Poster of DSC-717

2. Usually when a company is moving up to the next level in
sensitivity, it also means that they are more or less happier with
the way they deal with noise. Now, that doesn't mean NECESSARILY
that the camera is indeed less noisy. But the designers feel
happier about something they've accomplished in this area.
That's my feeling too - if they use the same sensor, they must have some new noise reduction algorithms. This probably means that long exposure shots are going to be cleaner too.

well, there MIGHT be a chance that F717 has histogram, but we need someone who's good at translate chinese to english.

With my limited knowledge, the words below "USB 2.0 high speed transfer (128 MB in 90 seconds)" mentions something about exposure display.

I just couldn't translate the 1st 3 characters in that line which is very important in this case. I don't know if it's the traditional information display or a histogram. Same line after the dash, it also mentioned "document folder selection", dont know what it does. I'm just translate character by character.

--kd
Hmmm, does any of that translate to "histogram"?

Are you sure it's not multi-point metering instead of multi-point focus? That would be much better IMO.
I had a feeling you'd like this multi-point focus feature. We've
been waiting for TWO YEARS (at least) for this one).

If true, and it is really user-controllable, unlike that of a
camera like the P71, then folks stand to gain a lot here. Although
if it doesn't work, it could mean that things will still be out of
focus, only in different areas of the screen. hahahahahah..
This new autofocus must be purely a software feature, there's no
additional mechanics or electronics involved, right?

It appears to be one of the Chinese translated versions of histogram. The actual meaning is "matrix diagram exposure display" to which I take it really means histogram.

The most commonly used Chinese translated version of histogram is "step diagram".

Is there anyone here that can translate the entire poster?

Unless my Chinese is rusty but I think I've read "histogram" in that poster!!!

Literally it says "rectangle bar chart for exposure display" - what can that be if it's not histogram?!

Dang I want a 717!

The chinese poster is saying:
will be introduced to market in Sep.
USB 2.0
ISO 800 1/2000sec shutter
Long time MPEG HQX
1.4 sec startup time
6 selectable AF points.
added Simplified Chinese menu

The photo looks to be real, but of course the poster can be easily
faked.
Personally I believe it to be true.
All the updates seems logical and 707 is old enough to need such an
update.

good job, curtner.

That's what i noticed too....was gonna make fun of sony to include simplified chinese in the menu but have the poster written in traditional chinese.

Anyway. Wonder what folder selection feature and brightness NR are for.

Likely it's only software, as it would involve recognition points. Selection of which areas of contrast that the camera would pay "more attention to" than others.
This new autofocus must be purely a software feature, there's no
additional mechanics or electronics involved, right?

I don't read Chinese. :-)

I'm just going off of what the other fellow said.

HOWEVER... Sony has been hinting at this for several cameras now, starting with the P71. That camera has a type of multi-point focusing, but it's rather "dumb". It's not active, like what is likely to be the case in the F707.

Even the CD400 has a 5-point Multi-focus, as indicated by the Imaging Resource:

They say:

"The CD400 has a total of 5 autofocus areas. The CD400's autofocus system normally selects the most appropriate AF point automatically, based on its internal AF algorithms. If you like though, you can select which of the five AF areas the camera uses manually. You do this by pressing the Focus button under the LCD repeatedly until the little focus bracket icon appears in the LCD's upper righthand corner. Once it does, rotating the Command wheel cycles between the normal central-area autofocus region and the five discrete AF areas. All five areas are clustered fairly closely around the center of the frame, but there's still enough separation to be useful in some situations with off-center subjects. - The screen shot above right shows the position of the AF points within the viewfinder frame, captured with the lens blocked to produce a black background that would show the AF markers more clearly."

So... I would submit that it would only be reasonable to project that the successor to the F707, as the new flagship, will include this nice capability (nice if it works) also. But having a 6-point multi-point focus system... that would be interesting even more.
Are you sure it's not multi-point metering instead of multi-point
focus? That would be much better IMO.

Hi Ulysses,

At your request, here's the translation (almost) of the entire poster.

There are a few characters I had problem with since they are written in "simplied" Chinese while I grew up learning the "traditional" Chinese.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

John

Hi,

The 2 characters literally mean "surround".

But AHA! Now I know what they mean within the context of the whole phrase. The phrase should read:
"Automatic Bracket Exposure"

So this doesn't mean panorama.

Rgds,

John

I'm excited to see specs like this. Waiting for the replacement for the 707 appears it might be worth it.

However, this poster is a bit odd in another area too. How come it does not mention the company, SONY?

You are very welcome.

This is the least I can do in return for all I've learned from people like you in this forum. Thanks to all.
