OK... how would you spend $7000?

Where talking a full frame body similar in size to the E-4X0 with a similar price to Nikons's D3x that (sans AA filter) probably out resolves the Nikon. What's not to like? Then I'd be after second hand M lenses (not necessarily made by Leica) on Ebay.

Suppose someone gave you $7000, on the condition you had to spend it all on photo gear...

You have got to stop taking everything so seriously Martin.

Had about that much this spring... spent most of it on a new furnace :(
But if I had it to spend on photography, I might get:
refurb E-30
9-18
extra memory
netbook to upload pix to online storage (and account to load them to)
A nice pack
spend the rest touring Europe
(taking my 12-60, 70-300 and monopod as well)

Not having the travel option, I might pick up a 50-200, EC-14, and sit on the rest till the next great body comes out

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I don't think they wanted me to say anything. It was just their way of having a bit of fun, the swines. Strange thing is they make such bloody good cameras.

...but I can't afford to be. Send me the seven grand, then we'll see.

I would have a hard time spending $7000 on camera equipment. Most of the stuff that could eat up the money quickly would be bigger than I would ever want to carry or use.

I'd probably buy a 9-18mm and 50mm and 35mm and then I'd probably buy my wife and 3 kids their choice of an E620 or an EP1. And let them pick a couple of lenses and a flash for it.

But I'd probably still have quite a bit of money left over. lol

been pondering this question for a while, and much more so after the press conference / announcement.

before the actual release, I was skeptical that I would actually think of getting it, but reading a lot on the M9, Leica, Leicaphiles, Leicaphobes, etc I came to want the M9. would be nice to use the wide angle M-mounts at their native crop after all, and the size of the camera is great. however, the M9 isn't the usual Leica product that'll keep it's value as well, being a digital product after all. the M8 is already going for half (or less) of its MSRP and I'll probably see used M9's for a more reasonable (relative Leica terms) figure if I wait a year or two. guess I'll have to stick with those modern SLR thingamajigs for wide angle shots. what pain. ;)

so I guess the R-D1s will see continued use whenever I want the rangefinder feel, and I'll be stuck with the measly 6MP it only offers. the pictures will only be 1/3 as great as those from the 18MP M9, but oh well. ;)

so $7000? the next flagship E-x, the pro model m4/3 camera that's coming up from Olympus (if I like it), EC-14, 7-14 (used), and 35-100 (used). that should be about $7000 I think.

I would get a pair of Canon EOS 7Ds a 70-200 2.8 and whatever other stuff I could afford with the rest of the money... it would allow me to use the money I will use on a 7D and 70-200 along with some other stuff for something else...

Sony a900 - $2999
24-70 2.8 ZA - $1899
85mm 1.4 ZA - 1549.00

leaves me with over $500, my E-3 and lenses performs superbly, so i would hold onto that $500, and in the few months coming i would add a grand or two for the new olympus flagship.

However this is not speculation, a second system is very likely for me, where the E-3 will perform for the web to magazine / small pster work, and the s FF system will work for the larger formats, and clients whose work is more demanding.

E-3, E-300, 50mm f2, 35mm f3.5, Sigma 105mm f2.8, 12-60, 14-45

I have all I can use now. Instead I would put a blower and good tune on my 09 Mustang GT. Then use what is left to buy fuel.

I would wait for the E-3 replacement to come out, then spend the money on transpertation to get to the camera store.....in the carribean !!!!
7 day eastern carribean cruise.

I guess I would expand my E520 kit a bit by getting an E30 body, 50 f2 macro, 14-54 and 50-200 zooms. That would be what, about $2500 of the $7000?

Then I'd invest in a couple of nice solid, yet versatile tripods, one for studio and one for travel.

A modest set of monolights with all the trimmings, as well as some hotlights that can use the same reflectors, softboxes etc. (Some of which I can make myself, including back drop stands).

Olympus flashes for field use.

Upgrade my monitor and get a true photo quality printer.

Based on my existing wish list, I can still come in under $7000 for all this.

But what do I know? I just like making images more than collecting cool gear...

(I wonder how many people really consider that their photography can be improved more through getting and learning to use equipment other than cameras and lenses?)

Tell me what the lightest combination combination that will give me a good birding camera and the ability to do my other passions of insects, trains and planes and produce high quality images and that's how i would spend it. The key word is lightest, quality is of no use to me unless I am happy to walk 10 miles with it slung around my neck. I suspect I couldn't spend the $7000 as a result.

Incidentally just in case the lottery comes up, does anybody know the answer
