Snow Leopard and NIK filters

This is what worked for me:

Going on what I've seen around the internet that duplicate Arial fonts could cause the Nik plugins to crash I opened up 'font book' and took care of the dups. That still didn't fix the problem.

Then going on the assumption that the Arial font was still the issue I started looking at the versions of Arial on my computer. All Arial files seemed kind of old. Using an application called Pacifist I looked at the Snow Leopard installer package. Doing a search for Arial I found that the version numbers were different.

Using Pacifist I copied the newer versions of the Arial font to my computer and removed the older versions. There are a few places were fonts live on your Mac. Make sure you find out were your current version of Arial lives, remove and replace with the one from the SL installer.

My Nik plugins now work.

I sent this info off to Nik too. Hopefully this helps you out. Good luck!

(UPDATE: An alternative fix: Your Snow Leopard install may of installed the updated Arial font with out removing the old outdated Arial font. When you use Font Book check within the Arial listing to see if some styles (regular, bold, italic, etc.) are duplicate. Select one of the dups and press "command i" for info. You want to keep the current fonts and styles (version 5.00) and remove the old.)

Nikon didn't do jack sh*t either, unfortunately. And their official response is that Nikon hasn't decided when or IF they will bother to fix their software for Snow Leopard.

Maybe it's the Nik components of CaptureNx2 that are part of the problem.

Here's the deal. Both Nikon and NIK (and any MacOS dev) had access to the release candidates for Snow Leopard FOR MONTHS!

This OS and it's release cycle are not a surprise - they had to know. Most major Mac software devs got with the program and have had fixes in the works for awhile. Most of those that didn't have released fixes over the last couple weeks.

So, don't give me this "Never be an early adopter" stuff. This isn't Apple's fault, it’s the software developers. And big companies like Nikon really have no excuse whatsoever. Zip!

In Leopard, Font book makes it easy to find dupes. The font families with duplicate names have a dot (•) next to their listings. From there, you can resolve the fonts and get rid of duplicates.

In my case, most of my older duplicate fonts are from earlier installs of MS Office. I haven't installed Snow Leopard yet, but will when I can be assured main software is not hosed by this upgrade

I removed all the fonts as suggested, however, I'm still having issues. My Photoshop CS4 doesn't crash, however, all my windows are too large for my screen (and can not be resized) and the buttons have weird labels. I attached this screenshot. Anyone else having these issues?

If you are working inside Photoshop, and you cannot get to the window resize, try hitting hte "F" key once or twice. The resize buttons should come up and the window should fit on the screen. Just a guess.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

Cool, but that doesn't explain the weird button code, right? If you look at all the buttons, they don't have text but code.

The text on your screen capture is so small I can't make out what it say. So I checked my copy of Color Efex and it does not have a problem with weird buttons. But it does seem to have an isssue with window resizing. Haven't figured that out yet. But it's not too bothersome. Just wants to go behind the dock.
