I detest Canon

Now that Ricoh, Leica, and Sigma all pull their SLR-in-a-compact body toys, I feel more and more annoyed by Canon's decision to go safe and put out only....G11 and S90....

Gaaah!

Where's your SLR-sized-sensor-fixed-wide-lens compact, Canon? Where?

You're going to hit a barrier here, Canon, and will depend on Sony to supply you with gimmicky sensors! Ascend the G series to next level and put out an APS-C compact!

just makes no sense. Trashing or praising a camera based on specs before the camera hits the market makes no sense either. You buy what works best for you. Simple.

Don't be such a drama queen. If you like the Ricoh, Leica and Sigma specs, just get one of their products. Simple.

Always searching for that one perfect picture...

I like some of heir specs, especially the APS-C in a compact,

but detest other parts of each. For Leica, I detest the price, for Sigma I detest the reported lags, for Ricoh...eh..what is a "Ricoh" ?

My quest for an upgrade to my G9 had me look at Canon 500D, and Pana GF1 and GH1.

To be frank not having enough info, initially I didn't take the Micro 4/3 too seriously, but the GF1 news made me pay a close attention, mainly because I was hugely disappointed by the G11 news. That led me to pay closer attention to the GH1. The GH1 is superior to the GF1 in almost every way except size. And if you consider the price of the 14-140 alone they cost basically the same and GH1 has so much more to offer.

So, although I got pulled into M4/3 because of GF1 I have a GH1 on order. I've been looking at GH1 HD videos on YouTube and I'm simply blown away. Also with a large sensor and very good lens it's capable of quality stills.

Canon cameras I can just pick up and use. The user interface is tidy. Features are discoverable. The camera doesn't get in my way.

Panasonic... my wife has an FX01, and I can't stand using it. Its menus are ugly, it behaves strangely, I'm always fumbling around trying to figure out how to make it do something.

Granted, much of the above is a matter of preference and familiarity; I'm sure there are people who have the exact opposite opinion as mine. But then Panasonic seems to be allergic to manual controls, which is why I haven't already bought a ZS3 in spite of the above... it beats out Canon's SX200 in every other way...

Color straight out of the Canons I have owned has been pretty close to spot on. I hate pp and getting color right is big to me.

Panasonic has wider lenses, neater autofocus and face recognitions, longer zooms, etc etc.
Well it depends on what's important to you. For me I just want a quality picture - a sharp lens with low noise.

Wider lens? => compromised IQ

Longer zoom => compromised IQ

Smaller camera => compromised IQ

And the latest Canon SD models start at 24mm and 28mm, all with face detection.

I admit I am a loyal Canon user, but is it really that bad? What exactly do you want?

Elsewhere on this very forum, today, is a thread titled something like "fall colors....". The images were taken by a Canon G10. If you think you could do better with a Panasonic, Sony, or whatever, you'll have to prove it to me.

As for the wish list which tries to turn a compact still camera into a half-baked video camera, well.....I want a really good still camera. I want a really good video camera. Those two requirements aren't likely to merge any time soon.

As for any camera with a super-zoom lens, that's not an advantage at all, unless IQ (in the sense of acutance, contrast, and color rendition) aren't very important!

I'm not wedded to Canon, but Canon does a great job. Trying to prove that Canon cameras are "no good" (or similar words) simply because someone else puts more video capability into their still camera, or has more of a super-zoom lens, is just plain silly. Other cameras will always have one feature or another which seems better than Canon - or better than Panasonic, Sony, or another maker. But the best of Canon cameras can compete with them all.

Why make it your favourite brand ? after all, it's your money, spend it on whichever brand can give you the best value. There is no value in loyalty.
... I can only feel sorry for my now favorite brand of digital camera maker.

Absolutely. Even though dedicated lens mounts makes it more difficult to switch brands when it comes to SLRs, there is really nothing that forces us to stay with any one brand when it comes to compacts. I, for example, have a Canon SLR but that does not make any difference in my choice of compact. I pick the one that meets my needs in best possible way, simple as that.

"Brand loyalty" is kind of odd concept anyway. In Facebook, I find it quite funny when people become "fans" of all kinds of corporate entities, like Apple, BMW, Starbucks or whatever. I mean I am happy using my MacBook and 5Dmk2, but that doesn´t make me a fan of Apple or Canon. I am just their customer, and if their future products do not satisfy me or if their rivals come up with superior stuff, I have no problem taking my business elsewhere.

brand loyalty is for fanboys. And Canon has no choice but to follow Pana's amazing achievements in a short time. Superzoom compact, S90 after LX3... lets see how long it takes Canon to come out with a m4/3.. love Canon but had to sell my SD870is to grab ZS3/LX3 (great combo i must say). have the S90 on pre-order. lets see if it even comes close to LX3 and i may just keep it

I think they qualify as partners in making some of the most respected pro cameras in the market!

I only have Canon myself but the new Pana cameras are tempting me away- memories of the firmware crippled 300D, $100 lens hood etc

It's a maker of pieces of equipment, that's all.

...and it wouldn't bother me at all if they took the video capabilities right out of the camera and just made it the best still camera possible in that package, for the same price, or, if they kept the still performance the same, they could cut the price down proportionately.

But I suppose too many would scream about that.
