Challenge 1 - CHAT HERE - Insects/small creatures (macro)

Hi Paul,
Great shot/colours and great idea!

I used to have a couple of these snails (called apple snails?) in my fish tank, but my gurami's used to always bite at them until they got so stressed out that they would die! Looking at the algae on the shell, I guess you have had this critter for a while.

Hi all,
I decided to add this thread so that we can have a place to chat
about entries.
It will also allow us to keep the info about the Challenge on the
1st page of the Forum, otherwise in between entries being posted in
the "Challenge Submit" thread, it is likely to slip back to the 2nd
or 3rd pages of the Forum.

To enter the Challenge or read the rules click this link...

I think it is OK for us to discuss entries before voting... don't
think it creates any problems with the rules. (If it does you'd
better let me know)

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe (little elf helper with this first Challenge) ;-)

Thanks Dave,

I've actually only had it for a few weeks, but I guess the store where I bought it had it a while. The girl I bought it from didn't even know what it was called. I wanted some help keeping my tank clean. The snail is about an inch and a quarter. I have it in a ten gallon tank with my 3 inch turtle, a red-eared slider. Also there are three lucky guppies left over from twelve I bought as feeder fish and a plecostomus (sp?).

Thanks again for the compliment, I posted this before I looked through the thread at all of the others, given the incredible images posted here, mine is almost embarrassing.

Hi Sid,
Great post! How long did the litle guy pose for you? He looks sticky.

I don't know the origin of rule 7, but I think the ragged edge would count as a border.

Hi Tom,

I could find no rule specifying that submitted images need to be from coolpix cameras. I would say, at least for the first challenge, images can be from any camera.

I am embarased to even mention it, but your images is 800x604, and 600 is the limit. Four pixels certainly wouldn't give you an advantage, but if any submission over 800x600 is permitted then where do you draw the line? Michael mentioned the easiest thing to do is to replace the pbase image with the proper size image and the thread here will be update automatically. Sorry to be royal pain in the a$$.

Thanx Mark,

I saw that rule, but forgot all about it when pasting the link from my website. And... no pain at all!!

Hi Sid,
Should be fine.

There are a few rules to learn aren't there! I will have to be extra careful when I enter mine! :-)

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe (co-helper with Challenge 1).

Missed that part about the borders, I've uploaded a un-bordered
version. Hope everyone's OK with that..

Hello Michael,

Is it true that picture for the challenge can be taken from camera other than a COOLPIX? Kinda strange. Is there a final rules that I can read? Sorry, I must be missed that post.

With warm regards,
Bimo.

Hi Bimo,
I think that is something that was missed when the rules were drafted. :-)

I guess a decision will have to be made before the next Challenge.

I would tend to say that maybe in the future it should only be open to Coolpix users. But I don't know what others think about it.

But for this time it will be open to all cameras since it wasn't mentioned in the rules.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Offe.

Hi Bimo,

Just to clarify my post, I wasn't trying to authoritatively say it was okay to use non coolpix cams (more importantly will be okay) to TomCee, just that it didn't appear to be in the most recent draft of the rules. Final drafts are a fairy tale:)

Hi Tom,

I think you intended this to go in the SUBMIT thread. I would suggest using 800x600 though; I think that image looks much sharper than the 640x480. Just my 2c.
Cheers,
Mark

p.s.
Again, sorry to be a stickler
here's my smiling friend again, but now in 640x480!

To Sid:
Thank you for the link.
Gosh! I didn't see that elephant right in front of me. :)

To Michael:
Thank you for your reply.
Maybe we should have a pool on this issue later.

I don’t have time to go out there to hunt new insects with my Coolpix. Though I have pictures taken with other camera recently but maybe I should not submit one.

To you Michael, Dave, Daniel, Mark and others, thank you for your efforts and contributions.

With very warm regards,
Bimo.

Hello everyone,

I also think that the initial intention of the challenge was for the CoolPix cameras (hence should have called it the Nikon CoolPix challenge).

However, I have absolutely no objection if people from the Nikon Digital SLR forum enter the challenge, as I am curious to see the capabilities of those super-heavy-weight cameras! (Unless of course the Nikon Digital SLR forum start their own challenge...)

I think as the other camera forums have their own competition/challenge of some sort, this challenge should be restricted to Nikon digital cameras.

Any thoughts?

Lastly, don't you think the challenge is going well? I didn't expect such a large number of entries! Although it has been a bit of a rocky ride in terms of understanding the rules, I'm sure the next challenge will be much smoother and a bigger success.
