I thought I’ll never ask this…

100IS macro - incredible effective IS unit.

the 24-105 without a doubt but I would add the 17-40 (my newest lens just received yesterday - it does what my 10-22 did with my 40D). w-i-d-e.

full frame body w/ one lens:

24-105L probably but 16-35 would be very, very tempting in NYC you'll miss shots at 24mm.

two lenses:
16-35 & 70-200L
…but – why not: so going to NY in December (yes – with my wife; some Xmas shopping). Witch lens would you recommend on a 5D MK II?

Cheers,
Svenson

Works fine on your camera. Wide angle handy in narrow strets. 70mm fine for hed and shoulders shots.

f2.8 OK for sdhots in restaurants enjoying $678.34 dinners for two.

If this is just a ‘social’ visit, with photography being a secondary goal:

Primary lens: Canon 24-105/4 L IS will be appropriate for most of your shots. It’s a little slow, but the outstanding ISO abilities of the 5D2 will make up for that.

Ultrawide: Sigma 12-24/4.5-5.6 for many of the buildings and ‘canyons’ between the buildings. Yes, you’ll get some pretty strong distortion, but that can be sorta fixed with Photoshop or whatever you use for processing.

Pro ultrawide: If you are REALLY into architectural photos, you may want to consider the Canon 17/4 L Tilt-shift. Personally I’d not use this one unless I was prepared to REALLY annoy my wife, due to the length of time it will take to frame and adjust for each photo.

Telephoto: Canon 70-200/4 L IS. You might get a few shots with this from observation points or along the streets.

Bottom line: I’d take the 24-105 and the 12-24 and try to keep it quick and light to reduce wifely impact.

Maybe KISS is not a good term to use, in connection with Canon... as the meaning in the EOS world has changed ;).

The f/4L zooms were pretty much created with your camera in mind (i.e. prosumer full-frame). Take your pick. Grab an 85mm f/1.8 USM while you're at it. Say hi to the guys at B&H for me :-)

My wife & I crossed the pond to NYC to catch a couple of shows.

So, rather than decide which DSLR body to take, and therefore which lens/lenses to take or not (I've a range that covers 15-500mm), I took a G10. The lens gave me 28-140 equivalent, and I was just fine with that.

Had I been on a Photographic expedition rather than a Theatrical one, then it might have been a different story.

If I'd done the same trip 35 years ago, it would have been a Leica IIIc, a collapsible 5cm F2 Summitar, Weston Master and a pocket full of Tri-X. The Nikon F and lenses would have stayed at home.

My poiint is keep it simple. The 24-105 on your 5D will probably do just fine. If you need to get closer/further away, just zoom with your feet if you can.

It's amazing how years ago people managed quite nicely with a single fixed focal length lens.

If you're really stuck then I'm sure a visit to one if the better NY photographic outlets will easily satisfy your needs.

Well, if your good lady is spending, why shouldn't you?

(And you'll probably need as much free space as possible to carry the purchases)

Enjoy the trip! :D

Whichever lens you prefer to use for shooting big cities.

This answer is, obviously, a bit tongue in cheek. There is no general "best" lens for photographing New York at Christmas. It depends a lot on your own shooting preferences and even issues of how much gear (and how much gear tonnage) you want to carry.

For my purposes, in most cases if I were traveling with only one lens on a full-frame Canon body it would be my 24-105 f/4 L.

I personally would take a 4 17-40 mm.I think 24mm want be wide enough. Going shopping with your wife want give you a lot of time for composing shots. Set it to 17 mm and click away, you can compose it later through cropping! That way you can keep up with her and want get stressed out (lol).

I agree with the majority of posters as regards the 24-105 F4 as the best overall lens however just replaced a good 17-40 with a great 16-35 11 - wow, forget the test results what a lens - even to use with video, simply superb.....
