al. As these shots show, give a good photographer one center cross-hatch sensor, some nice glass, then stand back boys and girls and watch him do his stuff!

Wonderful shots and thanks for posting examples of capabilities of the outdated and antiquated [sarcasm :D] Multi-CAM 900!

Love the delta wing Mirage!

OK, not so purely a hobby.

Ah Kevin,

The beautiful British Aerospace Hawk , built just down the road to me at Brough , and used by the world famous Red Arrows .

Lovely set of aircraft pics .
